Title: chainsaw question
Post by: fillthefreezer on December 16, 2013, 07:55:09 AM: so i know theres a fair number of chainsaw and woodcutting guys on here and im looking for input.

so my trusty old (also see: complete pain in my ass) 044 has been giving me trouble the last few years. had to install new fuel tank and lines, and starte housing 2 year ago, last year it needed a new carb. still needs news bushings. but its been running pretty well lately, a little low on compression but ok.
saturday it seized up.
should i rebuild it or just buy a new saw. it would be nice to spend more time cutting wood than working on the saw but such big $$$ for a new one.
ive thought of grabbing one of CL, but worried i might just end up with someone elses problem child.

If you dont fall much, why not look into something along the lines of a 362. Little less money than a 461, which is what I would recommend if you want big, and it cuts like a beast. Good saws. Time to put yours to rest, you will end up chasing your tail from now on with this one. If it seized, more that likely was from a lean condition. It may have come from dirt ingestion, leading to failing seals, thus the lean condition. I would surmise that the carb was replaced to put a bandaid on the real problem of the lean running. I.E. Seals. That, and all the dirt that made it to the seals goes thru bearings to get there. Not saying this is what happened exactly to your saw, just what I see in the industry.

So, what are your needs for wood cutting and that would help steer you in the right direction of which saw to choose.

i do fall some, but buck alot more. last year i almost pulled the trigger on a remaining ms460 and i feel like i should have. the 461 is what im leaning toward now.
the carb lost the high speed jet so the saw was bogged all the time, thats why i relaced it. i have not torn it down to assess failure yet as im still too angry.
i buck alot of big rounds and im not sure the 362 would have the snot?

Sounds to me like you just need to get the 461 then. Your not gonna be happy with yourself if you've already thought about getting one, if you dont. They are slightly redesigned with a lower wrist pin for more torque. Sweet, sweet saw, and its a good investment.
