Alright I'm an avid waterfowler. I've been doing this every weekend of the season for the last five years. I've watched so many youtube vids. I've listened to buck gardners tutorials. Im not getting better. :bash: :bash: :bash:
I'm ready to pay someone to teach me. Seriously. I don't need to watch another video or listen to another tape. I need critique. I need advice on MY calling. I need to get a call that sounds good when I use it.
I hunt with one guy in particular that can talk them down. He's a great guy but not a good teacher. Is there anyone out there that can help me? I'm in Moses Lake - but I'm willing to drive. I'm also aware that the season is in full swing and most guys don't have free time. And that's okay I'm willing to wait till the off d season. I just want to line something up.

Well we are in the same boat. I have been hunting ducks 13 years. But I don't call because I am not confident in my calling. I can use a wigeon whistle.
I still kill ducks but I mostly just wait for them to find my spread.
I hunt a lot of well hunted areas so the ducks get call shy. So it works to my advantage sometimes.
Lots of video. Use to have a partner who could call.

I use the widgeon call as well. It's crazy my buddy and I will trade off calling he consistently gets the birds to come down. Not all of them will settle in back peddling but they at least give harder looks with in shooting range.
So frustrated :bash:

Another option, although it doesn't help for this season, the sportsman show is in January and I'm hoping that they will have some sort of exhibition where I can get some help with my calling.
I myself am not very good but my hunting buddy does well enough to call in some ducks. I usually work my call for like 30 mins while we take turns jumping a few nearby spots. He gives me a little feedback and we finish in the blind with him calling the rest of the day.

Troy Taylor puts on a duck calling clinic once a year or so, he calls it Duck Calling University. Troy has been the WA
State duck calling champion a few years ago. He teams up with Robert Strong who also has been the WA State duck calling champion a few times. You can get information on their calling clinic on "ruckus outfitters" website or check out Troy Taylor on facebook. Hope this helps.

Good to know my calling needs help as well.

I m just starting to waterfowl hunt. I've been twice in my life but upland hunt 30+ times a year with my German shorthair, Trigger. Lots of success and looking ot jump into waterfowl but I need critique as well. I can call coyotes with hand calls pretty well but a duck call is a whole new thing for me.

Pickup a duck commader call and instructional video. Papa Phil is one of the best duck callers of all time. I like the Uncle Si and Duck picker calls.

Post a vid of your calling so we can hear what you sound like (or get a good laugh...JK.) seriously though, hard to give tips without a grasp of your calling. I'll be back in the Basin in December, I'd meet up with you. I'm no champion but I get the job done. PM me if you want.

Learn the feed chatter and single quack and start for their. You don't necessarily need to be on the call to get the birds to finish or come to your spread. Whistle is a great tool to use or the drake call on the whistle. Some of the guys that I see in the field, sound like they are trying out for a competition and flaring birds.
When you see the ducks pass buy and you start talking to them and they crank their heads and try coming right back, remember that sequence as your doing it right.

Wow! Im overwhelmed with everyone's input. Thank you. You guys truly make this forum a community.
-Whackemstackem- Thank you for the PM. I'll be in touch very soon.
-Colin - where is the sportsman show?
-Badhabit - Thank you for recommending Troy Taylor, I'll be looking into the Duck Calling University
-Hotlunch - I've already tried that route, I'm looking for more 1on1 guidance.
-Mfowl - No way! :chuckle: as entertaining as it might be for you guys, I'm afraid it would end up on YouTube as part of those 'fail' compilations.
Thank you everyone. I'm all ears- if anyone has anything else to share...

Learning to blow a duck call was the hardest thing ever for me. I was laughed at alot.. Its how you get the air into the call, from your diaphram.. Once I got that , it was fairly easy.
Here is the thing though, I always have two duck calls on the lanyard but seldom call.. Ive killed way more ducks by just maybe a sharp quack then just let the ducks find the decoys. The later in the season the more call shy they get...
Practice by listening to ducks when they talk to each other..
Good luck...

Rodger Renolds lives in Vantage used to be a Prof at CWU in the Communications department. He used to give lessons. At the time i had him he was the waterfowl guide with the best ducks per hunter/day for 30 years of guideing... was also the only part time tenured prof

Sportsman show is in Puyallup I think late January.

I've been practicing at a local lake that has thousands of ducks on it every day (it isn't huntable) listening to the hens then trying to repeat. In my mind real ducks are better than any video, tape, teacher you could find. :twocents: Good luck, we all need it

:yeah:
Nature is your best cure.
Also, feed back is crucial... you are right that having someone tell you what you did wrong will make you better.
But.... if you record yourself, and listen back to it, you can hear it better. Maybe something that simple will make you HEAR what you are doing wrong, or right.
