Title: Coyote Madness Fall 08 - Winter 09
Post by: boneaddict on November 06, 2008, 08:54:38 PM
Who wants another competetion?  I was dreaming about this today while wandering around int he fog.  We joked about it earlier, but I am ready.
Here's how it works....
Since there is no money involved and its just healthy competetion, and more for fun thatn anything, I will be the sole judge and jury so if there is a problem, contact me.
It will run from Nov1 thru April 30th
Scoring will be as follows....

A coyote kill with a rifle(modern...including shotgun) is 1 point
A coyote kill with a Muzzelloader or compound bow is 5 points
A coyote killed with Trad gear (longbow, recurve, Flintlock) 10pts
A photo of a coyote that is not killed is worth 1/2 point.

Kids 14 and under and oldtimers 65 and older get double points.

A photo of the kill will be very much appreciated but at this point NOT an absolute requirement.

Teams.....
So far it is the Hunting Washington.com Pro staff(moderators/admins and family).  versus the Forum members.  You guys can form individual teams if you wish.  Let me know, such as the Moses lake lights out boys, or the Polarbear express.....Family members (first line like AK rules....brother, daughter, father etc. ) can be members of the team, specia=fically for the prostaff team, as anyone can be on other teams.  In other words Idabooner, and Lil bone or Robs daughter (his choice on WF70) can be on our team.....

Family member has to be a member on this forum in order to be part of the team.

Post a pic of your kill or your success on here and I'll keep tabs on the running score.

This is just for fun.  If no one is interested or have other modifications or input, let me know.

I am in.  I will give it a try.  I'm hopefully going to go out on Monday morning, weather permitting, and going to try and put a dog or two down.  We have rain lined up for the next few days though.  Does anyone on here call in the rain and have decent success?

Deaddog, if you see this, maybe we can team up?  I don't have too many opportunities to go out, but I try to get out once every two weeks or so from now until March.

Coyotes were moving EVERYWHERE today.  I saw more sets of tracks than deer.  Not kidding, so I'd guess that would be a yes to your question.

Sorry Grizz.  He's on my team, but you cna still go hunt with him...just let him shoot.   :chuckle:

Heck ya.    I figure ten against 2,000 isn't real bad odds at this point.

Demontang, I may need to make a trip up to my old hometown and team up with ya so we can catch up with those guys.  I have been wanting to hunt up north of Selah for quite some time.  I have a good excuse to head up that way considering my whole family still lives up there.

Bigswede, how are you ,havent heard you on here lately. getting together for dogs sounds good, sounds like a few of us over here on the dry side need to team up and put those wet side guys in their place. :chuckle: :chuckle: they already have a good jump on us, so a should be fair now :chuckle:. I think it would be an great time to maybe do a wetside hunt hosted by you wet guys and than do the same over here hosted by us dryside guys, maybe do it in two man teams, by draw one wet guy one dry guy to a team. My opps to go dogin are always on the weekend, lets see if we can get together and put a stack of dogs down to win this one first.

You guys are all on the forum team until you divide up.  Sorry pistol is considered modern, one point.  Yes you can call, beat them with a stick or anything but snares and traps.  I'm not sure if you have to wear orange now or not....I'm not even sure if I need to, but have been.  Coyotes see it by the way.  I was going to check the regs.  I think it might be for general only, not during the special permit season.  I am not sure.  I guess I was sticking to the "better safe than sorry".  Another regulation I wasn't sure about was hunting them with a crossbow.  Are those completely illegal in this state.  Doubt anyone does that, but was just thinking.  You have to do something when you are in the fog all day.  That was taken on Gold Ridge looking up into the North Fork of Gold Creek or Crater Creek.   Some big bucks in there, and was hoping one might have decided to come down.  That was the only day out of 7 that it didn't rain or wasn't fogged in.

Title: RE: Coyote Madness Fall 08 - Winter 09
Post by: boneaddict on November 08, 2008, 11:07:30 AM
Nope.
Object of this contest is kill as many frickin dogs as possible, the fewer the folks would mean more prestige.  get some young and older folks involved and did I mention kill some dawgs.
I figured it might be more fun for guys to have some teams.  The original challenge was all the mods agains the forum, but not sure how fun that would be.......

I got my coyote hunting pardners signed to the Forum(BullElk and Sagebrushstalker) and we went out today saw 10 only got 4 shooters, There was one coming in about 230 yrds or so and it looked like it was going to keep coming straight at us, it ran down to the bottom of the draw and I couldn't get my sights on it due to my bipod. It came out about 10 or 15 yrds to my right  I was busted, tried to turn my rifle to the right and it took off. We gave it a few warning shots but didn't connect. Anyway 3 coyotes down.Skinned out the top and bottom ones. The center one just didn't quite have the guard hairs yet. It was probably a 12 or 13 mile hike today and it's time for the hottub.  :chuckle: Hey do we need to post everytime or just at the end?

Good work Big10.  What happened to you today is the reason I went to shooting sticks.  The bipod just didn't give me much mobility.  It was great for propping the gun up, and I still prefer it if I am pointing the right direction, but the sticks are great for turning, running shots, and when you stand up to freehand a shot, your gun doesn't have too much weight on the front end.  Plus, with my bull barrel, bipod, and 50mm scope the rifle wanted to slide backwards off my shoulder when carrying on a sling.

Well cully and I went out on sat missed one and one down, a female that came to cullys mouth call like her ass was on fire. I barked to stop her, cully and I shot at the exact same time, sounded like 1 shot, down she goes. The best part of the day was when we called on a land owner with land posted ( hunting by writen perrmission only) at first he was hesitent to let us hunt , until we told him it was yotes we were after, then he says , well coyotes hell ya, day, night , 7 days a week, kill them all PLEASE. So we scored a couple hundred thousand acres of prime dog land. ever where we went there was dog scat every 30 feet and just an hour from home. dogs are goin to die.

Glad to see someone from the Tri-Cities is doing good, I went out today and went 0-4 on my stands.  I saw tons of fresh scat and tracks, but didn't call anything in.  I did see one coyote but it was on my way driving to my spot, it crossed the road ahead of me with his afterburners already on before I could stop.  Must have been shot at a few times by deer hunters.  I also saw a real nice mulie buck and some does.  Oh well next time I guess.

I went out this morning, First stand called in a nice sized dog using one of Rick's calls. It stopped and sat down at 208 yrds. The first round sent his way made him look behind him the 2nd round sent him packing. Bet he thought he stepped in a bees nest. Shot at a target and I was shooting 6 inches high at 200 yrds. :bash: Hmm which one of you guys was dinking with my scope? Oh well, probably going out tomorow

How many points for getting a coyote kill on video and providing a link?
Are we counting all the yotes we've taken this hunting season (starting in september) or just since the contest started?

He was barking like crazy at my dad and didn't see me :chuckle: I shot and hit it in the head but couldn't find it in all the grass and rocks :bash: I know its dead because of the red mist that came off it but I just couldn't find it, so I don't know if that one counts or not. :dunno:

FYI jdb and I are going to start a team.

Boy, I gotta remember to take the camera, Could have had possibly 5 or 6 pics of ones that we didn't shoot on Sunday,Monday or Tuesday. Tuesday the weather was so bad between the rain wind and fog we didn't call in anything but jumped two. I've seen bigger jackrabbits than one of the coyotes we saw, must have weighed maybe 8 to 10 lbs. Must have been the runt.  :chuckle:

I went out this morning and have a new long distance shot on a coyote 502yd's with my 16" barrel AR, I think he was the one we missed last week and just wouldn't come in any close so I figured what the hell and sent a 40gr hornady his way and he just dropped like a stone :IBCOOL:. The bad part is when I got to the dog and dug out my camera the battery was dead :bash: but I did kill it and I can take you to it if you want to hike in for prof. :tung:

I am adding a picture in a minute to bring us up to 12.  I couldn't get three different ones on film.  Always saw them when I was stalking deer and when they were on the vamoose.   This particular dog was nothing different.  A buck had disappeared behind a big rock formation and I was stalking closer when I saw the yote disappear in the grass.  I figured I blew my oppurtunity and about that time another buck came out from behind the rocks, displaced by the bigger buck.  I was trying to edge closer and closer and all of a sudden the two point took a dive at the brush,  the coyote which I figured wen the other way came shooting out of the brush with the two point on his tail.  The buck ran the coyote up on the rocks.   I'll get the picture on here as soon as the Mrs gets off my ASS.  Too bad I don't have a rockpile to climb up on. :chuckle:

Here is the 2 point that ran him up on the rocks.  I if I would have my lens horizontal instead of vertical I'd got them both and it would have made a cool pic.  I tried to change the lens over and the coyote took off.

Here's a nice dark male from this am. 253 lasered yards. Shot with my 204 spitting out a 32gr V-Max. And yes Bullelk I remembered this time to jack one in the chamber before I shot. Nothing worse than hearing a click when you squeeze the trigger.  :chuckle:

Sounds good. I'm new to coyote hunting. Only one season so far, but I'm hooked. I'm going on a deer scouting trip to Western Idaho around Thanksgiving. I'll be driving up from around Portland to Priest River.  I'd be interested to find where there might be good public land for coyote hunting around that area on the Washington side or anywhere else along the route.  If of course anyone want's to part with that knowledge. LOL> You can email me at sss5358@earthlink.com.

Thanks, Steve

Never mind, read the rest of the rules, laws, whatever.

Chalk up another one :)
Went out solo today as my counterparts are too good for me..lol
Only made one call because the dam fog kept me out of where I wanted to go, this female came in after about 8 minutes.  She wasn't a dumb one, once she saw me slowly moving the gun in her direction she stopped at 120yards out.  She wouldn't come any closer even with some lip squeaks, she actually started heading back down the draw away from me.  Her fatal mistake was stopping broadside at 140yards, she took off running hard at the shot, I'd thought I missed but watching her through the scope revealed otherwise.  She made it about 60yards before piling up.

Me and buddy Joel found an AWESOME area with literally tons of yotes running around!  We hunted some canyons, saw this guy and one other, then two more in another draw, and two others a long ways away...  Took a couple pokes at two that were a solid 600 yards away or more but of course we missed.  Got darn close to 'em though! lol  Its all private ground that we got permission to hunt so we'll be heading back up there after christmas break!

Also, we saw two at the head of a canyon, we went and got setup a draw over and tried callin them in...  They came to the top of the ridge, layed down and just chilled.  They had no interest in our calls whatsoever.  We tried fawn/rabbit distress, as well as some howling but they just weren't having it.  Whats the best way to hunt call shy yotes?  I know they didn't see or smell us, so we were stumped.

Michael

Kind of long winded,

SageBrushstalker and myself decided to make another attempt after yesterday's futile hunt with high winds and horizontal snow, On the way in this am we were busting snow drifts up to 2 or 3 feet high, luckily they were just dry powder and were doing okay until we hit one that was over the hood, Couldn't see where we were going and SageBrushstalker's excellent driving skills put us out in a wheatfield. :chuckle: Got back on the road and the pickup had lost the powersteering, brakes, and started overheating and losing coolant. We immediately thought the serpentine belt broke. Well it was 6 degrees out the wind was around 9 mph, no house in the immediate area and we thought Oh Shi*. After popping the hood we saw that luckily the belt just came off, but the engine compartment was packed with snow. After using a windshield scraper to get enough snow from around the crankshaft pulley and the other pulleys and idler wheels we managed to get the belt back on after reading the diagram 4 or 5 times. We put more antifreeze in the radiator and back to hunting, frozen fingers and all. Got to our calling area and the first set came up empty, 2nd set at the 9 min mark a coyote came in to my extreme right at 40 yds and I barely had time to bring the gun around and fire, a nice sized and furred coyote but was sort of pink in the belly and the tip of it's tail fur was gone, probably early stages of mange. Next couple of sets were dry. 5th set after about 20 minutes of calling I pulled out a couple of new calls (Tweety and Psycho Tweety) and tried them out  SageBrusherstalker pulled out a new Thumper call and gave a couple of squalls. I happened to look over to SageBushstalker's extreme right and a coyote was closing in fast at about 50 yards, it made a about face and headed back the way it came. We both turned to shoot it at about 100yards and somehow we both missed :dunno: :chuckle: Anyway on to the next set, about 20 minutes into the last set we're watching a couple of deer 300 yards below us and are just getting ready to get up when Sagebrushstalker sees a coyote about 600 yards coming our way. A couple of lipsqueeks and the coyote keeps coming but holds up directly below the deer. The doe stomps her feet and the coyote decides it doesn't want to play anymore and heads back, we give it a couple of warning shots just to help it on it's way. After a couple of minutes of explaining to each other why we missed it was time to move on. After about twenty yards SageBrushstalker looks back and another coyote had crested the ridge at about 400yards and was heading out the same way as the first one. We didn't think it should leave without a warning shot or two either. After collecting our brass we went another 20 yards or so and SageBrushstalker looked back again and a 3rd coyote was making it's way down the ridge, another warning shot and we headed back to the pickup.  Saw 7, called in 5 shot 1. I think the coyotes won today's encounters.

OK finally on the board. Bagged out on Bighorns2bushytails because of the wind yeasterday so I had to go today since it was so calm. 1st set I called in a triple. This one winded me at about 150 yards and when she turned I thumped her. Her buddy took off at the shot but the third sat for a second at about 200-220. I got the crosshairs on it and as soon as I did he took of. I flung a hail mary but didn't connect. Actually had a lot of action, later a loner came in behind me straight under me, I had the bipods out and couldn't get a bead and he busted me. A shotty would have been nice probably 30 yards straight down. I had several talking to me all day long but they were too far and wouldn't come. FINALLY had a great hunt. Geez, I've really sucked this year.

Bighorns, I know EXACTLY where we're going sunday. Get ready for a hike. I drug this dog about 2 miles. Bummed you couldn't come. You working stiffs got it bad.

Bighorns2bushytails and I will be a team. JJhunter had talked about joining up. Also maybe MHWASH and sagedawg. Let me know guys.

Gutpile, I am on board.  I shot one last Saturday, so that makes two for us.    I snuck him in out stubble field, he was pretty dumb.  I ended up sneaking to within 100 yards of him and dumped him while he was mousing.  Hopefully, we get some good calling days this weekend.

I was out for awhile yesterday.  I saw a coyote run over a hill as I was driving and stopped and called a little and she came back over the hill.   She sat down and I had a 180 yard shot head on.  I am real dissapionted in the Varmint Grenades, but this is the first one I have shot with them.   There is a BIG hole on the otherside of this young female.  The bullet hit the shoulder as she was sitting looking down in my direction.  She dropped and never wiggled, but a lot of damage to the hide.
Only saw one other at about a mile and would not respond to a call, but was a good day.  We have at least another foot of snow today down here.

Called in a big one from about 1000 yards. He hung up at 402. I decided to let one fly and must have shot right over him. He started running at me for a second. Dang it :bash: :bash: I need to practice my shooting.

I managed to get a shot of him at 402 before I took a crack.

there is a dead pile at the dairy i work at, and the guys have been telling me to go there during the evening 4:30-6 or so cause they have been havin alot of yoties... so tonight i was up on top of a pile of bails, nothing came in so at about 6:30 i decided it was time to go. the stack of bails was stacked in two teers i guess you would say, each teer is about 8-9ft tall. i jump off one, and off the next and walked about 50ft towards my truck, and felt a "burning" in my crotch, lol. when i got to my truck, i jump up i it, and it felt like someone stabbed me on my pelvec bone. so not only did i get burned, but im goin to the DOC's to make sure the "burning" on my CROTCH is normal... which im sure its just a pulled muscle or something.

1.5 points for the forum

Dang it was cold today, We started out in –3 deg weather and a 12mph northern wind. BullElk finally decided to contribute to the team and he ended up with 2, SageBrushstalker piled up one and all I got was cold. Here’s the coyote pics. My camera’s batteries died in the cold weather so these are phone pics. I'm headed for the hottub with some Crown Royal and NO ICE.

Boneaddict, I got out this morning. There was a yote within 25 yards. He went back into the brush and then eyeballed me from within the blackberry bushes. I had my bow but there was no good shot. I might go back out with my pistol next time. Oh well.

The weather turned into such a good day for hunting coyotes I talked myself into putting off my Christmas stuff and went out. Got my first one at a dead run at 263 lasered yards. He was almost to the top of the hil behind me and he took it in the bottom of his chest. The next one I called in and when he stopped at 78 yrds I got him right in the boiler room. The 2nd one was a dinker, They kept getting smaller so I figured if I got a 3rd one it would hard to tell from a jackrabbit so I quit and came home.
Sorry for the cutoff pic of the 1st so I included a pic of how it piled up. The 2nd one was really small but I'm claiming my point anyway. By the way how do you like my new camo top. :chuckle:  Today's gun was a .243 shooting a 65gr V-max at 3719 fps. Definitely not fur friendly by sure does the DRT.

I love the dog shooting guys good work! I've never really done any but was thinking about trying to get into it, just have always had a problem with shooting something that I'm not going to eat, or do anything with for that matter. What do all you guys do with your dogs? I agree that they need to be managed, esspecially on a year like this when deer pops are down and theres lots of snow, but I just struggle with the idea of shooting and leaving any animal. Any input?

When I shoot a coyote (not that it's happened this year) I save it for the fur while it's in season. When the fur is no good, I leave em lay. Buzzurds gotta eat too, same as the worms.

I got three coyotes on film today.  MAYBE 4 I have to check to see if one of the pics turned out as it was fast.  I'll chalk up 1.5 points for the team until I see if the other turned out.
These cows were hot on this coyotes ass.  There were three of them in this pack, and the other two came along, but the elk were onto this one.

Burr, it was cold today, -1 when my boy and I got out of the truck about 10:00 am. Made several calls before one unlucky yote happened to responded to my sorry attempt of a dying rabbit. As luck happened, I hit him in the left eye at 171 yards.  He dropped right where he was standing. Second pic is where he just dropped in his tracks.

Looks like I need to change the date on my camera.

Here's a nice male weighing in the low 30's from today, BullElk,SageBrushStalker and I went out and tried to call in a few. Only this guy came to the call. Heard a lot of howling and saw a total of 11 coyotes. One of them laid down and just watched us calling from about 630 yds. After about a half hour of that we sent a 55gr and a 65gr his way. Close but not quite.  :chuckle: Looks like they may be starting to run in packs now. Don't know if it's too early yet for them to start mating but kinda looks like the start of it.  Shot at 150 yrds with the .243 65gr Vmax. Starting to like that gun :chuckle:

no quite a bit more than a 22 mag, it is centerfire. Just a little less velocity than a 223. I am fairly good out to 300 yards( at least blow legs off :chuckle:). But it is a death ray at 200

Guys,

Here is a fresh coyote kill from today, and it is my first ever.  Shot with modern rifle (obviously). Add a point to one of the field teams on my behalf.

Very odd, to my way of thinking, but I recovered the copper jacket from my .204 dia 40gr Vmax from a point just under the hide- at the entrance wound.  The exist wound was "gaping", yet there it was, just under the hide as I skinned the animal. The range was 200 yards.

Is it really possible to strip the jacket, going in? I am kind of hoping "not", but there was no lack of penetration in the end (as there was a large exit wound).

I shot three on Friday morning.  All three were running shots 200 - 310 yards.  I knocked a 4th down at 628 yards running straight away, but he managed to get over the hill and it would have taken 30 minutes to get up and over to him (2 feet of snow).  I take my little brother and he runs the Swarovski rangefinder and gives out continuous ranges - makes it nice!

I gotta give most of the credit to that little Cooper - it handles like a dream in the field.   Yeah, that is pretty gruesome head shot.  I shot the one on the far left pretty far up on the neck-line, guess I was leading them a little too much.

She was in heat so the mating is on

Here's one from this morning, Another runner. He was going directly away from me and at 219 yrds he did a right turn and slowed to a lope, I gave him a 32gr .204 pill to swallow. Started snowing so hard I came home.
Todays gun was a EBR :chuckle: shooting a 32gr at 4160 fps. The upper is a Model 1 w/ 24 in heavy barrel. A Stag lower with Rock River parts including the NM trigger. Of course I'm wearing my lucky skull camo jacket again.

Well we wouldn't want to disappoint you Bone  :chuckle:

SageBrushStalker, BullElk and I headed out at 4:30 am.  It was –2 degrees at the first set. By the time SageBrushStalker said his toes were frozen and BullElk was shaking so hard from the cold he couldn’t shoot, and we were blowing our calls just to try to keep our lips from freezing up, SageBrushStalker spots a coyote slowly meandering along the fence line looking at the decoy trying to decide if it would taste good. It was on SageBrushStalker’s side so he's trying to set his crosshairs on it as the coyote is weaving around fenceposts and barbwire, he takes the shot at 126 yrds and piles it up with his 22-250. Next set had several barking at us like we were busted. We kept calling and one finally came up the draw to 60 yrds at about the 25 min mark. BullElk must have thought it was too easy at that range so he gave it a warning shot forcing the coyote to run straight away till it made to 109 yrds where he dumped it with his 22-250. BullElk said he planned it that way and who are we to say otherwise since we have devised the same identical plan before ourselves. Anyway the coyote hit the ground so hard it bounced. We had a couple dry sets, then on the next set BullElk calls and a coyote jumps up 70 yrds to our left and takes off. Another coyote comes in and parallels that one and turns broadside and stops, assuming it was safe by somehow knowing that it was my turn to shoot.  It turned out that it wasn’t the coyote’s best assumption that day as the .204 dropped it in it’s tracks at 269 yrds.

After 10 min's of calling, I saw this young female coming in very slowly at about 350 yards. She disappeared into a small draw at about 250 yard straight in front of me.  Two min's later I saw her head appear 75 yard straight down the barrel of my gun. 15 seconds later all I saw was fur flying in the scope.

Man talk about bad luck today. I called in 10 coyotes in 3 stands and only got a shot at one which I missed. I took my dog out with me and a coyote came to with in 5yds of me to my left and my dog got up and the yote took off running and I missed it at 200 yd broad side. I think that I need to stop shoting a gun and start taking picks :bash:

Here’s one from today. Bullelk and I went out and tried our luck even though it was a full moon and clear nights the last few days and on top of that all the snow has left. We figure we put in about 9 miles today. Thought we would have done better. I really don’t like the full moon for hunting coyotes as it seems that the coyotes are a lot harder to call.  Anyway I got this one when we busted it out about 30yrds from us and the coyote ran straight away. I put it down at 126 yrds with the .204 as it didn’t seem to want to stop running. More to come when Bullelk posts his pics.

Edit: Wanted to add that we are down in our count from last year by a fair amount. A fellow coyote hunter verified with a game biologist what we had heard by the grapevine earlier was that parvo has hit the central washington area. :'(

Will Big10 talked me into playing hookie from work today to try and lure some lazy, sun bathing yotes into good rifle range.  The first yote was a young male how showed up out of no where, 95 yards.  The second one showed up at 145 yards in the bottom of a small draw, in less then 60 seconds, must have been close to respond that fast. Big10 also harvested one, but a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Just put the smack down on one.  I was on my way home from a tiny photo shoot and some observation and there was one out in the field next to my house.  I stopped, took his pic then looked and looked for the other one.  All of a sudden there he/she was. Laying there watching me.  Well Dawg that will teach you.  Ran home grabbed the first bullet I could find, grabbed the gun that match (180 grain hornady and 30-06) went back.  He she was now at about 400 yards standing broadside.  Sorry ......BOOM.......   I guess I should have went and checked on the hide, maybe later.  Then a third popped up.  Damn, only had one bullet.  The first was now watching from about 800 yards away.....  I'll get pics up in a bit.

