Title: Rem700 quality issues
Post by: wooltie on November 13, 2013, 10:48:17 AM: Anyone personally or know of someone who suffered from poor quality in recent Rem700 ADL, SPS production rifles?

I know the web is riddle with rumors of poor quality over recent years. Unsure whether these rumors apply to entry level rifles only (SPS, ADL).

Intend to purchase a new rifle soon and am considering SPS 700, vs Weatherby V S2

Post by: skeeter 20i on November 13, 2013, 10:56:10 AM: We have 2 ADL's and one BDL that are just fine. The ADL's are .243 and 30.06 both my sons can shoot very well with both of them. I would buy another.

Post by: BsB on November 13, 2013, 12:43:49 PM: I've got a SPS and the only complaint I have is the stock. Towards the fore end where the barrel rests/cradles in the stock is kinda flimsy. I've been wanting to bed it but will probably buy a different stock before I do. I haven't noticed any accuracy issues with it though.

Also every now and then, after my first round is fired, when I pull the bolt back to push another round in, it doesn't always grab the next round to feed. I make sure when I load it the rounds are inserted to the back of the internal mag. Its only when going from the first to second round, third and fourth rounds feed fine.

A friend of mine has the same SPS as me with the same issues. Another friend has a 700 BDL 7mm and a 700 BDL buckmaster .243 and I've never heard him complain about either.

Friend of mine had the same exact issue with his 7mm. Sent it in and they replaced it!

I've considered .260 rem and .25-06, but I don't hand load. All makes are on the table. I own an A-bolt and savage axis currently. Sticking with a synthetic stock. I'm not 100% sold on Remington, just because it has "been around".

Post by: Bookworm007 on November 14, 2013, 09:12:17 AM: Recoil from 308 and 30-06 is almost indentical, weight of the rifle is was really effects how much recoil is felt by the shooter. If you want a standard caliber and to step down in recoil I would suggest a 270. Still potent enough for most game with proper shot placement.

The accutrigger is fantastic or even the older model 10's and 110's could have the trigger worked down to #3 no problem and are plenty accurate. All that being said my hunting partner uses a Remmington 700 and has had no problems.

I had to send it back 2 times to remington. the first time the stock was cracked and the second time it would not cycle the shells. I spent over a thousand dollars on this "new"rifle and was disappointed with the lack of detail. However after those problems were fixed. It shoot under MOA for me. I am a 700 fan.

Post by: jyerxa on November 16, 2013, 07:19:19 PM: I got my BDL 7mm in the late 70's. I did have a bluing build up inside the bolt so the spring froze up so you couldn't close the bolt. Gunsmith fixed it for free for me called it a manufacturers defect and got payed by Remington. And that is my rifle of choice still to this day. It is an excellent rifle. But yeah, your talking about the newer rifles. Ya know there has been all kinds of negative press about the Remington s and Smith and Wesson since the 70's. Nothing is perfectly made. I think it is the liberal anti-gunners hobby horsing on some well known names. :dunno: I've had trouble with Star and Charter Arms. (Pistols) But never a Ruger. :tup: I never hear about them?

Receiver holes had a bunch of crap in them and had to be chased.

Rounds don't feed great out of the magazine.

The finish rusts like crazy. That seems to be par for the course on Remington's with the matte black finish.

the black finish rusts badly
the stock sucks - bad
the action isn't smooth
the magazine sucks with those two hidden clips you have to push on both sides and take your gloves off and it makes a lot of racket

and it doesn't hold a group.

It's ok as a kids rifle but I was looking for a dual purpose gun with the length of pull add on pad thingy with the stock - it's garbage and won't suit me for a coyote/cat predator gun. It's a 200 yard gun as is. For a .243 it's remarkably inaccurate.

Own 3 of them .....223 / 243 and 25-06 ...they all shoot well ....But like Carp said if you want a good gun for the price go with a Tikka ...they shoot great right out of the box .... I just added a Winchester to my collection but that was not cheap :chuckle:

Post by: snowpack on November 19, 2013, 06:04:26 PM: I've noticed quality issues over time between different year 700s. The older ones had better fit and finish and less plastic. Bluing on the older ones seemed more uniform and smooth, the bolts didn't rattle as much, mags functioned more smoothly, etc. The newer ones are still good and function, but I thought that difference in quality over say 20 years was noticeable.

Post by: runningboard on November 19, 2013, 06:19:58 PM: bought an SPS youth in .243 @ a Sporting goods store in Missoula, bought a new 24" take-off barrel in 7mm-08 from a full-size SPS at a gunshow, put them together with a 2-7 Leupold and had the trigger tuned to a crisp 3 pounds and never have had an issue with it in 6 years. no rust, accurate, always feeds reliably, only complaint which isn't that big a deal is that the stock being hollow in the rear it echoes when bumped. I put one of those elastic cartridge holders on it and solved that problem. Fits my ex perfectly and she still uses it and loves it.
also have a old 700 BDL lefty in .243 that I plan on turning into my go to coyote gun. don't know how old it is but is in good working order with nary an issue.

I also have a sender that consistently shoots sub MOA, not uncommon to have .5 moa groups at 220 yards if im shooting well.
if I were to buy another rifle now it would be a 700 or a savage. but I wouldn't buy a SPS :twocents:
