I am heading over to the westide (Olympia). Taking gun and hoping to find me a couple Mountain Quail. Please help me with any recent sightings? I am on number 4 of 6 quail species in the US, trying for all. I appreciate any help. Can return the favor with upland bird areas in Central WA. New to this forum, my first post.

Better luck in California...I am from there and have shot many. I can tell you where to hunt down there. I am missing the Mearns, blue and Elegante!

Thanks! For the Info. I have seen them in the Medford, OR. Just not in Washington. I may need to go there or CA as you suggest. What is a Elegante Quail? Never heard of it. I need a mearns, bobwhite and of course the Mountain Quail.

They used to be all over the coast range out of Coos Bay down in OR. I've only seen a few scattered ones here in WA. Good luck.
I shot 74 of them in three and a half weeks of camping and elk hunting back in 89 or so. Had a lot of great dinners and only one had bbs in the breast, shot the heads off the rest with the ole full choke Wingmaster. 8)

Other Names: Benson Quail, Crested Quail, Douglas Quail, Yaqui Quail. Range: Western Mexico Subspecies: C. d. douglasii, C. d. bensoni, C. d. teres, C. d. impedita ...
An elegant quail found in a remote part of Mexico. I have a friend who has shot several and has one mounted. He has shot all species of quail. I am jealous as I had the chance to get my Blue and Mearns. I consider the Elegante a bonus.

I had a friend partnering with the Game department to release them in the blues. I've been out of the bird biz for awhile, so not sure how that all turned out.

I've seen some in fall city and snoqualmie but there always in my buddies yard

If you get a nice one it might be cool to get a male mountain and a male valley head to head like there going to fight

We used to have quite a few on the Kitsap Peninsula :dunno:. When I started pheasant hunting in the mid 90s there were some guys hunting them in Tahuhya/Dewatto (spelling maybe wrong) area. The DNR rep and Game enforcement officer actually told them where to look. We had them growing up in years where lots of trees blew down on our property but I have not even seen outside of my pens in several years. I raise mountains and they used to call in the wild ones but it has not happened in a while now. Good luck in your quest .

Tons of quail on the peninsula between Port Angeles and Sequim. California quail around all those old farms.

Thanks for all the help. I did here from a state Wildlife bio today and she mentioned the tuhaya (Sp) peninsula. Also she says around Shelton and McCleary area. I am heading to North of Belfair to the Tuhaya area. I will post how the trip goes. I am having a mount done with all males of the most common quail of the US with a small habitat scene for each species. It will go next to my Ptarmigan I shot this year while working in Alaska.

How did the trip go? Hoping for a good update and pictures :IBCOOL:.