Here’s one from today that had it’s force field on at maximum. BullElk emptied his clip showing how he really shoots under pressure but did manage to knock it down finally at about 320 yrds on his last shell. The coyote’s force field must have taken the bullet’s KE and morphed it into instant healing properties as it tried to take off. I proceeded to show my stability under pressure and missed on the first shot then connected on the second with the coyote ending up with all fours straight up. As we proceeded to go pick up the coyote it rolled over and sat up and tried to harness it’s force field again. Fortunately BullElk shot it before it could complete it’s morphing again. After looking at the hide there were 4 shots that had connected. It was a 37 lb male the biggest yet this year. We did call in another one hoping to get it in shotgun  range for BullElk’s son for his first coyote. It decided not to play so my son took the shot at 147 yds.  It started the spin maneuver indicating a hit further back than optimal and took off, we tried to connect again when it was spinning but no one could get on it with the sagebrush in the way.  We looked for it for about an hour but no dice with the absence of snow. BullElk did mange to connect on two 350 lb hogs today with a .22 at about 2 ft, we'll be butchering them up tomorrow so don't expect any coyote pics from us that day :dunno:, Hope my trigger finger survives the bandsaw and BullElk's hand stays out of the cuber :chuckle:

Finally got a chance to go out again. It's been long enough I knew I would not be able to sit through a few calling stands, so instead I just walked around for a few hours. The first coyote was my first chance with my new .222. At the shot it dropped, and then ran off. Before I had a chance to do anything another one popped out. It was DRT. I then proceeded to trail the first. Thank goodness for the snow. This thing went about a half mile before it crossed the creek. At this point I had to get on my hands and knees to follow the trail . At one point I had to circle around a narrow spot and noticed the coyote did not come out. I had to jump the creek and get prone to look under this stump.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy126%2FMHWASH%2Fcoyotes1-19-09002.jpg&hash=9a9fc0b1163960c8b30fb5c6b5b69d2ee6863c1c)
Sure enough there she was. I had to turn my rifle sideways in order to get her in the scope.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy126%2FMHWASH%2Fcoyotes1-19-09001.jpg&hash=dba1a5db1800b0e824168e2e4fd0635af92705c2)

Before I could take a pic I had to wait for my batteries to warm up. So while I waited I went for another hike. While returning to the stump, two more coyotes showed up. The second and largest stopped for a shot.

I was hiking up notellem creek and i saw this noice 3 point with eye guards, and then i walk out a finger to look over the edge and a yote jumps out about 15 feet infront of me and i start calling at it and it runs away. I looked overthe end of the finger and there was another one runnin' down hill. You know what the crappiest part is: i didnt have a gun. :dunno: :bash: but hey now i no where a few yotes are. later that day i found a couple dens too!

BullElk and I went out today and did 13 sets, On the 8th set I called in a double using my new axis call I got from Rick.  Shot at 117 yrds on the first one facing me and 125 yrds on the 2nd running away. Only called in one more that couldn't have weighed more than 14 lbs on the last set. We let him go to grow up a little. (actually he gave us the slip).
First pic shows where they both landed(2nd one directly above the lower one about 10 yrds). I'm not going to comment on the 3 that I videoed but didn't press the record button.

Score another for Team Can't Hit Shat.

Well it was the maiden voyage for the 220 swift and it was bitter sweet. Had a yote bust me while walking to my first stand and he just sat and looked at me for 10-15 minutes he was a long ways off and my rangefinder wouldn't read it. I figured 500 and gave it a poke. Well wouldn't you know, I hit it. But not very well. It bit at it's guts and did a couple spins and took off. Snow is mostly gone so couldn't track it but where it did cross snow there was blood but not much. I did range it finally at 511. Second was the same thing. Damn thing had me pegged at 404. Took another poke and missed clean. Usually don't shoot past 350 but these two wouldn't come in and just sat looking at me. Plus I hadn't even done a set yet, I was just walking in. Either I stood up and educated them or I try a shot and educate them. Oh'well. Finally make it to the 1st set and call one in but he winded me at 313 and as soon as I got the hairs on him he bolted. Barking wouldn't stop him.  :bash:  4th set I finally called in this purdy dude. Took about 20 minutes and he came charging. He saw the decoy and just froze up. Sumbitch never did see me. I let him have it at 65 yards. Let me tell you that Swift hit him like a lightening bolt. It sure was fun to get out again. That damn storm really screwed things up down there.

Here's where I plugged it. See the little arrow dead center?

Exit wound. 36 grain Varmint grenades. Sorry if too graphic. Lots of people ask about the V-Grenade so figured I'd post. Not too bad for a 65 yard shot at 4000+.

Sorry for all the pics. Excited to finally get out again. Oh' and this is what I think of skinning these stinking dogs.  :puke:  :puke: But he had good fur. Think I'll hang him in the basement. Doubt the buyer will like the butcher job I did and he's pretty dark.

Two more for can't hit shat.

The first one may have been one of the two I missed on tuesday. It was in the exact same place but wasn't so lucky today. I put a great stalk on it and got to 319 and slammed it. Actually had to hit it 3 times though. First shot was perfect but the bullet blew up on the shoulder. It was trying to get away and the second hit it back a bit but the 3rd ended it. I love those long shots!!!  :chuckle:

Called in this guy at my second to last set. It was a beautiful thing!! I howled a bit and noticed some deer get spooked out of there beds. They were looking at something and I figured it was a yote. About a minute passed and this guy came up onto the horizon. He sat for a bit so I did some squeeks and he closed a bit then stopped. Did some more squeeks and he started coming slowly. He started to downwind me and stopped in a snow bank at 135. Done deal. I'm loving this swift!!!!!! Can you say MANGE!! Yuk.  :puke:

New to the site and love it.  :) Gutpile told me about it so I'd like to add the yote I got last sat to his group. Having a little trouble loading the pic on so if it doesn't show up, some directions would be helpful. I am computer illiterate but I know how to use my guns. I shot this brainless pup at 200yds just high of the boiler room and got him to stop again at 330 by barking at him. I got a headshot that put him down. I don't know why he stopped after he was already hit. I thought the first was a miss till I skun him. Trying to learn to tan them but this one didn't work. I salted it and stretched it, then found it split while drying. I was using a stevens 22-250.(http://C:\Users\matt\Pictures\2009-01-23 Jan 09'\Jan 09' 001.JPG)

