Just curious whose committed to rattling in a whitetail this season. I'll be in western Montana with my son for up to two weeks. We are completely committed to it and with this much time and the Lords blessings we'll get it done! I have received a lot of pm's from hunters asking about rattling so I'm hoping you all will post up your success/failures for us all to learn from. I'll post updates on how bucks are responding throughout our hunt. Unfortunately the whole family can't make the trip this year so it looks like bacon for breakfast and burgers for dinner every day! :chuckle:
-
I too like in Western Montana and will be trying my best to learn all I can about rattling in some bucks. I am a muley guy, but my wife and I will be trying to get her a whitey with the rattling horns.
-
I will be!
-
I'll be giving it a shot this year for the first time, really looking forward to trying it out.
-
Headed to Vermont next week and I will be doing some rattling.

Where in Montana will you be?

Hmmm.... Interested in what Vermont is like.

I live in Libby and will be hunting Lincoln County. Been scouting my butt off, have lots of mature bucks located. Now I have to figure out how to get them in the cross hairs.
-
I'm all over it. Okanogan East tag. 10 days of ratteling!
-
3nails deer hunting in Vermont is a love hate relationship. Since I grew up there and that was the first hunting I was exposed to that's what I look forward to and love going back every year. The hate is the area I hunt and family owns land on has a very low density of deer. It can make for a very long season. But usually every year there is at least one good buck taken off the ridge where we hunt. Below is an example from last year. But all in all it's a good time. I am flying back and getting an out of state deer and bear tag for less than a Wa out of state deer tag.
-
That's a cool looking rack QUINNB! I hope you get a bigger one this year.
-
We will be giving it a shot here soon in northern Idaho! leaving in 10 days! Can hardly wait! :IBCOOL:
-
Heading for Idaho on Friday for ten days. Definitely going be rattling.
sent from my typewriter
-
If you can get online during your hunts keep us posted how the bucks are responding!
-
Heading to north Idaho Friday as well. Good luck.

Second day of our Montana hunt and we rattled in our first buck of the season. A little 4x3 that my dad couldn't pass on. It was the first rattle of the day and probably 7th so far. 3 does right out the back door of the cabin bedded down alone so I don't believe we've hit peak rut. Usually several bucks show up when that happens.
-
They seem to be very sporadic. As I posted elsewhere I chalked it up to 50 degree temps and the moon. I had the fortune to rattle some bucks I saw first. It was fun watching their different behavior.
-
:chuckle: well so much for my last post. Grabbed a bite to eat, looked out the window and there's a great big buck standing there!
-
That's awesome.
-
It is almost noon. I had my best luck between 1130 and 2 yesterday. I think they dance party all night and are just getting back up.
-
No luck for me this past weekend in 121. I think bone is right in his assessment though.
-
My sons not real impressed that I won't let him shoot it. :chuckle:
-
:)
Come a little closer fella....

hed already been doing some rattling of his own
-
was doing some rattling / grunting trying to help a friend fill his tag today, and i heard some snap pop of sticks close by. thought a buck was coming in. then i saw the orange vest.
-
BBD! The son pulled the legs out from under a great buck this morning. Gonna grab a bite and head back out. Wife saw a buck fight right in front of the cabin while we were gone. As Si would say, "It's on like Donkey Kong!"
-
Nice.
Headed out after whitetails in B.C. tomorrow. And wolves and coyotes and bobcats and cougars.
-
Been trying .. Nothing yet
-
I've rattled about a dozen times this year and have not had anything come in. I tear up the ground, knock rocks branches and nothing. I've tried spotswith good downwind coverage or cliffs. I move every 1-2 hours. Not sure if it's the buck to doe ratio(unit 1) in ID or if I'm doing something wrong....any ideas? I would love to rattle one in!!!! Thanks for starting this thread.
-
Try less movement, (the theatrics). The sound of the antlers will do the job just fine if there is a buck nearby that is willing.
You are triggering an instinct. Buck to doe ration can be a problem though I haven't noticed it in unit one.
-
Interesting day of rattling. Just yesterday I was marveling the fact that I haven't been busted during a session in several years. Well today during I got busted twice during the same sequence. Had on come in down wind of me in the nine bark and the other one the exact opposite way when I stood up. That's just hunting.
The buck my son killed somehow got bigger overnight!

