Was at the locale wal-mart and noticed they finally got some 25-06 ammo in. Well one box of it. I was going to pick it up but noticed it was only 100 grain. Id like to pick up some at 120 grain so I passed. But I am down to just a few rounds and am wanting to know, what kind of difference could I expect between the two? 300-400 yard is about my max comfortable shot range. Just wanna know if I should pick up the 100 grain or wait and actually pick up something else.
On a side note, the 25-06 I am speaking of is a Ruger M77 25-06. When I was checking out the few rounds I have left 2 of them were 30-06 rounds. I dont have enough knowledge to fully understand but from what I have read, its not a good idea to put a 30-06 round through a 25-06 barrel and vise versa. In my mind the 30-06 would be a touch bigger then the 25-06. If this is the case, ill make sure to remove them from whats left. Thanks

DON NOT put 30-06 round through your 25-06, bad tings will happen if you try. Don't think the would chamber but DO NOT even try! I might have a box or 2 of 120 grain cor lok's I could sell you. I will look and PM you.

Thanks Waz. Ya i didnt have any intention to do so :) I was just surprised to see the 30-06 rounds in the same belt as the 25-06 rounds. This is my brothers gun and he also has a 30-06. Am guessing a few slipped by him when he was changing out the ammos.
Normally I wouldnt of even asked but just did some research online. But when you do a search asking if you can use a 30-06 round in a 25-06 rifle, the only thing that comes back in the versa part. Using a 25-06 round in a 30-06.
So wasnt sure if it was one of those things that you are "technically" not suppose to do but people do it anyways or if no one has been dumb enough to do it. Seeing how it makes sense not to. OH and on another side note, both rounds chambered in the rifle exactly the same. Id of had no idea if I had just grabbed the gun and headed out the door. Like I was going to do last night when a pack of yotes showed up at my back fence line. Thankfully the spot light and dogs scared em off first.

Now it may be that your brother reloaded for the 25-06 and used 30-06 casings re-sized to 25-06. I do this all the time. The way to know for sure is to mike the neck of the questionable case compared to the 25-06 case. Even then be careful until absolutely sure what you have.

I really doubt a 30/06 cartridge would chamber in a 25/06. That's probably why you couldn't find a any info on it happening. The cartridges you have that are stamped 30/06 probably are 25/06.
As far as the difference in bullet weight between the 100 and 120, very little difference. The light one will start out faster but also slow down faster. The trajectories will not be significantly different.

Exactly, if there is a 25 cal bullet in the 30-06 case, you are OK. Someone just reloaded 25-06 rounds using a 30-06 case. But, be darn sure it's a 25 cal bullet before chambering.

Best not to shoot unknown reloads.
Pull the bullets, discard the powder, put in a new primer, resize, spec the case to known 25.06 dimensions and then you will know for sure if they are OK for a 25.06...
for all you know there is pistol powder in those shells...

Thanks guys for the quick answer. Already removed the rounds and put em in the safe until I get a chance to chat with my brother. But instead of messing with em, think Ill just might take Waz up on his offer. PM replied to. Will PM again tomorrow. Thanks.

:yeah: I agree--NEVER shoot someone else's reloads. I've been reloading for 40 years, and yet when friends want to buy my reloads, I put them off.... :twocents:

if you're just gonna shoot at coyotes the 100s will be just fine

:yeah:   I had a buddy go to a garage sale and buy a bunch of .270 bullets ...like 5 boxes ...he calls me up and tells me that they will not fit in his gun :dunno: all reloads .... I would never buy ammo from someone unless you know them ...especially reloads ...if they did not full length size the casing then most likely you will be strewed if they were originally fired from another gun ... :twocents:
