Leopard Curs that is. Went bear hunting in northern CA this weekend. Horrible weather. Lots of fun and one bear race that lasted about an hour before the bear went into some lava tubes and we called the dogs off. Probably came accross 10-12 bear tracks but the heavy rain from the past three days left very little scent. Lots of fun but no bears put up on this trip.
My hunting partner, Randy Oller, 67 years young and still running up and down hills chasing dogs!!!

The closest dog is only 17 months and she has been on a BUNCH of bears, she is going to be something special:

thats alota hounds in there :chuckle:
-
Actually nope, no hounds at all in the bunch, just Leopard Curs.
-
i thought you was tellin me there considered a hound now too?
-
UKC open the registration up for Leopard to be the 7th hound, however diehard ALCBA members would never register their curs as hounds and being that Mr. Oller is the owner of the ALCBA registry, them there dogs will never be hounds :) Those are registered Leopard Curs.
-
Fred, Great looking bunch of curs there, with dogs looking like that it might persuade me to try a few of them. Tell me about them a little would ya, especially when it comes to striking trailing and treeing, are the pretty vocal, like a hound?
-
:) How have you been! They are everything my blueticks were with one exception, the way they handle. They are plenty cold nosed Lep curs, they open every bit as much as my blueticks did, tree just as hard and just as long. I have seen Randy put them on a track and they open up and head off hard and I have seen him find smaller tracks and call the dogs back, they come back and jump right back up on the box. They rig just like a hound. I have been to a tree with a bear in it and the dogs are hammering away, take photos and Randy will tell them let's go, back to the truck. They all leave with him...no leashes. I am not BSing you they are just as effective, fast, gritty and handle like a dream. Are they all perfect, not by a long shot. But I am much happier with these curs then I was with my hounds. They tend to hunt a smaller patch of land, which in this day and age is good with so much land being smaller chunks. They seem to me to be easier to trash break. They come in an assortment of colors, black and tan, black brindle, merle, blue merle, high tan. Too much white is undersiable. But here is the thing I love about these dogs, they cannot be bred until three guys witness and sign off that the dog can start it's own track and trail and tree it's own game. That is why, IMO the UKC will ruin Leopards that are registered as hounds. They are the flavor of the month right now and guys will be breeding lep to lep no matter how they hunt and you will end up with a ton of junk out there. The ALCBA will maintain it's strict registration policy. I have actually seen guys state the following, which blew me away: "The UKC move will be better to register more dogs and expand the number of leps, not necessarily good for the breed." If it's not good for the breed then it shouldn't be done, IMO. Only time will tell. If you were to try one of these dogs out I would recommend a permanetly registered ALCBA dog or pup. There are some really good ones out here on the west coast.

Good looking bunch of dogs, I'll stick with jack russels, and Blue dogs. Doesnt matter what kind of dog it is as long as they want to catch. Seen good Blue's, Walker's, Black mouths, fiests,, never a bad leapord very nice looking bunch.

i dont think i could ever give up on hounds, although not having to have leads all the time would be nice. but i've seen hounds that dont need to be leashed either, only a few though :chuckle:

Yes I have seen some really nice handling hounds as well, everyone has their preference and all breeds get the job done, I love the way hounds look and sound and someday when I move out in the country with no neighbors I'll probably have at least one hound :) You should try one of these leopards though someday....but be careful suddenly one day you'll go out to your kennel and there will only be leopards sitting there staring back at you :):)

That's pretty interesting. I dunno *censored* about hound hunting but it sounds like a total kick and these dogs really sound like a neat breed.

My family has a Jack Russel and one day I was throwing a quail that I had shot for him to retrieve and he fetched it every time. I was almost going to take him out one day, but I think he would just run off and get lost chasing things and his legs are so short he would probably get tired really fast.