I'll give my 2 cents. When you start rattling stop every 5-8 seconds and slam the back of the main beams on the ground to resemble hoof stomps. Break a few branches also. I'm going to have to humbly disagree with Bone. Nothing more unnatural than just the sound of antlers.
-
Are you guys doing any doe bleats or buck grunting during your sequence??
Am in NW MOntana and trying to figure this out.THANKS :)
-
Hmm... I'm in nw mt also. Where you is?
-
Libby, 11 degrees this am, getting ready to head out the door. :) :)
-
Love the deer around Libby. Have fun. No problem 3nails. I'm sure we all have our different styles. I do the butts on the ground too. My biggest emphasis is watch the moving around.
-
14 degrees in Bonners Ferry this morning. Its gunna be a good day the deer should be moving.
-
I gave rattling my first honest effort this year. I was in 121 and had a few legal/shooter bucks coming into bait. I set up on one that had a buck basically camped out on it 24/7 opening morning. I rattled a deer to about 20' but I wasn't looking in the right direction and all I saw was whitetail runnin!!! The rut was not on like donkey kong and it was actually kinda warm (11/9) however I did rattle one in. It was 0915 so it was probably the third or fourth time I'd rattled. I tried several different set ups over three days with no success.
-
Hunted this morning until noon and managed two sequences. Got busted AGAIN on the second one. Going to try a spot this evening with very few deer but with potential for a hog.
-
I am taking my little whippersnapper out tomorrow, where I saw a ghost of a giant last year. Might be my last day in the woods for awhile. Hopefully we will have some action and I am not too late with the weather switch.
-
Hope you find him!
Nothing this evening.
-
Thank you 3nails for the info and inspiration. Rattled in my first buck today!!!! Came in to 8 yards!!! WOW what a rush, I am hooked!!! 11am took him 6 minutes. Came in a bristled up and stiff legged!!! Had him in the cross hairs from 60 yards all the way in.
Buck are running like crazy in my area!!!
-
Great!!! Pretty intense seeing them come in isn't it? I can't wait to see pics and full story!
Lord willing it is the morning for me to rattle in a shooter.
-
I guess I should have been more specific on "shooter". Rattled in a coyote and did my duty. Lord willing tomorrow I'll rattle in a shooter "buck". :chuckle:
-
Rattled in a small 4 yesterday
-
Well we didn't exactly rattle this guy in, but we did call him in with a few doe bleats. Very cool hunt. I had my son with me who is 8. We picked a likely looking spot and headed up in the timber. Go set up and let the woods calm down. Started with a couple of bleats and waited. After about 45 minutes and some more bleats, we see legs coming through the timber. I point out the deer to him and we both see he is a buck. He keeps coming our way, scanning all around him as he heads toward us. I shoulder the gun and told my son I was going to shoot. Down he went. I stayed there and directed him down through the timber to where he was lying. It was about a 100 yard shot in the timber and when he went down we could not see him. It was so cool to have my little guy there to experience the whole hunt. He has been to Montana twice and now Idaho. I am pretty sure this one has now sealed the deal with him :chuckle:
-
Very cool elkspert!
Rattled two bucks in this morning. Got busted (argh!) by the first one. The second one came charging in, all bristled up and ready to fight. Nice buck about 20" wide but didn't have eye guards and had a busted g-2 (which should have been his g-3). Hopeing for a better one tonight.
-
Ever rattle in the "wrong" species.....

Very cool pic Bone, have you tried rattling while on your picture taking adventures?
-
All the time for whitetails (which is where this pic came from), but not while focusing on muleys.
-
Well this morning I went back into the area that I rattled in the buck without eye guards. Went in with my dad and son, who were already tagged out, and tossed the antlers to my dad and told him to rattle. He looked surprised and took the antlers to set up. Shortly after he started one of them flipped out of his hand and rolled down the mountain. He and my son burst out laughing as my dad took off after it. He continued rattling maybe 5 more seconds and I had to cut it short with a hand jesture because I heard brush breaking. Sure enough here comes the same buck I rattled in before. Not the same outcome for him this time as I let him have it. Couldn't resist shooting him with my son and dad along and the way it went down. I'll post pics of all our deer when we get back from Mont. Don't let anyone tell you you'll never rattle in the same buck twice. I've done it several times.
-
Congratulations, sounds like a great hunting trip.
-
I thought with the rut just about starting this would be a fun one to rejuvenate. I知 looking forward to starting to rattle. I figure I値l do a few sequences with my daughter this weekend.
