Title: Eastern WA Raffle Deer Tag
Post by: Wea300mag on August 26, 2007, 07:37:05 PM
I received a Fedex envelope Saturday with the Eastern WA Deer Raffle Tag. The WDFW actually called me Thursday but I did not believe them, I thought it was one of my "friends" playing a joke on me. I'm starting to feel the pressure already of living up to last years effort. I am open to any advice, help, contacts, etc to make the best of this opportunity. Hunting season starts next Sat, I will be spending that weekend in the Desert Unit.

Thanks,

Dan

Cherish the tag, it is the opportunity of a lifetime.  SEt a reasonable and stick with it, you should have more than enough chances to get a good one, and possibly a great one.

I'm still here, just real busy. I was all tooled up to do a 3-day salmon derby this weekend and now have to re-tool to go summer hunting. If I could find away around this work thing, life would be much easier. I will be making frequent updates of my adventures this hunting season, complete with photos. You will know every time I get a flat tire, stuck in the snow, trip and roll down the mountain, or see anything worth writing about. As I mentioned before, I will be spending this weekend in the Desert Unit. I think my real hunting season starts around Thanksgiving but I don't want to pass up an opportunity to carry my rifle through unit 290 dressed in camo. I will be spending several weekends there over the next couple months then after Thanksgiving I will be concentrating on Chelan and Okanogan counties.

Thanks for all the positive comments, I will give this tag all the respect and effort it deserves.

Dan

Good luck with that tag, seems like you know some areas and got a plan. that is very good, like somebody said, set a goal, and stick to it.  Last year wasnt as easy as we thought it would be, in the thinking we would see a few more of the upper tier bucks.  Just cause you have that tag doesnt mean you have to wait till the very last day like we did haha.  Also remember you will have company the whole month of december up in the chelan county area. The auction tag gentleman loves that places and will be there.  Let me know if you need any help.

Garrett,

I followed you and your dads progress last year, in fact I was starting to sweat when you guys were running out of time. I sure hope I don't have to go through that. I will be having nightmares soon of having to shoot a small forked horn in the last hour (not that I actually would). I don't think Jim Cook has the Governors tag this year, he had it last year. As we get closer to the end of Nov, I would definitely like to pick your brain.

Dan,

Just have a ball looking at deer, and seeing what this state has to offer. i am just nervous for you up in some of the chelan county areas, they have done a great job in taking care of all those big bucks. Lots of smaller guys out there.  But there is always a pig or two around. I will keep my eye open.  Definitly hit me up, you can talk to me and my dad.  Also i think Jim did buy it again, atleast thats what i heard earlier.  he has had it like the last 4 years i think.  Maybe he took a year off :)  anyways, talk with you soon. have fun this weekend. Just kill a monster Sept. 1st, then you wont have to put your self threw all the pain haha

Spent some time in the Desert Unit this weekend. It was a little different than I expected, lots more cover and lots of area. Went in off of Dodson road and followed the Winchester Wasteway for several miles. Lots of dove shooting going on close to access road but the further I made it from the dove hunters the more deer I saw. Saw a few smaller bucks but nothing even close to big enough to shoot. Whoever told me not to ride my mountain bike, I thank you. The ground was way too soft, it would have been brutal. I did not get close enough to get any good pictures, that and I had too many tools attached to my neck (camera, binocs, pack, gun, etc) for quick access. I need to find a better camera holder to free up some space. I will probably go back in a couple weeks when the youth hunters go in, if any of you are out there let me know I don't mind helping your parents bird dog for you.

To be honest, I haven't been hunting since my last post on this subject. Here is my plan as of today though. I am going to the Desert Unit on Oct 27/28 and again on Nov 3/4. I'm off to Montana Nov 9-25. I am hoping that 50CalJim and I can harvest our animals by Nov 21 so I can come back here and spend 4 days during the prime rut in the Desert Unit. Dec 1-2 I will be combing Okanogan and Chelan Counties. Finally, I have from Dec 7 until the end of the year off from work to complete my mission. I have been saving vacation time just in case I needed it for a special occasion. On Jan. 2, my 4 weeks of vacation will be whittled down to 2 hours. It will be time well spent though.

It's almost like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Game warden see you hauling some monster mulie out in late Nov and is thinking "I'm gonna make Sergeant on this bust!!"  Then, you whip out the Golden Ticket.  bwwaaahahahahaha

It's like the contests we all entered on the back of cereal boxes.  It's not really possible that someone could win, is it?? :dunno:

Well I've been out scouting the last couple weekends in the Desert Unit and The Methow. Lots of deer in the Desert Unit, mostly does and dink bucks. Met a permit hunter at one of the access areas on Sat. We walked in the first 1/2 mile together and two minutes after we split up I peaked my head over a dune and discovered a group of 7 deer with a decent (20") 4x4. I managed to get the permit hunters attention with some arm waving and let him know about the deer. We put the sneak on them and got within 200 yards. He was going to take the buck but it jumped over the next dune before he could settle down enough to take the shot. I went on my way again and found deer over every dune. I found one good 4x6 nontypical buck, it was about 26", real heavy on the 6 side and real weak on the 4 side. He was too far for my POS camera. I attached a couple desert photos from the top of my favorite dune and a pic of a decent buck found in the Methow on the way home. I thought I took a pic of a dink 3 pt sniffing a doe from up close but ... Once again my camera is a POS. My new Panasonic FZ-18 will arrive this week so my pics will be much improved from now on. It's off to MT for two weeks after I slog through this work week, then back to get serious about the Raffle Tag.

