Title: Helping a friend, chehalis area
Post by: STIKNSTRINGBOW on November 14, 2013, 09:01:52 AM: I am a bowhunter, but a friend of my daughters got into hunting this year.
He decided to hunt modern, so I did not bug him much this summer.
After asking him if he had gotten out during general season (Oct.), he told me he went a few times, but no luck.
I decided to accompany him one day, found a good spot, he went back the next morning and missed. :bash:
I found out he really had no idea on how to sight in a rifle.
He had "bore sighted" his rifle, then shot at a target, but thought 3" high at 25 would be close at 100. :chuckle:
Due to his work schedule, he asked me if I could do it, as it is dark by the time he gets off work.
I said "sure", I got a box of shells, some targets, gas money...
Then realized I cannot go out in the woods during modern firearm with a 30/06 and no valid tag, and shoot.
Anyone on this board a member at PeEll ? or have a tag and a few hours to go shoot a box of shells ?
I know I should make him sight in his own rifle, but as long as he gave me gas money and shells, who am I to refuse ?

I don't think the State considers us poachers for target shooting in the woods... yet. Don't forget your discover pass though if you need to take a leak driving through Capital Forest. :rolleyes:

Just being in an open area with an /06 on the opening day of late modern without a valid tag makes me nervous, I would rather not "explain it to the judge"
Also hoping I could actually do it at the range, been a while since I sighted in a rifle.
But, figure if I can get him at least hitting close to where he should, be a step in the right direction.
Then I have all spring and summer to get him shooting his bow...
He is an alright guy for a newb, just needs to learn a few things.

Not with a .30/06 in an area open to deer or elk, copied from page 78 of the regs:

10. Hunting during modern firearm deer
or elk seasons:
You may not hunt wildlife during any
modern firearm deer or elk season,
with any firearm .24 caliber or larger
or containing slugs or buckshot for big
game, unless you have a valid license,
permit and tag for one of the following:
deer, elk, black bear, cougar, mountain
goat, bighorn sheep, or moose.

Post by: Blacktail Sniper on November 14, 2013, 05:00:49 PM: Who is going to win if he is stopped, in the woods, with a rifle over .24 caliber and no modern tag? Maybe he can convince the WDFW officer what he is doing is just simply going target shooting and he isn't hunting, maybe not.

I was responding to him being told to say he was just "Coyote hunting" and he would be legal, not the case unless he has a modern tag or was carrying something smaller than a 24 caliber.

Not worth the chance.
But he was WAY off center, almost 6" at 25 yards !
I got him centered at 80, but my groups went to hell after putting a box through the tube.
Been a while since I shot a rifle... Think I'll stick with my bow.
He only has tomorrow anyhow, hopefully he learned something.
I got almost a year to educate him before next season, now that I know he is serious.
