Drew a cow tag for this unit in january. Never hunted it. can anyone help me with clues where to scout. is this strictly weyerhauser property? I live near the dalles so its aways away
-
Get into weyerhauser and glass clearcuts. Should be a fun easy hunt.
-
:yeah: shoot one uphill.
-
Let me know when you go and maybe I will ride over with you. I know the unit very well. I grew up in it. I am just down the road from you.

Solid offer right there.

I have this tag also. I've never hunted there, but a close friend of mine only hunts there
-
take your time and look off the roads that finger off rose valley road thats where a buddy of mine goes every year
-
Do you have the gps coordinates, I want to check out rose hill road as well.
-
I live in the coweeman in rose valley. Pm me if you need or want some help or extra set of eyes.
-
I will be hunting there January 4th with a friend that drew the tag. Hoping to get his 1st elk.

Where the hell is Rose Hill road?
-
:bash: met to say rose valley just got my roads crossed is all :IBCOOL:

That time of year is almost a gimmie anywhere in the unit. There's some good timber on the south end to hunt. try up little kalama river road.

:yeah:
My buddy has drawn the tag twice and both times we got it filled on new years day. drive up kalama river road, last year he shot one right off the 6400. Both times we were able to get the elk out whole. One had hoof rot really bad, the other didn't have it at all. Good luck to you!

Question for you guys that know the area. I have the January cow tag and have hunted several times in the Rose Valley road area or have driven through it to the Toutle so I know it a bit. I was wondering about the Kalama River road as I have never been in that area. I would be guessing the access to that road is south of Longview? I used to haul logs down to the Kalama river and went to a yard about 5 miles south of the last Longview exit and it was just off the freeway by the river. Is the access to that area in that vicinity? Also, will that country be open in January for vehicle access, is it Weyco and is it a big area? Thanks for your responses......Les

Drew a tag also. S/B fun way to start off the New Year. Good Luck & be sure to post some pics. Probably will do a scouting trip end of Dec. :bfg:
-
The two times that my buddy had the tag we were able to drive up kalamariver road all the way into the unit and the roads were open. You shouldn't have any problem filling the tag. Last time he killed one right off of the 6400 line. Good luck fellas!

Thats the right exit. Kalama River rd. Follows the river to the haedwaters.
Not sure if it will be open. But I'm sur you will get some sort of access. Probably a map with acces points.
Mostly Weyco.
Its a huge area!
You will get your elk!
Good luck and keep us posted.
-
Guys....Thanks a bunch for the replys. I have one of the Weyco maps from down there from a couple years ago when I hunted the Toutle and I will do some checking on it as it will show most of the main lines. I kind of figured that exit I took with the logs must have been the one but it really helps to get a local perspective. Let me know if you guys ever draw any tags up in the King county area....worked for Weyco in the woods for years and hunted it for life and its great to share info as we are all just trying to cope with all this new private land/permit crap and get a little hunting in.....Thanks..............Les
-
PM me with your phone number, if the elk are in my field I will call you. They usually hang around for a few days every week or so.
-
If you go up kalama river rd. it's about 12-13 miles up river before you can get to some area to access (6200 line). Good luck! Don't forget the left side of the 6400 is coweeman and right side is toutle(heading up the 64).
-
Thanks for the offers and info....I will definitely check my maps that list the coweemann and toutle and get the boundaries down. My brother in law works for Weyco down in the area and I talked with him today and going to have him see if he can get info on access and if it will be open during the week. I will probably get some stuff from wdfw in the next couple weeks too I would imagine. Thanks again....any info helps.........................Les

So is the 6400 road the logging road before Wild Horse Creek, or does the 6400 come off of Gobar Creek Rd? I hunted clear cuts off of Kalama River road last year and got a Black Tail Forky during Modern Rifle. I am planning on hunting archery Deer and Elk around the same area next year. Any advice would be nice, although I did notice a lot of Elk sign where I got my deer. So I figure I would have a shot for both during archery. Why do people put in for Elk tags in the Coweeman unit for Archery? I have never put in for tags, so I dont really know why someone would do it for the Coweeman with such a long Archery season, and if the chances for getting one during the early or late is already pretty good? Curious if anyone has ever used cow decoys to draw in any bulls, and has it worked? I just figure it would be difficult in such thick cover, but I guess you could try and coax them into the clear cut that way.
-
It lays like this. Off of the Kalama River Rd after you come off the old Weyco haul road the first one is the Wildhorse (6200) then the Gobar (6300) and then the 6400 which is the boundary.
-
My neighbor woke up to a herd of elk in his yard yesterday morning.
He called a friend from town to come up and they got a shot but missed.
I saw the herd by the school on my way home last night and it is starting to pick up some impressive numbers.

