Just got started and got this cat. May be a while getting number 2. I fell down today and really did a number on my shoulder. Sitting here with a couple pain killers in me typeing with one hand. Still hurts though and can't do anything with my left arm. Don't see how I can do much trapping until this heals.

Here's what one of my cat sets look like from the road. Same place I caught this cat.

Nice looking set. How did the belly look on that cat?
-
very red cat. belly is pretty clear but narrow.
-
Cool looking cat
-
Way to go Bruce!!!
-
That's awesome Bruce. I'm holding out just a little longer then I think I'm gonna pull my water line up onto land for cats and coons I'd love to catch a cat. I'm hoping for snow soon so maybe I can get a look at some tracks so I'm not trying this hole cat trapping adventure completely blind.
-
I hope you heal up quick, be careful out there!! Beautiful cat!!
-
Really cool about the cat, bummer about the shoulder.
-
I've got a question for the cat master. Is that one of the walk throughs and was it set upside down?
-
god on the catch, bad on the shoulder, heal fast Bruce...we have a very cold snap due in a few days here on the eastside that really gets me in the mood to get out, loot people still hunting so Im leery about traps now
-
Is that a deer track in the first pic?
-
Very nice. I think I might start using my cat and coon sets here in the next week after I get a few more beaver and rats for some bait. Sorry to hear about the shoulder.
-
I've got a question for the cat master. Is that one of the walk throughs and was it set upside down?
No, I built some single door traps for cats that have the same trigger as my double door traps. 10x18x42
Caught two civets in my new pipe traps I had at the Rendezvous this summer also. Co2 worked good on them. Feel like I hit a home run with that idea.
-
Is that a deer track in the first pic?
I think not. Hard to say what it is. :dunno: Deer are almost as rare as gold around here anymore. :chuckle:
-
Congrats bruce, gotta be careful out there. It seems as we get older its easier to get hurt.
-
nice job on the cat hope you get lots more////////
-
Congrats bruce, gotta be careful out there. It seems as we get older its easier to get hurt.
and lots slower to heal.

Great lookin cat
-
Very cool!
-
Nice ...

I guess I'm a darn liar. Went out to pick a few traps today and shorten the line up. Trapping gods don't care how you are feeling. Have to admit todays catch made me feel pretty good except for my shoulder. Forgot the camera so you get the fur shed floor. Over head flourescent makes the cat seem redder then it really is.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0580_zps5b251241.jpg&hash=f39a1c6eeb3be13abc31257ae1eadd3d215cb6e3) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0580_zps5b251241.jpg.html)
Pretty pumped about my new civet traps and using CO2. Don't make a bit of smell.
-
Is that a 2nd cat?
-
Is that a 2nd cat?
Yep
-
Is that a 2nd cat?
Yep
Nice your off to a good start.
-
And an otter way to go!!!!
-
Bruce, I don't think I saw your pipe trap either that or I forgot, could you post a picture. I seem to remember it was for civits. thanks
-
5" PVC with a glued cap. Air tight except for the door. 5" is very hard to get but I wanted that size. 4" is too small and 6" would use too much CO2.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0572_zps5253a72f.jpg&hash=eebde9c2825fb78e97ac0fdd92bff001b20d2772) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0572_zps5253a72f.jpg.html)

The working parts of the trap slide out to load bait or remove civet.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0574_zpsf24888ff.jpg&hash=59fe5739b624f642061c669c2c7bced6aa7fa96f) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0574_zpsf24888ff.jpg.html)
Just set the trap and slide the working parts back in.I drilled a small hole in the PVC so I could wire the door frame to the pipe. I thought a civet might push it out. It is a pretty tight fit and found out the wire is not neccesary so I just push it in and good to go. (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0575_zps2e57a265.jpg&hash=9676d9fe2cad754344bfc85d7598f4be39a8a421) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0575_zps2e57a265.jpg.html)
How it looks when set. Door is on the side. Pan on the bottom although you can't see it. When you make a catch just tip the trap up carefully. Remember you have a skunk in there! Then insert hose from CO2 bottle through door and crack the valve while you count to 30. Wait about 10 minutes and dump out dead civet.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0576_zps45b9e18d.jpg&hash=204d809552ca0e3a955b28def8567ceae28e846d) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0576_zps45b9e18d.jpg.html)
-
That's a brilliant design, Bruce. Are you setting a couple of those near each of your cat sets to keep the civets out?
-
No, I wait 'till the civets hit a set then set one of the traps and keep resetting 'till They stop coming. If you catch a big male often one is all there will be. If you catch a female or a little one it is usually a family and there will be multiples.
-
if scaled up a bit that'd work well on the east side skunks
they too fat for that setup - might need a 12" pipe :chuckle:
I just use water instead of CO2 but I wasn't putting up the fur that might change now though as I'm just bout all setup
-
I got over my fear of getting sprayed and watched a civet when I gave him the CO2 today. He was a big male and very active. When I stood the trap on end he held on and was sticking his nose out through the cage in the door.
I have been cracking the valve and counting to 30. The civet was unconsious today when I hit 20. I left him in for 10 minutes because I'm afraid of them coming back to life in my PU but I'm thinking now that is extra long.
-
Cool design Bruce! Congrats on the catch. I have yet to get my first anything this year! :dunno:
I am just trapping on the property, but I would think I would at least get a coon! Grats again!
-
Was just on the phone with Sunnyslopes last night and complaning about the complete lack of beaver where I am trapping. So what happens? Bring this load home today. Nobody will believe anything I say any more. :chuckle:
Even got a grouse with the trapline pistol. Pretty much a miracle as it is accurate out to about 6" :chuckle:. It's what's for dinner, tomorrow.

is that number two for otter bruce? looks like you will have another great year!!!!!!!!
-
Dang, you are doing great! I hope your shoulder heals up quick. THanks for all the pics
-
Nice!! All that fleshing with loosen that shoulder up...that is until you wake up tomorrow. :)
-
I remember the trap now. Great design but looks like a lot of work, all those round parts are not easy to fabricate. Glad I don't have civets!
-
Nice!! All that fleshing with loosen that shoulder up...that is until you wake up tomorrow. :)
Skinning has not been easy. I put some stuff in the freezer whole. I think I will regret this in the future. I had to skin the stuff last night though. Beaver and civet were Ok but the otter I had a hard time with.
Not sure about the loosening up theory but this morning was not good.
-
Sorry to hear that Bruce, I hope you feel better soon!!
-
Not a lot of traps out and been slow anyway. Then today a real event.
Fisher!
This may be the first fisher trapped in WA in 40 years. I haven't heard of anyone else getting one anyway.
Forgive the poor photography. Only one very good picture.

I missed it takeing off when the door was opened. I'm never fast enough with the camera. Ouchfoss was with me though and he videoed it. Maybe he can figure out how to post it.
No damage to the trap as you can see and it was pretty easy to release. I was worried it might be feisty as I have heard of their reputation. In fact I put a blanket over the trap for a place for it to hide when I was opening the door and it wouldn't leave until I removed the blanket.
It was smaller then my first impression. I'd say the size of a small otter and close to that shape only a lot longer fur. Black tail and gray face, pretty black body but with a trace of brown.
-
Cool! Looks like you are doing well on the critters.
-
That's really cool, Bruce! I bet certain people would like to know about this.
-
That is cool thanks for sharing

That is AWESOME! I was wondering when I'd see a fisher show up on here. Thanks for sharing very cool!

I'm just curious as to why the western spotted skunk is referred to as a civet? Thanks.
Eric
-
Just a term used...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civet_cat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civet_cat)
-
Might just be a local thing but for as long as I can remember they were called civet cats by everyone I knew. It wasn't too many years ago that I read about them and found out they were actually called the spotted skunk.
-
I'm just curious as to why the western spotted skunk is referred to as a civet?
Civet is also widely used as a common name for the Eastern Spotted Skunk. The name comes from the French civette, and refers to the yellowish anal gland secretion of certain Asian and African mammals used in making perfume. Those animals were known as civets long before American spotted skunks were discovered by European settlers. The anal gland secretion of spotted skunks is also used in making perfume, so the name civet was applied to them as well.
-
Well, it happened again. Pictures below of my second Fisher. Released it today a long way from the other on another drainage so not the same one.

I only have 6 traps left out now and will pick them up soon and move my line. Engine check light came on on my pickup today so that may put a crimp in my trapping. Getting it looked at tomorrow.
Some other stuff I caught today.

Should have put a green spray paint dot on the first one's head, maybe he's following you. :chuckle:
That's pretty cool, nice bobcat as well, and an otter? can't tell in the pick.
-
I'm enjoying reading your updates, get that truck fixed so we get to see more photos. :chuckle:
-
Have you trapped any of them in the past? Nice pics and videos. I saw one in the early 90s up Suatttle river valley.

Yes an otter, small one. Second otter at that set. Took one there 6 days ago.Have you trapped any of them in the past? Nice pics and videos. I saw one in the early 90s up Suatttle river valley.
The last fisher I have heard being trapped in WA prior to these was in the 70s on Fort Lewis. Fisher were reintroduced on the Olympic Penninsula starting in January 2008. There were 90 released over three years.
-
Bruce,
Have you notified anyone with the WDFW about the catches. I'm curious what they would have to say about it.
Doug

Doug
Nope, haven't called them.
-
One of the collared fisher is hanging out on the east satsop he traveled all the way from the peninsula area. also they are finding that mountain beaver are a favorite food...so maybe this might explain the area you are finding them
-
That last fisher you caught that doesn't look like one of your traps. Or have you changed something on your traps now? Camtrip Trap?
-
Yea, camtrip. I bought that one.
-
Fisher #2 looks larger than the first. Is that right, Bruce? Judging by the shape of the head I would guess it to be a male of at least 3-4 years. It could have been one of the fishers released a few years ago. Fisher #1 looks like a much younger male or female and may have been born on the peninsula. I'm really surprised WDFW hasn't reached out to trappers around the release area for help in monitoring the success of the reintroduction program. At the very least I would expect them to request hair samples from each captured fisher for genetic testing.
If the reintroduction program in WA is as successful as in some other states it may be possible to open a limited season on fishers in a few counties in less than 10 years. That's something to look forward to. Fishers are great furbearers and easy to trap in cages.
-
Bruce,
Did either of them have quills in them? Every fisher I have caught in wi. Had quills in them. They are the only natural predator of the porky pine that's why they were Reintroduced I to wi. In the 60's and they are everywhere there now.
-
Awesome Bruce!!!
-
I can just imagine Bruce walking up to that closed cage, looking inside and saying "are you kidding me". :chuckle:
You should have bought a mega millions ticket last night, luck seems to be following you.
-
That is awesome thanks for sharing. Hope the shoulder is feeling better

Yes #2 looked bigger and it looked older to me. As far as sex and weight I really couldn't say. You could well be right but myself having seen only two and not actually touching them I haven't a clue.
The reintroduction program is likely to take a long time. When they were planning it the idea was to introduce to the Olympics and if successful then the South Cascades. If they became well established in both areas they would talk about delisting. WDFW was not the lead agency on this. Conservation NorthWest put up some seed money but The Park Service financed most of this.
WSTA years ago tried to get WDFW to do a reintroduction but they would not put any money into it. A reintroduction in the South Cascades is probably dependent on getting some money from the Feds.
That is why I think a trapping season on them may be a long time coming. They are travelers though and if they are successful they might spread on their own. I would sure like to hear someone report one off the Penninsula. They basically spread to all corners of the Penninsula in the first year according to the telemetry so I can readily see them in the Capitol Forest soon. I think the Chehalis R is a major obstacle though so it may be awhile before they get farther south. All my own opinion.

Ha, it's not like I examined them close but no. Porkys are just about non-existant up here anyway.
I can just imagine Bruce walking up to that closed cage, looking inside and saying "are you kidding me". :chuckle:

Where's the luck in that? Maybe cool but that doesn't pay my mechanics bill which came to $1641 today.
Anyone want to calculate how many civet cats that is? :dunno:
-
Ouch! Yea isn't it right around 274 civets? Better get busy! :) :)
-
Collared one on the upper satsop. Also people see it crossing the road
-
Thanks for the post I really enjoy them.
-
tagging to follow along

Pretty good stuff  What elevation do Fisher normally live in?
-
Pretty good stuff  What elevation do Fisher normally live in?
From the telemetry they had on the collared ones it looked like any elevation. They did seem to end up along the coast and the lower river valleys but I think that is where the food is. They had some hanging in the high Olympics too.
-
No pictures.
I officially suck. I haven't been catching anything except the occasional civet. No sprung traps or anything, just nothing happening.
So just when you think things can't get worse they do. Had my first cat trap stolen today. :mgun2: :mor:
Only thing to lessen the pain it was one of the first traps I made and was pretty much a clunker. I been thinking about junking it, now I won't have to. Still makes me mad.
Unlikely spot to get it stolen too. I think they must have had a dog to find it. Stolen on Christmas I guess.
"Peace on earth good will towards men" Not so much right now.
-
NOW WE KNOW THAT AINT TRUE. JUST HAVING A DRY SPELL. ME TOO ONLY CAUGHT 1 BEAVER AND 8 RATS IN 9 DAYS. MOVING TO PRIVATE LAND THIS WEEKEND, HOPEFULLY CHANGES. ALL CAUGHT UP PUTTING UP FUR.
-
Bruce,
I hate Trap Thieves. The worst I think is that the one that took it is always another trapper. :sry:
Maybe this will make you feel better but I've been sick for a week now. I had to go out and pull my traps a few days back :bash: that didn't help me out any either just made me more sicker. I'll be back soon I hope.
JC
-
I honestly don't think it was a trapper. Used to lose a few every year but this is my first cage to walk.
-
That stinks!

This will probably be the last picture I'll post here. My father has been getting increasingly worse and takeing more of my time. I finally have decided I can't trap and take care of him both so the trapping is done. Had my sister look after him while I picked up all the traps yesterday. Well, I left a couple out that are close but after last night I think they will be gone today.

Sorry to hear that about your dad, Bruce. I understand removing the traps as it can consume so much time and family comes first.
