So I was talking with some guys at school toddy and thought I would get your opinions. I currently have a rem 700 .30-06 that I use for elk/deer. I have a little savage .22 for my kids and thinking about buying a ruger American compact .308 for my wife to start hunting with. My question is to you is.... If this was your gun cabinet, what 3 other rifles would you buy to complete your collection?....Fire away!!!
-
M77 in .243..tika in .243 and remington r25 in......243
-
.243
.270
.300 Win Mag
-
I have a m77 243. Nice gun. Also love my m77 in 264 win mag and my mdl 700 in 300 win mag
-
.22 cal centerfire something, or even .17 centerfire
big long range gun
evil black rifle - AR15 something
-
.17 7mm-08 375H&H, 17 for light varmint rimfire you don't need to reload and have good cheaper ammo, 7-08 for the wife lighter recoil good for deer or elk and a little flatter shooting than the .308, the 375 H&H for zombies, nah its just a fun gun to shoot for from a mouse to a moose(I've shot both with mine) and even an Elephant.

You have everything covered if you have a 30-06 and a .22 Long Rifle.
But, if you must have 3 more rifles besides the .308 for your wife..........I would get:
.338 Win mag (for a dedicated elk rifle)
.22-250 (for the long shots at coyotes)
30-30 (for hunting the brush for blacktails)
-
6.5 Creedmoor
AR 223
AR 458 SOCOM
17 WSM
22 mag
Plus a few more secrets
-
I agree with a speed demon .20 or .22,Perhaps a savage slug gun for wetside blackies and a .338 or bigger for just in case.
-
17 hmr, 243, 300 wsm. Always fun to dream
-
AR10 variant in .260
Remington 700 in 6.5 Creedmoor
Daley/CZ Mini Mauser in 6.8 spc
-
Can't go wrong with a .223 or .22-250. I'm running with .22LR, .22-250, .223, .280Rem and .300 Win Mag as my main go to's. I guess I'd like to have another .243 or .257 Weatherby one of these days.
-
So you have a .22, .308 and 30/06
I'd add .223 or 22-250, .300 ultra mag or .338 mag and one of the following, .450 bushmaster, .458 socom or a 12ga rifled slug gun
-
.257 wby is one I end up using a lot. Thinking of getting .264 win mag and .270 wsm
-
.300 weatherby. Kill anything on the planet.
-
My gun cabinet was completed in 1978 with the purchase of my Remington Model 700 BDL 7mm Mag. With that I had my brush gun and now my open country rifle.
I was 14 or 15 when I got my brush gun. I had been eye balling a octaganal barrel lever action 30-30 at Earnst for about the previous two years and was saving up my money to get it. Dad came home and told me he found a really sweet deal on a brush gun at work and sold me on it. Of course I couldn't wait to get my own first rifle (carbine) and handed him over my piggy bank.
So he came home from work with a gun case that was bulging in all the right spots. I could see the outline of my first rifle (carbine). I was just pumped with adrenaline and anticipation. Dad was smiling from ear to ear like any proud father does when he hands his son his very first rifle all his own.
I can't remember who unzipped the gun case. I think dad did. But that was the most butt ugly rifle I had ever seen. :yike: :yike: If my face didn't express the site of horror at seeing something as ugly as sin it never has since. :puke:
But that is my number two. A Remington model 300 35 cal. And I like it now days with affection. :chuckle:
And every thing else is just for fun. Well there is that self defense issue too. ;)
-
I love my wby .30-378 for long range and 30-30 lever action for in close. Then the .270
-
Since you already have a 30/06 you really don't need anything else. However, since you are apparently an "elk addict," I would get a 338 Win. Mag. And as others have suggested, a lever action 30/30 rifle would be nice. And to top off the collection, a bolt action 223 would be good to have.
-
Well you've pretty much got the .30 cal covered so to fill in three other guns I'd probably add a varmint or varmint/deer combo rifle, a flat shooter and a heavy pounding round.
Varmint = .22 (.223 or .22-250) Combo would be 6mm or .25cal (243 or 257 Bob)
Flat Shooter = any of the 270's with my preference being the .270 WSM. I'm a big fan of the 7Rem, but with todays bullets the fast .270's will do just about anything the 7mm would inside 500 yards.
Pounding round = 8mm or .338 (.325WSM or .338 WIN)
With those you would be set for anything from fox to coastal grizzly.
Don't forget you should own at least one shotgun!
-
You have a lt covered with what you have. I'd ad a dedicated varminter in 223 or 22-250, a 7mm of some sort and a big thumper caliber of 338 win mag or bigger.
-
Since every applicable use and cartridge have already been well-covered;
you could learn to shoot only the '06 till it's like an extension of yourself.
"Beware the 1 gun man" ... heard that somewhere...
-
Well 3 gun plan is almost complete. 338 RUM for elk and larger, 264 Win mag for deer sized game. As for my 3rd caliber, don't really need one, but a compact high power lever gun for all aroubd thick woods hunting would round it out. Maybe a 444 marlin.

Being a Ruger fan, I would say M77 7mm Mag, Ruger American in 270 (mine is a tack driver, cover 3 shots with my thumb at 200yards) and M77 in 30-06
-
Rem 06
AR 204
AR 223
AR 6.5 Grendel
-
.22-250
.338 RUM
12 GA
-
tikka in 243, 25-06, 270 wsm. awesome cuz I have and shot them all and they are dead on out of the box. I don't know why but they are within 2 inches out of the box, all 3 of them. mike w
-
300 rum
264 win
6.8 SPC
-
.264 win mag
7mm rem. mag
.300 RUM or .338 win mag.
And an AR of course.
-
i'm a practical kind of guy, and i only own one centerfire rifle at the time. it's chambered in 7mm-08, and i can't see myself "needing" anything else, especially for hunting the extremely limited modern seasons in this state(i've gone to muzzleloader for deer, and have never hunted elk).
however, just for fun, i really wouldn't mind picking up a couple lever actions in .30-30, .35 rem, or .45-70. maybe a big elk/bear gun in .338 mag, and something small for plinking/varmints for longer ranges like a .223 or .22-250.
shotguns on the other hand, i can twist up all kinds of justification to buy another one. they're like steelhead rods to me...i just need at least one more!
-
270, 300wm , 338 rum .
-
When I was younger my father told me "aint nothin' that needs killin' that can't be killed with a .308/30-06".
He's a funny guy, you'd have to know him and his military background to get the humor in that statement. I've never chased the "dragon" with rifle calibers, but pistol calibers, that's a whole different expensive topic.
-
.260 or something shooting a 6.5 bullet
7mm mag
338 rum
-
I wouod think about a 243 and a big 338 (not win... but bigger... edge, rum, or 338-378wby). Then a 375 of sorts h&h or 378 wby... now that is a brush gun!.
Fwiw
I have a 17hmr, 22lr, 243, 7mmrem, 30-06, 300 rum. And a few others mixed in. Some are inherited. I hunted with and killed my elk this year with a 375 h&h and it made me really want one! Was awesome!

Whats in my safe..
Marlin 22lr
Mossberg .243 bolt action Wood Stock
Remington 770 .270
Ruger American Rifle .308
Stevens Single Barrel 16 gauge break action
What I will add to the safe later:
Remington 30-06 with wood stock
20 gauge cheaper one for the boys
12 gauge for me
if the money allows, maybe an AR 15.
-
.220 Swift (should be legal for all game but not thanks to WDFW)
25-06
7mm
-
.25-06 Savage 110 w/ accu-trigger
.300 WSM Browning X-Bolt Medallion
.45/70 Marlin 1895 Guide
If I could only have one, it'd be the .25-06
-
I have a lot of guns but I really only shoot three for big game. 6.5x55 for white tail, .338 for Elk and bear and .308 for just an all around shooter.
-
If I had to choose one..... it would be 338 win mag with 210 nosler partitions
-
.270win
30-06
7mm-08
-
7mm rem mag in a savage 110
.22 LR in a savage bull barrel
Winchester 12 gauge pump
If I can't kill it with one of those I have have bigger problems..... Like that dinosaurs have come back to life.
I would love to have something in 45/70, and maybe a .223 black gun.
-
.270 win/ 22-250/.300 win mag. Pretty much covers varmits to moose.
-
My 7mm RM
My other 7mm RM

-
My Encore in 7mm Rem. Mag. 26" Stainless fluted bbl.