As far as I know there is no elk tags for archery in the coweeman. You are able to hunt early season and harvest either a cow or bull(3pt or better). The coweeman is not open during late archery. It's a muzzleloader unit at that time.
-
I live up kalama River rd at the base of the 6000 line.... make sure that they have it open during the week, as of right now they are active logging the 6200 up to the powerlines and it is walk in only .... Timm if ya need any help let me know... my backyard is Weyco land
-
Have you lived there long?
-
I have only lived here 2.5 years but my wife has lived here all her life....
-
How old is your wife if you don't mind me asking? I grew up there too.
-
33
-
She would be a few years younger but without a doubt I would know her.
-
Yeah.......her maiden name was Phillips
-
Just wondering if anyone that has a tag has heard anything about access during the week? It looks like access during the hunt is only for tag holders with the yellow permit good for Jan 1-16 but I'm not sure if that is just for weekends and hopefully the holiday as the Weyco guys will be off. Also, anyone know if there is any snow in the higher areas?....not much here in King county so I am guessing not to many elk have dropped into the bottom areas unless that earlier shot of snow moved them. Thanks for the info.......Les
-
Can't help out with the access questions. Weyco hotline is probably your most logical source.
But I can tell you I don't think the snow level will make a hoot of difference. If permit holders are the only ones in there, pick a fat one slightly on the uphill side of the road where there is little brush or slash. Should be that easy.
-
I have this tag, I will be heading down tomorrow eve. I have a friend who is down there right now. He and his son havent seen any elk yet, just a couple of deer. I had the tag a couple of years ago, the clear cut we hunted has been logged all around it. We have to find a different area this year. Good luck to the other tag holders.
-
I will be in a big red, 1 ton Chevy Pickup with a matching canopy. If you see me flag me down and I will share any info I have. :hello: I may brew you up a fresh cup of coffee if you ask nice. :chuckle: I can't wait to get off work so Me and the Mrs can hit the road.

Ripper..any luck yet?
-
Did Ripper just disappear :dunno:

I think him and the misses are down there mixing it up.
-
A buddy of mine got his yesterday ...they drove down at 3am had breakfast and was done by 8:30 ...one of the biggest cows I think I ever seen come from down there ..Very healthy and no Hoof Rot .....Just a little heads up

he posted on another topic :dunno:
-
My Oldest son and i are headed down Friday, 1st time in the area. He has the tag, I'm just the 'enabler'.
-
No I didn't disappear, although sometimes I wish I could. :chuckle: We saw a few elk but couldn't get a shot. I'm kinda limited with arthritis in my ankle. Sometimes it's not to bad and I can walk ok, like in the summer when it's warm. Right now with the cold damp weather, like every hunting season, they ache most all the time. I hate to say it but I mostly road hunt. I look for clearcuts and glass early/late. If I find good sign then I will walk into the timber a ways and sit during the day on a good game trail. The elk I saw where off the road and by the time I could get out and get off the road, they were gone. I have to go see my cardiologist due some abnormal heartbeats and some slight chest discomfort, so I'm not sure how much I will be able to hunt. It doesn't appear to be serious, it's just a precautionary thing.
-
Hope all is well when you see the doc...
-
picked up our last cow today. With the wind and rain coming, I was extremely happy. It was also our biggest one. I shot her in a clear cut 267 yrd shot in the boiler room. She never took a step
-
Good job Bob. I would like to get out tomorrow and or Wed, but I need someone to go along and give me a hand. Anybody want to go?

Wish I could Ripper, but I took 3 days vacation filling my tag and am back to work today. Once I figure out how to send a private message, I know a couple of areas that might fit you bill
-
Ripper,
I might be able to come along to lend a hand Wednesday.
Where would you be traveling from and to?
Feel free to shoot me a pm OK?
-
Got mine 1/13 & packed out today. No hoof rot. We were parked in a small clearcut that we saw elk a couple days before & they returned to same spot & shot her at 3:30. Good Luck!!