I shot four 'yotes yesterday.  I only got pictures of two.  A buddy of mine was hunting in a coyote derby and stole my two morning coyotes before I could get a picture.  I started off the morning checking two dead cows - no coyotes!  I couldn't believe it?  I cruised back home and was going to do some calling in our canyons. but they were fogged in!  Damn it.  Jumped in the pickup and drove the the family farm.  I managed to knock two coyotes down in the seeded ground (walking sucked).   The first was running 200 yards straight away and the second was a 305 running left to right.  I missed one running straight away at 350.  After I bs'ed my buddies awhile (and they took my 'yotes), I headed back down to the river.  It had snowed about 1" and cleared up.  My brother and I spotted two coyotes on the top of the ridge and he ranged the back one at 425.  He stopped for a split second and I sent him to 'yote heaven.  The second coyote was about 1 mile down the canyon and was mousing at 416 yards.  Almost the same shot I had 1/2 hour before.  I gave him a 10" hold over, touched one off, and sent him into a 5o yard death run.  4 coyotes was not too bad for a slow, slow start.  Here are the two river dogs:

BullElk,SageBrushStalker and myself went out and logged in 19 hours hunting time this weekend. Saw 28 coyotes, 9 of them in one draw. We were busting them out like quail. Temperature ranged from 13 deg to 24 deg with a 6 to 11 mph wind and crunchy snow and really noisy. All the action was on Sat morning. SageBrushStalker did the calling on a set and a double came in. I took the first shot at 210 yrds he got the 2nd at 220 as it took off running. I had decided to tube mine out since it was a nice male prime pelt so SageBrushStalker walked over to the next draw and kicked one out. He put it down at 320 yrds. It was the ugliest dog I've seen all year.  :chuckle:

You gave dogs to your buddies to enter in their derby? I dont mean to sound like an ass and mean no offense but no wonder I never win those derbies. I been doing it all wrong :chuckle:

You don't sound like an ass at all.  To tell you the truth,  I was going to enter the derby, but the cheating has gotten so bad that it is impossible to win.  I asked if they wanted my coyotes kinda joking and they grabbed them so fast it made my head spin.   They were not the only ones, two rigs drove by my house and turned the spotlights about 1/2 mile down the road.   This was at 6 p.m. on Friday night and the derby didn't start til daylight on Saturday!  I decided right then that I would not enter.  I won with 4 dogs three years ago, but now the pot has gotten so big that it takes ten to win.  Some of the 'yotes look and smell a week old!  Four coyotes is a good day for one guy but wouldn't hold a candle in a derby.

I use the term "buddies" lightly.  How about aquaintances?

I decided not to play in them anymore either. Too much cheating makes it very tough. When guys bring in 24 dogs in 24 hours somethings fishy. Too bad they have to be that way cause it could be alot of fun. I hear they are using thermometers in the bigger derbies now, that might be ok.

My buddy and I used to participate in a tournament in Hooper several years ago, but the cheating was bad (11 dogs in 18 hours) tough to do.  To help level the playing field they started awarding the biggest male as the first place winner, the biggest female second place, smallest male 3rd, smallest female 4th and the most yotes 5th. It did help a little because the honest team still had a chance, even if they only shoot 3 yotes. I loved the derby, after hunting all night and day they had a big get together with a spaghetti feed and plenty of beer. Plus can you imagine all the stories of the days activities after a few beers.  It was great.

I went out today, it was a great day for calling, cool, clear and no wind but things just didn't happened.  I made about 6 good sets, no responses not sure what was going on.  :dunno: Did happened to stumble on this poor little guy sun bathing himself at 325 yds. Saw one shot one, could have been worst.
Title: RE: Coyote Madness Fall 08 - Winter 09

Scored two today. Maybe 3???  :bash:  :dunno:

First set I called a loner in at about 300 yards and it wouldn't close. It was skylined so I let it walk. Decided to head where it headed and stumbled on a threesome. The first saw me. The second and 3rd didn't. I popped one of them at 240 and it took off running.  :bash:  :bash: I knew I hit because it bit and whirled but took off. I did manage to find it about 100-150 away piled up in the stubble. I hit it perfect! I've NEVER seen a coyote go that far with a boiler room hit. The damage was incredible on the exit. I'm just dumbfounded. The pelt was ruined, boiler room hit and it made it that far? Weird.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F529%2Fmedium%2FP10102141.JPG&hash=bbd1e341e53b25dde373ca3ba929cb36c78e6042)

This was a hot female the male kept calling for her and I was able to howl him in. I still don't know what happened here. It was a 150 yard easy shot. I heard the report after the shot, but he ran up over a hill into a stubble field.  WTF!!! :bash:  :bash:  I circled the stubble and could not find that damn yote. So geuss it doesn't count. It was running hurt too. The only thing I can figure is that I splashed on the shoulder. If we had any snow left it would have been easy but I guess thats how it goes. Still pissed about that. I just can't figure it out.

#2 I sniped him at about 330 but couldn't get pics. Batteries died in the camera. Smallish male nothing spectacular.

I'm dog tired and a little PO'd. Gonna go take a nap.

yep. I'm not as happy with them as I was after the first dog. Think I'm gonna go back to the 52 match hollows after I shoot these up. They do the trick but I've really been blowing up these last few coyotes. They shoot VERY well, but boy howdy do they make a mess with the swift.

Chalk up two more for team Cant Hit Shat.

Howled in my first coyote today. To bad it was on the wrong side of the river. I was planning on mounting the first one I howled in.

The second one I happened upon while walking to my next set. It wa about 40 yards away and had no idea.

Nice, took the 250 out today huh?

We called in a group of 4 on our 1st and second sets. They hung at 400 yards from me though and I let them walk. My buddy never saw them on the 1st set. On the second I put him about 200 yards downwind of me but he missed a shot at one of the dogs. After that it was a bust. Started to get cold cold cold and windy. Bummer day but it was exciting to call in 4 at a time.

I played with that first group of dogs for at least 20 minutes but they just wouldn't come closer than 400 yads.  :bash:

Long shots were possible so I took the -250.  The first was the longest, and it was around 200.

Four in one stand, thats awesome. I've had that happen once and it was along time ago. Didn't shoot one then either.

Not much of a contribution, but at least it is something for the admins.  Here is a couple coyotes out at the airport this afternoon at 3:45 pm.  Not hunting, just picking up the in-laws after looking at a project at Fairchild.

There are 4 that hang out together in that area. I see them at least a couple times a week. My wife figures I'm sick cause I'm always pointing them out to her. I think she sees the look in my eye and gets jealous.

I see them on airport property so if you want to take the chance of getting caught, go ahead. I have stopped and called at them and then usually spot the missing ones. They sure don't care if you stop and look at them. I think they are just rubbing it in on me knowing I haven't nailed one by calling this year. Goin out in the morning to try and change that.

Well I finally nailed one of these pesky critters. Thanks to Eula Mae, our mule. My wife saw Eula Mae looking down at the creek where we usually see the yote's. She poked her head in the house and said "Eula Mae spotted something by the creek". I looked out and sure nuff, a young yote, now a dead yote. He was chewing on some old elk bones from my november archery hunt. 1 point for a westsider.

Got turned on to this site yesterday by Gutpile. Glad he told me about it. Man, I love droppin' the hammer on Song dogs... Here are a couple of pictures from this week's activity in the Palouse area. 1st one's with my .25-06 Sendero. Was trying out a 100 grn Sierra Match for the pelt. Hit the shoulder at 350 yds. and made about a 6" exit, dang! Second one was with the Bushmaster at 225 yds. with a 40 grn Sierra Blitzking, also for the pelt. Worked much better!

It's more about the rubber horn end on this call for me. I squeeze it when I'm calling, randomly. I try to make it sound like while this thing's screaming, something (Wile E.) is chomping down on it. I'll also sometimes finish up with a hurt pup to make it sound like the fight's on, and maybe if the coyote I'm after were to come to help out, he might get some of the snack. Not saying this is how it's done. Just saying it's how I do it right now. I'm always changing. Song dogs are SMART. If you do the same thing in the same area, you won't be calling them in, you'll be blowing them out of the area. Best of luck!

Should I? shouldn't I? Couldn't figure out if I wanted to go out again but last night decided to go for it. 1st set was dry. Second set I called in this little girl.  :dunno:  I've never seen a Whitetail come to a howl but she and her yearling fawn came running.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hunt101.com%2Fdata%2F504%2Fmedium%2FP10102182.JPG&hash=d3bc122024b6d3f72df85c02da25d499b298a921)

Was waiting for them to get a little closer but I turned around and saw this;

She was standing at 220 frozen and I zapped her. No exit this time Wile! :IBCOOL:  Really a good coat on this one so I stuck it in the weeds to pic up on the way out but the birds and something else tore into her.  :bash:

Later I saw two more at about 350 and they would not come in. I tried to stay in the shade to get closer but they saw me and bolted.   :bash: :bash:

Then later I called in THESE  :dunno:  :dunno:

Well I have been out 3 times this year and the last two times I went out I hit coyotes both times and didn't recover either one.

Today was different.  My buddy and I went out on some private land that I know of that has produced every time I have been out there.  Our first stand calling into a grape vineyard produced nothing, so we moved on to the next spot.  At our second stand we called for about ten minutes off and on when I caught movement to the left of me about 100 yards away.  It was a decent sized coyote that was trying to find the source of all the racket.  I lip squeaked and it started trotting towards me.  It stopped about 60 yards out, a little too far for my liking with my shotgun loaded with #4 buck .  I again lip squeaked and it came about 10 yards closer and stopped while staring straight at me.  It started looking around nervously like it was going to duck into the trees, so I waited for the next available moment to get my gun on him.  Luckily he had an itch so I took that opportunity to get my gun up and put the bead on him.  He turned as if he was going to take off into the trees so I decided to take a chance and let some buckshot fly.  I hit it higher than I wanted and ended up taking out a chunk of its spine.  It immediately dropped and we put it down for good with a follow-up shot from my buddys AR.  After taking pics and checking the dog out, my buddy ranged the shot at 52 yards.  Not as close as I was hoping, but I will definately take it.  We estimated the coyote to be about 25-30 pounds and 1 to 2 years old.  I need to thank Rainshadow for giving me a couple of his calls.  I used one of his howlers to call the coyote in.  For size comparisons, I am 6'2'' and 215lbs.

Lots of fog, but all in all, a good hunt. Heard them howling. Good numbers of 'em, but couldn't see beyond maybe 100 yds. on the Palouse this morning. Hit some regularly producing spots, but it just wasn't working early today with the limited visibility. Later the fog burned off, and Gutpile spots one at 1,000 ydsish. He also notices that it's looking around like there might be another. There was. Two more. We watched them for about 1,500 yds crossing in front of us, and then they bedded for the afternoon. We were on the ridgeline, so we had to back crawl to get out of sight to make our approach across the wheat stubble canyon. Some said it couldn't be done, but we snuck up on 'em and managed to catch this one on his way out, well his way out of this world thanks to a 40 Blitzking out of the trusty AR. PaTHOP!!! About 150 running quartering away offhand. Not the best hit, but as it turns out, it made the hunt. Sure does make things better when you get 'em. Thanks to Gutpile. Always good to have good company when chasing the songdogs.

I had to drop my wife off at the airport at 4:30AM today. That was the perfect set up to go hunting.  I trolled along a road before sun up, howling every mile or so but got no response.

I went back to a farm where I'd been busted by a coyote a few weeks ago. I changed my methods a bit, at the suggestion of others on this forum.  I hung a watch on my shooting sticks, and was careful not to call too much or too often. Motion was absolute minimum (well, better at least).

After 15 minutes of rabbit distress (Long Range Tweety), a 32 lb male came out of the sage and onto a dirt road I was near.  I watched him come in from about 200 yards into 100 yards (yes, it can be done). I lost sight of him as he was behind some sage, and shifted the rifle to my shoulder.  He saw the motion  and reversed course down the road.  At 200+ yards, he cut into a grassy field and paused. I put one shot into him with my .204 (a little aft, but still in the rib cage) and he went right down.  Here we are:

