Just got back home from a 2 day duck hunting trip with a few friends here on the east side. We bagged 25 mallards total and 2 had rice breast. Never seen a duck with rice breast before which seems like a very high average. :dunno:

That'd probably not be a good idea unless you really charred it up. It is a protozoan that needs to live in a carnivore's digestive tract as part of its live cycle...

I usually shoot 2-3 per season. They say they are safe to consume, but I won't try it. I pitch the breasts when they are like that. One of the ones I shot was banded and provided all the data on it, so they could have some info based on the band information. Never heard back on it.

I got this one last Saturday, it's my first one of this season but I got at least 3 last year out of 48. It's always a bummer when I get a bird with R.B. because there is no way I'd eat it. :puke:

Sittin here looking at my mutt... he says he'd be willing to take the chance :chuckle:
I'm sure you're right, probably wouldn't hurt them at all if you killed the little buggers. Hell, I've seen my boy chow down on a steaming log from another dog, so I'd bet a little bit of cooked protozoa ain't going to hurt anything...

Your dog will be fine, just cook it thoroughly. It's safe for people too, I just can't do it.

Just think how many get eaten by people that pluck and roast... yuck. One of the widgeon triple I shot last week had it, trap bait.

Eaten several of them, never heard of rice breast. Seriously.
I always make jerky. Meat never gets that hot. Now I'm worried!

Freezing will kill anything as well. Would feed to animals (pigs, dogs, etc) or relatives... But wouldn't touch it myself. I've seen the equivalent of that in silver salmon as well. Really sad when you are pumped for fresh samon on the BBQ and see those (round and white in salmon) all over and in the fillets :(

The ones in fish are no real problem as long as you do not eat them raw. I've eaten my weight in those eating rock fish - tasty! Connective tissue worms in bear are about the same. Pick out what you can and try to make it look tasty then cook and eat. You want to cook bear med well to well anyway since you do have a chance of Tric'. By the way - Freezing will not kill Tric'!

Its an aesthetic thing. For unknown reasons, sarcocysts can be much larger in ducks than other animals. However, the prevalence of sarcocystis in elk is over 90%, and occurs in all species of deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, rabbits, etc. However, in other species the cysts are microscopic. If you eat game, you've eaten sarcocystis. On the bright side, there is no known effect of ingestion by the carnivore host (you, me and the dog): the protozoans reproduce sexually in our GI tract, and are crapped out. The herbivore host is the one that gets the muscle cysts where the asexual reproductive phase is found, and where very heavy cyst loads can impair muscle function.
That said, I've shot them and disposed of the carcass.

Man up, just turn the lights low and chow down. I pick some of the red worms out of rockfish but don't care if I eat a few. Same with a apple that might have a worm in it, don't look at just eat it.

I've heard about this before and shot a few myself. However the few I shot, the rice looked much different on my birds. Next time I shoot one I'll save a pic. In my dirty birds, the "rice" was on end portruding from the breast after the skin is peeled. I always threw out carcass, washed hands, knife and work table, then breasted remaining birds.

Maybe find a trapper that wants bait. I also use my carcasses for crab bait.

The King, the King upon whom rules must we obey. But, rules from which you speak may state otherwise upon the people of King's land. Oh such a question upon us riddled. For clear an understanding I know not. The book upon which rules be written I shall and in so much as the mind can comprehend read. Though I know not upon those pages shall the man find such an answer. But try I shall the answer find.

If legal it is not, then F the man because if I legally shoot the bird, and do not waste the meat, I should be able to do what I want with the carcass (that is not too disturbing or obscene anyways). As far as I know, you can use them for bait as long as it is not visible to raptors. Unless eagles are starting to dive for food, I think crab bait probably works into that. :dunno: And, if the bird has rice breast, wdfw can come eat it if they don't want me using it. :twocents:
