Title: Found a new quality muzzle brake for my latest 6.5 Grendel build.
Post by: Biggerhammer on December 07, 2013, 08:02:31 PM
I had been searching for a quality muzzle brake for my 18" Grendel build. It had to be a side port discharge brake and it had to be threaded 5/8-24. I like running 5/8-24 thread on everything. Killer Innovations has just come out with this brake, I was about to pull the trigger on a SJC Titan.

Killer Innovations had one quick UTube Video and info on their FaceBook page. Well we all know in the shooting world most often than not, you get what you pay for but I liked the looks of the KI brake and at 49.95, half the cost of the Titan I was a bit skeptical until I got the brake in hand. I wasn't the least bit disappointed, this brake is machined and finished extremely well.

It has 90 degree side discharge with the bottom being closed, the Bottom of the ports being angled up to direct muzzle blast up away from the shooter and not throw dirt and what not from the prone off a bipod.

The two top ports are machined at a angle, which is the same angle in line with the opposite bipod leg. It is one tough looking brake. I really like the counter sunk face and the fluted bottom, I've used allot of brakes and some thought and engineering went into this brake. They must have some serious equipment to produce these.

Sharp looking brake! Look forward to a field report.

I just picked up a new one as well http://precisionarmament.com/product/m41-muzzle-brake/ (http://precisionarmament.com/product/m41-muzzle-brake/) this one is going on the newest build that is in the works. They make a 6.5 as well so if it works out well I will put one on my Grendel. If not I might look to this one you are using. I like the look's of it.

No! I've never used that type of brake. Some of them blast the crap away from you. I guess it all depends on the breeze. I have several  Muscle Brakes that are closed on the bottom  and do a good job of directing the blast away and beating the spotter up a bit but every now and then  the wind is right, so me and my optics eat dirt.

:chuckle: Indeed I really love my Holland brakes that are closed on the bottom. I watched a few videos and read a few reviews then wouldn't you know it. The dang thing just showed up at my door :chuckle:

Oh and it won't spend to much time on the rifle. I bought it for hunting out of state. Most of the time something much quieter and made of titanium will be on the end of the rifle

I was actually thinking of opening one up for .338 and seeing how it did on the .338 Edge as compared to my 4 port Muscle braked. Just for the heck of it. The muscle brake is good but it's straight out the side and I still deal with a little muzzle flip. With the KI brake it's angled upwards and I may be able to keep a better sight picture through recoil. Won't know unless I try.

It will work on a big 338 but we really designed it for the .308 family and smaller.

site says .251 or .325 bore diameter how is it going to work with .338 or were you saying the design would work if it was opened up?

That was my thought, the .338 stuff. They currently only do them for .223/5.56 & .308.

Do you know what the % reduction is for that brake (braked vs unbraked recoil)?

The brake can be opened up with a piloted reamer.

snowpack, that's a tough question to answer as every rifle is different and the methodology for measuring felt recoil can be primitive.

I can say the brake allows the shooter to see his/her own hits and has significantly reduced recoil. The real treat is that the muzzle blast felt by the shooter and spotter is very small compared to other brakes.

The guys at killer-innovations produce some legit gear. The comp that I had on my coyote killer from rainier arms pounded my head way to hard. I added on of these to the Xmas list and can't wait to throw some bullets threw it.

Jay, you work at Killer Innovations? I want to buy one of these brakes for possible use on a 6.5x284 build I am going to start. I know the caliber has little recoil to begin with but I still want to put a break on it. What is the correct diameter to ream the break out to for the 6.5?

As much time as I spend there you would think so......

I have known the owners for almost a decade and they are very good friends.

I would  ream to .290

The shop number is on the website and they can take orders over the phone

Sorry to make a bit of a Necro thread, but I do not see any after shoot results on this thread and it did not seem to make sense to start a new thread and spread the info out?

A few of you were going to run them on 6.5's how did that work out?  Did you all buy the 308 version?  How did it work? :bfg:

I have a 5/8-24 threaded 6.5 and am looking for a muzzle brake, heard great things about these.  How is the muzzle blast for bystanders?

They have worked very well, they were designed for shooting from the prone. To direct the muzzle blast up and away from the shooter and spotter. Anyone to either side of that zone is going to know it, as is the case with all muzzle brakes. This one is just more driver friendly than most I have used. I have even tried it on my 6.5 Badger (6.5-.338 Ultra Magnum Improved) which it wasn't desighned for and it took quite a bit of jump and recoil out of it.

Those look pretty cool.

Similar to Lamrith's question, do you use a .308 verson for a .260?

How standard are barrel threads?  I have a stainless -06 that I had a brake put on in the 80's but was never very impressed with it and might be interested in swapping it out.

You can use the .308 on a .260 or you can ream a .223 brake to .284

Most common barrel threads are 1/2-28, 5/8-24 and some 9/16-24. It really depends on the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle.