BullElk and I went out today and headed to the top northeast since the fur on the coyotes in our usual areas are rubbed and also losing their guard hairs. On our way to one of our spots we see one standing about 175yrds off watching us. It decided to take off before we could get a shot, I rolled it at 213yrds as it was running away at a angle left to right on the 2nd shot. When we finally got in to our first set I started calling and a chorus of coyotes starts up, we tried howling, pup distress etc. but no dice. On the next set BullElk cut loose with a call and again the coyotes started howling and barking. So he switched to howling and pup distress again but this time it sounded like they were coming closer. We waited quite a while and BullElk did a quick howl and it sounded like they were about 200yrds over a hill. Finally we spot one off to our left standing behind some sagebrush, BullElk and I start squeeking and the coyote came in further but stopped again behind some brush, one more squeek and he moves in. BullElk is trying to stop him with some barks but he keeps coming. Finally he stops at 49yrds and BullElk dumps him, Total time on that set was 38 minutes our longest this year. On the way out we see another coyote running away at about 200 yrds, I hit it on the 2nd shot at 237 yrds but not a good hit so I start tracking which wasn’t difficult in the snow and good blood. After about 7/8 of a mile of this I finally get up to about 300 yrds of it and it decides it still has plenty of steam left and takes off, not very fast but enough that I needed several shots to put it down for good, but the first 3 were off hand so they don’t count and the 2 solid hits on the sagebrush shouldn’t either or the rock. It looked like I hit it twice after skinning it.  Last shot was at approx 347 to 367 yrds by lasering from the coyote back to where I thought I had shot from. All 3 pelts were good enough to skin out.

I redeemed myself today, putting one dog down and scaring a few others.  The first shot counted, the rest were at fleeing critters that wouldn't stop at my yelps.

It was an interesting stand, at the same location where I found a pair Saturday (hitting one, but not recovering the body). My approach to the stand begins on high ground, drops into a shallow swale, then overlooks a deeper draw, that had been fenced as a feed lot.  Today there we no cattle in the feedlot.

I crept through the swale, to the point where I was sniping from the day before. I looked past the feed lot to the draw where I had see the yotes yesterday, and saw none.  I could not see the bottom of the feedlot. Not two minutes later, a pair show up in the feed lot, on the far slope, about 150 yards away!

I didn't have my rifle ready, so I  slid further behind the stack of fence posts, my cover, and readied myself.  I poked my head around the corner again, and the coyotes were not in view, having dropped lower into the feedlot. I contemplated squeaking them in closer, but I could not see their approach.  The critters would show up at about 20 yards, pretty abrupt-like.

I waited and a coyote reappeared on the slope.  I took steady aim, with coyote fever in check, and made the shot.  You can see the entry spot in the image.  It blew his heart out, I think.  There was blood everywhere inside, with apparent hemorrhaging even to the far side of the entry wound, but no exit wound. Excellent bullet performance.

After the shot, all heck broke loose, and one coyote came up the slope to me, showing up at 20 yards (and 25 mph).  I let loose a few orounds their way, but I haven't developed my technique for running shots, yet.  I am "leading them", but by too much or too little?  That 40 gr pill doesn't kick up a lot of dust (especially when the ground is frozen, as it was today).

This is a 27 lb male.  I've got it skinned, and have done a better job this time.  The task was made more difficult by the massive wound in the  lower chest. It was not a clean surface to skin to.  Very dark and bloody, and I couldn't just "wipe the blood away". It is hard to describe what I saw (and took no pictures, for my wife's sake).

The fleshing is "in progress" (chilled at the moment). I am working out my tools and methods.  I bought 25 lb of salt at Costco for $3.95, to help desiccate the hide.  My local feed store didn't have the white "feeder salt", just the mineralized stuff. Thanks to Michelle for her advice along the way.

That is a baseplate compass attached to my call lanyard. I dial in the bearing when I knock a critter down. When searching for the critter I can check the bearing back to my stand, and tell if I am on line or not.  It helps in the fairly flat, fairly shrubby terrain I hunt where longer shots seem to be my fate.

BullElk and I made another trip up north today, The calling didn’t pick up until late morning. BullElk was in hitting the mark on the coyotes. His tally was 3 coyotes down and lasered ranged at 331,394 and 76 yrds. I shot 2 coyotes lasered at 124 and 176 yards. Pretty nice day today with the weather cooperating and the coyotes were lighting up when we called. When we got to BullElks last coyote he forgot his howler where we were sitting so I walked back and got it while he started skinning it. I had never used a call like that so I started howling and doing a pup distress as BullElk was tubing the coyote out. I looked up and here was another coyote about in the same spot he shot his. That was my 124 yd shot coyote. Total count for today was 5 coyotes down, Two of them wasn't worth skinning.

I went out yesterday to my honey hole and spotted this yote at about 200yds walking along. First shot hit it in the cage but went back and took hind leg out. Dropped her there and placed another in the back of the head to finnish. I'm really happy with my reloads.(http://C:\Users\matt\Pictures\2009-03-20 march 20 2009\march 20 2009 006.JPG)

Today BullElk went by himself. Nobody else could go out and play.  :'(  He did manage to see and knock 2 down at 150 and 175 yrds without any help .  :dunno: Like he says, even a blind squirrel can find some nuts every now and then. But for BullElk I think it's more like if you fire enough rounds sooner or later you're going to score. :yike: At least he let all the air out of the front one.

The bigest one we shot and actually weighed was 37 lbs which was one of BullElk's . There was a couple more that was within a pound or so less, all males.

speaking of dogs, I was trying to set up for a fox the other night. While I was trying to hand my pack over a fence to a buddy and telling him to load his gun up in case the fox came out, I looked over my shoulder and the fox was trotting up looking at me 25 feet away.  :bash: 2 running shots missing over his back and he was gone.  His pelt was still transitioning well and I probably would have had him mounted.   :'(

Hey all,
First time on this site.  I hope you all do this again next year.  I hit the dogs hard if I can free up some time.  I generally shoot around 40-60 a year, most in the winter.  I have had a few problems with them in the past so work to keep on top of them.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FCoyotekill1.jpg&hash=ac06924a63fa1691d4d814e6056a17a707a666dd)

and two years ago, I had a walk in freezer where we kept all the "keepers".  This is winter of 07 pics...

Do you need any help "keeping on top"? I am struggling to find places with dogs.

I had a walk in freezer that was on the place when I bought it.  I sold them whole for about $15/dog depending on color etc.  Had to lay them on the floor to freeze solid before they were put on top of the pile to prevent one big block of frozen dogs.

I am kind of burned out on selling dogs.  Pain in the a$$ and time seems to be getting hard to free up.
