My girlfriend Michelle and I have been very supportive of our husbands hunting addictions. However we put our feet down this year. We took our kitchen pass and made the most of it.
We got Michelle's buck on 14 Oct. After we field dressed it and the guys came to get her deer, we continued to scout and hunt one for me. We found an great area just over the hill from where Michelle got her buck.
Our next kitchen pass/ day off was on 19 Oct. We found more sign and some scarred trees. We thought they were bear rubs but after we showed the pictures to the guys they said "big rubs are made by big bucks".
Now it was my turn. When we got there, two other hunters were walking through the area. So we backed out and waited for them to pass through. It wasn't long before we were able to set up right were we wanted to be, over looking the area with all the rubs. The fog was set in heavy, and there was no wind. Michelle was up a tree to be my spotter, and this guy came walking in about 10 AM. Michelle was pointing at him but the only thing I could see from the ground was alters above the tail grass. NO CLEAR SHOT. He came in to about 15 yards from me and Michelle was able to get a short video of him. He gradually feed his way across a low draw and up a hill. Twenty minutes later after going in and out of cover, he was at 90 yards when he stopped and gave me a nice clear broad side shot. It felt good and I thought it was a good shot but he didn't jump like they do in the hunting shows. My guide said it looked like a good hit. When we got to the hill I knew my .243 had rung true and we had good sign. We followed the sign for about 50 yards and reality hit me when we saw him laying under the trees. Michelle and I both could not believe what a beautiful buck he was. We sent the guys the second picture you see here and they were hear soon after we had it field dressed. After watching my husband fill our walls with mule deer and elk I know I have been blessed with a trophy to be proud of. Thank you for all the great comments and here is my story but I still have a hard time believing how blessed I have been with my first deer. :)

Here is one of the rubs we found scouting.

that is definatly one of the nicest blacktails i have ever seen, i assume your getting a head mount done? if i can offer some advice, take him to jack paige, he owns mineral lake taxidermy, this guy knows blacktails through and through, his blacktail work is unmatched, he lives eats and breaths the gray ghost, he has about a 6th month turn around because he doesnt do alot of other stuff, he specializes in elk and deer mostly, once in awhile he will do something else, or if he is to far away i would go with BUCKLUCKY, i believe he is right close to yelm, he also does true justice to the gray ghost
-
Thanks but my husband has already taken care of getting it mounted. Now he has to figure which on of his mounts has to come down so we can fit mine on the wall. LOL :chuckle:
-
Have you had it scored?
-
No , I'm going to take it to the sportsmans show and have it scored there. Anybody want to guess what it may score? :dunno:
-
My guess is BIG 8)....but as first deer all three are trophies to be proud of.

That would be awesome :)
-
i bet he goes 140+ i dont get tired of looking at that buck thats for sure, if i was you bonnie, i would be tight lipped about your spot, of course your hubby will probably never let you hunt again after killin that pig :chuckle: but i am sure he has passed his genetics on in that area, you could have a spot of a life time, but hey if you ever get tired you can pass it on over to me :chuckle: :chuckle: awesome buck ma,am   cant wait for the score

LOL that's his smile...LOL he tried so hard early season to find a deer to hunt . I'm so glad he did it... His father couldn't close the deal at his age and gave up and doesn't hunt to this day so I didn't want that to repeat it's self! My first deer was a small doe!
He might have nerves of steel...he went to the Archery Nationals this year in Darrington and took 1st place...and was 400 points ahead of the #2 guy :yike:

Good Gracious!!!

That's awesome that he was able to transfer his skills to the field. His dedication continues to pay dividends. Way to put him on a buck. Hopefully he can continue to spend time with grandpa. 8) With his drive fueled by success maybe he can get his dad back into it too. ;)

congrats young man, from the size of that boy i sure hope he is playing football to :chuckle:

Bonnie why haven't you posted this on the 5 point Mule/Blacktail thread?

 WOW Yote! Tell your son AWESOME first buck! Love it! Have you posted his story to go with it?
-
We were hunting some of my timber spots the second day of opening day. Doing an evning hunt. Told him we need to hurry. I wanted to hit one more spot before its to dark. He's about 20 yards in front of me. And I see a deer bedded in this brush looking right at me
. I tell come back to me he walked past a buck. He's says where I told him see that white spot that a buck beded . Mabe 20' from us told him aim for the white spot. I moved to the right about 10' incase it gets up . Boom his gun goes off . It's head drops. We walk up to it I about s- it when I see the size of this thing. One proud papa and son. Shot it with a 243 Rossi single shot. He's gotten 2 more black tail butt not quit as big.
-
That's awsome , Now that he is older it will be tougher for him to top that one, without Dad to point them out for him. :chuckle:
-
Another 3 pt for the books
-
The one on the right is his first muley. Mine on the left. They were runnig together opening morning public land.
-
Bonnie,
I for the most part could give a crap about blacktailed deer. They just don't do it for me....
But....with that beautiful buck, I'm happy to make an exception!
-
Bonne dose your deer have 5 on one and 3 the other plus I gards. One heck of first buck congrats . I'm going to it will score around 130 - 135. The most importan thing is it scores a spot on your wall. And don't think that you can't do it again. I'm 52 and have 8 trohy black tails and shot biggest last year. Congrats again.

It is a symmetrical 4x5 with eye guards the taxidermist has it green score at 142 with 7 inches of deductions.
I will be taking it to the sportsman's show next week to get an official score to measure it.
The fifth point is in-between the main fork on the right.
Here is another angle.
I will try to get a better picture of the fifth point this weekend.
-
Seeing that pic the scores about right. Just wasn't sure. All my big bucks are 3x3 with I gards . I have yet to shoot a true 4 x 4 with I gards. And I've taken over 25 black tail. How old do you think it was.
-
Just got the score...net is 127 1/8" Gross was 134 7/8".
-
NICE!!!
-
wow nice rack bonnie, how wide was he, I shot a buck very similar but longer eye guards and bigger back splits maybe I need to get him measured by a pro he may make all time book.are you gonna put yours in the short term book
-
Nice Rack... Great Trophy. Are you putting it in the book?
-
Thank you. Yes, it will be in the 4th Addition of the Record Book for Washington's Big Game Animals. It also took third place at the Puyallup Sportsman's show.
-
Just got my mount hung on the wall.
