After all these years finally shot my first wood duck. Shot at about 15 yards. Beautiful bird and peters taxidermy has more buisiness on the way. Only bird of the day for me and brother shot a ring neck. Still very slow in my areas but hoping it will pick up. Saw very few birds but very happy.

 Wow Nice! By far one of my favorite ducks! If i ever get one i will be doing the same.
-
He looked nicer on the back when I wiped him down. He looks a little ruffed in the pic but when cleaned up he was a beauty. Will be doing a standing pose for the best look.
-
Post a pic when he's done can't wait to see!

On my bucket list !! Sweet bird
-
I will but that might be a while. Takes time with my budget to pay it off but they work with me and do an awesome job.
-
Very nice I remember my first woody.

Great looking bird

Beautiful duck! Good coloring on him.

That is the one duck I want to mount, I just need to start duck hunting first :chuckle:
-
Very pretty bird, I have been wanting one to hang on the wall sine I started duck hunting 3 years ago, its been a lucky year for me me as I got my first in Montana and my second on JBLM.

Nice work. I carry 1 pair of pantyhose in my gear for just this reason. I was told years ago after having a mallard taxidermied, that if you stick a freshly shot bird in a pair of pantyhose immediately after you shoot it, it improves the quality of the mount by keeping the feathers from getting scuffed. (I hope this is true. Otherwise this guy's had a decade long practical joke on me.)

my brother uses a soft mesh type of bag that looks kinda like very large pantyhose for all his birds, works great so even if it is a practical joke its a good idea, guess joke will be on them :chuckle:

That's what I've always been told. Didn't let the bird touch anything after the shot and brought it straight to the taxi. The only scuffed feathers were on wing from the shot which cleaned up decent and will be well taken care of by jo dean. She can do wonders with birds. Can't wait to see it done.

Mine went to peters taxidermy as well, hope they come out good as ive got a BT buck there as well

Great job

Right on! I am jealous. My only two woodies were hens... It was first light, and my first year and I couldn't identify in air like I can now.
-
You won't be disappointed with there quality. As far as chances go I could have shot a hen 2 weeks ago but let my buddy shoot first because I wanted my first wood duck to be a drake. This time I shot the drake and hesitated on the hen and she flew to live another day.
-
Wishing I didn't hesitate because that would have been really cool to mount a pair.
-
Nice mature one it looks like. Pretty
-
Jealous!!
I've not ever brought down a woodie either and it's on top of my list... just need to figure out a place near Yakima to drop the boat in.
Great looking bird - too bad it didn't have any jewelry!
-
Never shot a duck with a band. After a few hundred birds I think I'm due.
-
Very pretty birds.

Congrats in your first wood duck! They are definitely a gorgeous bird! Tons I them in my area. If I hunter sits in the right spot he could easily get a limit full of drakes down here