my daughter shoots a ruger bolt action in 7mm-08, awesome gun, she is 15 and it flat hammers deer, my son who is 17 shoots a savage bolt action in 30-06, i shoot a ruger #1 single shot falling block in 30-06, heavy gun for sure, shoot flat awesome and smooth... i wish i still had my 30-30, it gt stolen from my dads house when i was in the army :'( i loved that gun, and they are awesome for those typical westside rainy deer hunts when you just flat cant keep your optics of any kind dry, its tough to beat a lever action 30-30 with open sights in the brush and rain :twocents:
-
My 7mm RM
My other 7mm RM
My 3rd 7mm RM
Yeah, I like the caliber just a little bit. :chuckle:

sooo... isn't the term "Caliber" saposed to mean bore diameter rounded the the nearest hundredth of an inch??
As in 30 caliber, or 27 caliber, or 50 caliber???
what's with all the 0.XXX answers? and what's with all the millimeter answers? lol :chuckle:
uh... my answer would be 30 :dunno: :chuckle:
-
1: Savage model 12 in 22-250
2: Remington model 7 youth in 6mm for the kids
3: 45-70 lever action
Noticed there wasn't a shotgun in the mix. Better thro in a 12ga while your at it.

444 Marlin
22-250

as many of you have stated in the past.. if you have a .22 and a .30-06 class rifle you really dont need anythign else unless you are going to africa..
I started out with .303 brit as my primary caliber, but switched to .308. (ammo price, availability at the time, plus the semi-auto i always wanted was a .308..
I have a .223 now- which i got for a match target rifle, but it also suffices for coyotes and varmints..
I have a .45-70, just because I always wanted one..
-
MY BOW .... :chuckle: :chuckle:
Then >>>
.270
25-06
.243
.223
300 WSM
I may need to add a 204 in there someday !!
-
Got a few 22lr, 223, 243, 338. Id like a 6.5x284, 25wssm, 243wssm, and a 50bmg
-
.17-.22-.243-.300wssm-.300winmag.
next gun will be a .22? something.
-
Are we talking hunting guns, or just fun guns?
A small bore 20 or 22 center fire. I love the 204 Ruger.
A good short barreled carbine. If a lever action I'd go 45-70 or 450 Marlin (depending on whether or not you reload). In a bolt gun I'd go with either a 338 Federal or 358 Win.
And everybody needs a heavy game rifle. If you want something truly practical, a Ruger Alaskan in 375 Ruger is hard to beat. If you just want to have fun, the 416 Rigby and 458 Lott are an absolute riot to shoot! Not as practical as the 375 Ruger though because of the weight of the guns. :twocents:
If you're just talking a complete gun collection I'd go a different direction. You have your hunting guns covered. Now you need the fun stuff.
A target/varmint gun. The 6mm BR is a great varmint/target combo. Low recoil, extremely accurate, and factory guns available.
A specialty pistol of some kind. Whether it's a break action Contender or Encore or a bolt action like the Strikers, Weatherby CFP, or XP-100, once you're had one you'll be hooked! There's just nothing quite like pulling the trigger on a handgun which is capable of out shooting most rifles.
And finally, some sort of semi auto rifle. I'm not a big fan of the AR, AK, or SKS platforms but they are a ton of fun to shoot. I have to admit though that I bought my son a Colt/Umarex M16-22lr and it is one of the most entertaining guns I own. :chuckle:

I think if i was going to buy a rifle for my wife i would buy another Marlin bolt action .270, it is what i bought my son And it is a tack driver. And my boy shoots it well with no flinch. It feels like a 22 to me.
-
I started with my great grandfathers Remington 721 in 30 06. Then I decided to get a 338 win mag after seeing how my Dad's performed on elk. At this point I really don't need anything else but I'm thinking a lightweight 270 and something in the 243 range in an AR platform would round things out nicely
-
I'd have thought your have to have would be a .408 Cheytac
17 Remington
6.5 Creedmoor
444 Marlin
-
.58 cal muzzy
300wsm

35 Whelen for elk for you but the '06 will kill elk to many people's surprise.

Be careful where you shoot solids out of those big bores. I have witnessed dill pickle sized projectiles flying off into the distance :yike: like at metal gongs!
-
7mm rem mag or 300 WSM, 260 rem and a good lever in 35 rem or 45-70
