This is an easy awnser aspen,no one unless your willing to go with backyard stuff that's overpriced by double,You could ship 2 pups here for the cost of buying one locally.Really you've got a pretty broad query out here,are you looking for blood from coverdog lines,Shooting dog lines or All age lines,Do you prefer Elhew blood,Miller blood,Rebel blood,Fiddler Blood.I'd direct your search to the south.
I'm figuring that's the answer. The concern I have is over the new puppy mill rules put in place by the USDA this Fall that essentially force a lot of breeders to get licensed if they are going to ship pups. A lot of breeders are already outright saying you must fly out to get the pup now. If that's what it comes to I will in the future. But if there are alternatives closer to home...
I don't care about blood much as long as the breeding is from proven lineage. I like Elhew but some of the healthier breedings I've seen aren't so closely bred and are a good mix of Elhew, Miller, Fiddler, and various coverdog breeding. I may ultimately go to the kennel from which those dogs came.
I really don't need a horseback dog. But I won't overlook those lines. It's easier to reel in a runner than push out a boot licker.

A lot of the Coverdog lines can be like that, which makes sense as a number of them have at least some HB dog in them. I'll probably wind up going that route when the day comes if I can't find anything I like out here.

The nice thing is well bred EP's are cheap. You could buy a pup, have it sent, and still come out money ahead. There's tons of well bred EP's down here in the South for $350-$400. Don't narrow your search either. Many of the top AA pointers are great foot hunting dogs. Gary Lester has stated many times that Snowatch is a great foot hunting dog. But break out a horse, and get ready to go like hell.
Yeah except the airlines are gonna kill you when it comes to shipping. IF you have a breeder willing to ship (a lot will run scared of the USDA rules) the freight keeps going up and up and up.
I just paid $300 to ship an 8 week old puppy. That did not include crate and Health Cert. The combining of the airlines are not going to do us any favors when it comes to shipping.
There are several very nice dogs in the PAC NW that are being bred. Not all are competition dogs.
If you are within a year of needing a dog, let me know and I will direct you to some folks with some very nice hunting dogs or/and competition/hunting dogs.

How are they proven then?
Since that likely comes off as a snobby comment, and I don't mean it that way, I should probably explain by saying one of the attractions I have to breeders who campaign dogs is it shows me their dogs can handle the pressures of training as well as the physical demands sometimes asked of when hunting. If a litter comes from parents that are proven at the extreme end I will probably have a dog that can do what I want it to and most likely be more forgiving of any training mistakes.

Elhew is suspect unless it comes directly from the elhew kennel.First name in pedigree has to have Elhew in order for it to be elhew.Lot's of folks in the last 20 years quick to jump on advertising "Elhew" trying to follow in the steps of ultimate marketeer Robert Wehle.
Ron Loomis in Kalispell (Montanabirdogs.com) has Elhew and Guardrail bloodline.

They ARE trained and they ARE hunted. Extensively.
Seeing as that is what the guy wants (a hunting dog). Would you not suggest he go and WATCH these dogs work?

Elhew,Most likely Sinbad.The body spots are indicitive of snakefoot/damascus influence as well,fibber McGee threw dogs with bodyspots as well.Bodyspots = Elhew influence, Miller pointers are almost always clear white with some very very light possible ticking on the ears.Fiddler blood dogs are almost always Black/white or liver/white. Well lets see the pedigree on the orange dog.
Don't have one but I did just call FDSB and order one. He's Fiddler/Elhew stuff. More Fiddler than Elhew.
However, I DO have a copy of my Fiddler bitch's pedigree. I'll see if I have a pic of her. One tail spot....ZERO NO TICKING or any other body spots. Almost pure white and she is linebred linebred Fiddler.
