Any one having any luck out there?
-

-
Fished it when i was back for Thanksgiving. Nothing but old silvers around, nothing chrome. Might be back for christmas, I'll fish either that or the nootch
-
Maybe
Care to expand PB :chuckle:
One of my buddies is flying in from MT on saturday and another one is flying in from Idaho on friday. First time the three of us have all been able to get together in a year so were excited to wet some lines! Its the only fishery I really know of this time of year.
-
Is it just late silvers now and do they stay bright that far upriver? Aren't the steelhead a bit of a later run? I've never put much effort into fishing the Skook, but it is close enough I wouldn't mind.
-
Go fish it...

Go fish it...
That's what we're gunna do. Ill let you guys know how we do since no one else seems to know lol
-
You know the holes and how to fish it?

You know the holes and how to fish it?
not really its the first time fishing winter run fish since I moved to Montana. Ive fished it a few times when I was in high school. now I'm back so ill have to figure it out one way or another.
The skook is the only winter fishery I really know of that's some what close so we'll give it a shot.
Are steelhead usually in there this time of year or do they run later?
-
There is a larger river to the south that has been amazingly good (even though its not supposed to have any early hatchery fish anymore). Could try that. Won't be alone.

Theres been zero in the trap as of saturday if that helps ya make your mind where you wanta go..
-
Let's just say.... Fish the lower part of the river with a float and a nightmare jig. Know a guy who did quite well last weekend with that set up. There is nothing but soreback coho in the upper river.
-
Last time I fished there I vowed to never go back. Have fun!
-
:yeah: Been there twice and won't go back either. Good luck to you though.

i liked fishing down there when it was more of a local show, 10+ years ago. i could run down after school for a few hours and fish just about anywhere i wanted to. now there's 100+ guys fishing it on any given weekday during the peak of the season, and the amount of garbage is insane. i can't even get away from the crowds by walking way down in the fields any more.
i think i put in about an hour and a half between 3 trips this past year...i just can't handle that kind of pressure.

yeah i here ya.. def a popular fishery now days...... to close to the military base, look how many base stickers in the front of windows...
-
That fishery is nowhere near good enough to put up with the crowd that typically is there, combined with the "aged" quality of many of the fish.
Even years ago my partner said, "Next time we think about going to the Skookumchuck, let's just go scout for elk!"
Some guys like it. Not for me.
-
Fish it in the morning.. If nothing go to the Nisqually to try your luck there.
-
Today, I stopped by just to look. As I walked up just downstream of the hatchery I saw a little fishy sitting on the bank. He looked pretty dark. Not sure exactly what he was...
-
I live 15 minutes away from it and hardly ever fish it. I would rather drive to the lower Chehalis or Nooch. When I do fish it, it is early on and before the Tacoma and Oly crowd ( the guys who look like they just fell out of a Cabela's display) get there.
-
Hey, I resemble that comment :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

:chuckle: Look for me, I'm the big guy who looks like he just stepped off of his tractor and put hip waders on. :chuckle:

We went to the skook today. Caught some trout on the flyrod but no salmon or steelies. Didn't see any either. Had the place to ourselves and found some great holding water for when the run is a little stronger.
Going to the nisqually in the morning. Hoping to have better luck.
-
You would be much better off fishing the river that the Skook dumps into and fishing for coho, big coho at that! :twocents:

What is that, the Chehalis? Not very familiar with it. I know my dad and his buddies were doing well on it with a boat but I have no idea what the bank fishing is like.
-
Yes. There are a few spots if you look around that you can 'bank maggot" fish. I'll be one of them in a couple of days. This run wil be all done by the end of next week. Git it while you can.
-
Thanks PB we may try that tomorrow.
-
My dad is out from Michigan and we were down there yesterday. You can't judge the fishing by me because I really don't know what the hell I am doing :chuckle: But no one else seemed to be doing any better. Any help would be appreciated.
-
Didn't have much luck yesterday on the nisqually so we went back to the chuck and my buddy caught a beat up silver on the fly rod. I hooked into one briefly today. Red and black streamers slowly stripped through some slow moving holding water. I haven't seen one fresh fish yet though...

I was the guy across the river talking to you guys when you're buddy caught that fish
