Title: Shout out to hunting dogs you have lost...
Post by: rtspring on November 22, 2013, 08:51:53 AM
Another thread made me think back.  I was one happy dude when I came home after school when I was 16 and there in the yard was a golden lab female.  I named her Sandy.  In 14 years we were the best of friends. I cannot even count how many ducks, pheasants, quail we killed together.

She had it all, never had to train her on anything.  I have had three labs since her and none came close to her talent..

The day came when she couldn't walk or stand and my heart was tore up.. My sister took her in and had her put to sleep..  She is buried in a field where we killed tons of Roosters over the years!!!

I will never forget you Sandy.. Love ya.

I lost only one "hunting" dog.  Ruby was a 6 month old gsp.  great potential.... lost her to parvo

I lost a nice rescue gsp to a car.

Lucky wasn't a hunter, he was so gunshy I couldn't even hold a gun around him without having run and hide under the truck.
he was a great dog though. we were at my sisters house, and he wandered down her .25 mile driveway to the street while I was inside. A lady called my cellphone (number was on lucky's collar) she said that she saw the car hit the dog, and it looked like it was hit purposely.  she said the car swerved halfway onto my sister's drive way in order to him him.
:bash: :bash:  pissed me off really bad.   I buried 2 german shorthairs within 3 weeks.

now I have weimaraners and a lab,... and I am crazy careful with them

Miss my Brittany Spaniel Patches. Got her for free in CA at a Swap Meet. She was the runt and nobody wanted her. Turned out to be a real great dog. Never hunted with her but she went everywhere with me except school.

One time while living in Port Orchard I happened to step outside and I heard her yelping, I looked toward the sound and seen her collar was caught on a downed tree. I got her free. Ever since then she never left my side. It was very interesting to see her change from being around the other family members to just hanging around me, always by my side.

Another time we were down at the river and as we were crossing a log she fell in. The current was to much for me to pull her up so I grabbed her head and forced her under the log and she popped out the other side unhurt.

When I was deployed to Desert Storm she had to be put down, I will never forget her.

Also owned a Springer. He was another great dog. Loved to hunt and be where ever I was. I never had to train him, he just did what came natural. Had to put him down a couple years ago as well.

To Patches and Max, you will always be remembered!

Deke' 2000-2012. When he was on he was on. I remember one morning he pointed eight birds in ten minutes. It was a short morning that day. Was incredible. He loved to trail also. He would get on a running bird and hunt it down. A lot of times it would almost be to the point where I was ready to give up. After the first few times of me wanting to give up I really learned to trust him when he was trailing. Miss you Deke'.

On point on my son's first pheasant hunt:

This is a d*mn tear jerker. I have had d*mn few dogs that I don't miss. Two in particular get me going. Hannah was a GSP, my first in a long line of them. She's been gone a long time But I still get misty eyed thinking about her. Skipper was a springer and if ever anyone had a friend, Skip was it, he get's me misty eyed too!

Shadow: Lab
Awesome Duck and Goose dog. We also used him pheasant hunting and was great at picking up any ducks out of the irrigation canals. Stolen from our back yard one week before hunting season. Never saw him again.

George: German Shorthair
Shadows replacement. Mainly used for pheasant hunting. Afraid of thunder and lightening and would have to sleep in the house. We had to put him down due to age and health issues.

Christy: Lab
Young female learning the ropes. Did well retrieving ducks and was used jump shooting ditches and hunting over decoys in the field. She was also getting better hunting out of a boat both in the lakes over decoys but also out at the bay. I will never forget her first snow goose retrieval....Hit by a car and died from her injuries.

Gunner- I had the pleasure of hunting with him for the last 12 1/2 years. Our first bird dog and our best. He had an incredible nose for pheasants and his helicopter tail would alert you to their presence. Thanks buddy we were truly blessed to have you in our lives not just as a hunting dog but a true friend that never judged and loved unconditionally!  :'(
