Is a red setter the same as an irish setter?

Nice pics.

Is a red setter the same as an irish setter?

They are registered by FDSB as Irish Setters but there is no reciprocity with AKC. In Ireland they use the name Red Setter not Irish Setter. So when the process of bringing them back into the field was started (1950's) they took on the name of Red Setter to differentiate them from the show Varity. The men involved got permission to breed some female Red (Irish) to an Orange and white English. The Irish was used to help develop the English and they tapped back into that gene pool. After breeding back to Irish for 3 generations the pups could be registered as Irish.  You'll never see these in the show ring or at an AKC trial but you will at AFTCA, NSTRA and such. Your best source of information is www.nrsftc.com (http://www.nrsftc.com). There are some nice historical articles about the process taken by a group of sportsmen to bring the Irish back into the field.

Craig, been okay on the short term disabilty that TOTALLY ruined hunting season for me,broken/dislocated fingers on my dominant hand.Tried hunting and quit that with the first recoil of the triggerguard into the splint. You can play if you'd like. It's good to get the word out on the red situation.I know folks used a  famous black and white dog in more recent times.I know a guy who used two reds and full blown red red red dogs and had a litter of 9 black dogs with tan eyebrows and 2 red ones. :yike: R.J. is training an ABSOLUTE DANDY female red right now,has several videos of her on his facebook page.

hey Craig, good to see ya here. Stormy is taking over, got a few photo's. Need one of my left fore arm, he shredded it! Love this little guy, sleep's in bed with us.

Stormy's first night home

First day outside. Only one accident in the house so far. He's doing great!

Obvious difference between him and my E. Setter's is he's not aloof, Squirt and Bodie are. By the time my e. Setter's were 8 wks old they were running off given the chance, Stormy doesn't! He doesn't care for the chicken's much though. He'll go with me to the corner of the shop and stop and wait for me!

You gonna put that avatar of Breelie on here?

Sounds like another Red owner? Your using R.J. Marquart? I knew him years ago, his dad still owned the kennel in Roy them. R.J. was still in high school. He is one of the guy's I always recommend when people ask about trainer's. Him, Dan Hoke and Mike McGinnis. haven't seen R.J. in years.

Don,

I'm like Craigs brother Larry, I've got the english side covered but my very first dog was an Irish setter in 1976 .Here's one of my pups. Proof that style can be seen early,18 months and 10 weeks there is a video of this dog on Quicksilver Kennels facebook page as well.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCN14331.JPG&hash=1be68478fe1b3494f30082e39d680e8e5c44972d) (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F560%2Fmedium%2Fcarl.jpg&hash=e0eb17e02a3e1e294d482ace6409057dca2c19b2)

Ernie; Bummer about the finger. My schedule has been so messed up I haven't even bought a hunting license this year.

Do you know anything about the breeding behind the Red R. J. is training? I guess I'll have to join the 18th century and finally sign up for Facebook. It seems you can't see anything there unless you have an account.

I bet you're referring to Mississippi Zev. He's quite important in the resurrection of the hunting instincts in the Red Setter.

Don: Great to see the pics of Stormy. Glad to hear he's settling right in.

Yup Missisippi Zev,well actually the NRSFTC claims a son of him but I have an old american field around here in a box that had a big write up on the revival of the red setter. It had a few more english names that they used. Col Ed Schnettler was mentioned in that and that's where a couple of Gregs dogs came from.Funny that Freckles is an Irish, what with all that white on her,and her bodystyle.I've seen her pedigree and it's linebred like crazy to Clancy O'ryan. She looks exactly like him.

1946 National Champion Mississippi Zev! Now you know the rest of the story.

Hey Craig. Went to the Central Ore Wirehair Club Christmas party last night. spent the night at Holly's. Wasn't sure she was gonna let me have stormy back. her boy friend even played with him. Step in the right direction! When she got him to get a dog, he showed up with a mangy lookin cattle dog! Now he's considering a pudelpointer?

That's great Don, if he doesn't come around with the right dogs and attitude toward them she should find a new guy. Reminds me of a joke that ends with "send pictures of the boat".

Tell me this little pup isn't going to challenge me every step of the way. Hope he's great when we're done.

Welcome to the site Craig and thanks for a great pup, really enjoyed you and your wifes company despite the cold..

You are more then welcome, nothing like a boy and his dog! We enjoyed you guys also but it was cold.

I heard you and Don talking about this site and thought I'd give it a try. There sure is a lot of interesting and valuable information here.

Looking forward to pictures when the camera is fixed.

We head to Randal Saturday to deliver the last two. Both go to families with two boys each. We raised two boys and that brings back memories.

Take care.