Huntnphool, thanks for the assistance offer, I will keep in touch.

wastickslinger, the big boys must be hiding, I seen lots of horney little bucks trailing the does. I watched a group of 4 does and one weak 4x3 pass by, and every couple minutes a buck or two would trace their same path.

Post by: wastickslinger on November 05, 2007, 07:58:11 AM
Them big suckers hide very well out there. You would think that with it being a draw unit only that you would see the big bucks all the time. It atually would is a fairly difficult unit to hunt for the real big bucks. Those big bucks have some sneaky spots to hide. They should be out following does here ina few weeks. I usually start going out there to look around in Mid-November. I will let you know what I am seeing.

No problem. I figured you seeing that buck would keep your finger off the trigger for a few more weeks.  ;) I will be focusing on my late archery in teanaway through the first couple days in December. After that it will be day after day in the desert taking pictures, watching where the big boys are hanging out to snipe a few sheds and smoke a yoter or two. I will keep you posted and try to help you out if I can. When are you coming this way next?

I spent a little time out in the woods this weekend. I'm hoping for 2-3 feet of snow in the next week or two. As long as I can drive over to E WA on the North Cascades Hwy it's not a good sign. I did find a few bucks who stopped and let me take their picture. There were several others that didn't want their pic taken. I saw a 3pt chasing two does through Winthrop, the tourists were highly amused.

I'd like to see this guy in about 3 years. He looked like a young deer.

I'm not sure what this guy was doing in my mule deer area.

Keep taking pics, and shoot him on Dec 31 please.  Its more fun for us.  I haven't seen much worth your while yet.  Well, maybe I shouldn't say that, I've seen some good bucks, but I would hold out for something like Slider posted on here while you were gone.  That thing was incredible.  The Methow is going to bomb for you unless some of this whitestuff hits the ground.  I was up to about 6,000 feet this weekend to get a Christmas tree.  THATS a bad sign.  That last buck from the Desert would get that tag notched if it was in my pocket.  WHAT are YOUR expecctations anyway.  Did you say 170 or bust, r wht are you after.  Sort of your minimal goal.  Woud ou have tagged that 28 incher I posted?  Buck seried IV I think.

I realize the entertainment factor but I will have ulcers if I have to wait until Dec 31. Garrett and his dad provided plenty of suspense last year. I would definitely let the air out of the Desert buck that wastickslinger posted. I'm not the best at field scoring bucks. I'm just looking for the right combination of spread, mass, and tine length. I haven't seen the pic of the 28 incher. I will have to find it.

i will try to take some of him on the wall alone and with our other big boys from the last couple of years.  just thinking, since 2002 between dad and i with our late tags, we have killed just under 600 inches of bone here in WA.  Then if i add on a couple of my last two general season deer, we would be close between 850 -900. not to bad in 5 years.

I'm liking the snow. I had planned on being in the Entiat unit this weekend but the kids rearranged my schedule for me (it freed me up for the rest of the month though). With all the storms, it may have been best to wait it out this weekend anyway. My hunting partner (50CalJim) spent some time over there, he will have to chime in on what he saw. I don't think he has a camera with him though  :dunno:.

I did find a pic of what I'm shooting for though, hey a man can dream can't he.

Yeah I hit the Entiat yesterday on my way home, It was pretty uneventful actually because all I saw were does & Archery guys road hunting. But before that I went up around Grouse Mtn area & there were deer running around everywhere. I saw about about 35 deer with about 8 of them being bucks nothing real big though. On the scary side of things I came damn close to losing my truck over the side of the hill.I ended up doing about a 30 pt turn on a slooped corner to save it, Not fun. You better hope your snowmobile buddy comes through for you because your Exploder ain't going to make it up the Entiat in the second half of December in my opinion.

bottom of crum when i was checking on the orchard, there was still 7 or more inches of snow, and thats with it being rained on all day.  If was very slick.  Not much down low as to what your looking for.  Last year the big push of deer wasnt until the middle of December.  And even then there was only a hand ful of deer that would gross over 180, and thats a small handful.  Be careful out there, and my advice, dont wait till the last minute, if you see a 180 class buck it might be the year to shoot him instead of looking for a 190 net buck.  just my two cents from a guy that hunted up there 54 days straight, give or take a couple.

Bone- offically he was 31 4/8 inches wide, and went 204 4/8 B&C

I was over in the chiwawa and swakane bowhunting the last two days. Lots of snow but the last two days it has melted a bunch and has settled to where a guy can get through it and the roads are better today. Hate to be there when it freezes though, crunchy and slick! My buddy had a chiwawa tag and we were with him one day and saw one buck that was a solid 170-180 heavy and long tines but only 26 or so wide. Lots of descent bucks not shooters for you though and they were all up high belly deep in snow and with it warming up I would say they will stay up there. We were in swakane canyon today and saw lots of does and small bucks  but no high country bucks where we were. Good luck and take chains for all four tires!  Scott

As said above there's a lot of deer to be found down low right now, and you may find a monster but most of the big guys are still up high...  I'll be out there in about a week looking for big bucks just for the heck of it... PM me your phone number and if I find something I'll give ya a shout!

The highlight of the trip had nothing to do with hunting. I had just returned to my rig for some lunch after a couple hour walk, grabbed some chicken from the ice chest, when a gal (jogging) with two dogs came around the corner of a semi remote road. The dogs wanted some of my chicken so they ran right to me and started pawing all over me. The gal ran up and appologized for the dogs, we chit chatted for a few minutes, and they went on their way. I finished my lunch, jumped into the car, and proceeded to my next location. As I rounded the second corner, there was the gal on the side of the road relieving herself. She didn't hear me coming for several seconds, but when she did the running tights came up quick and she went through about 15 shades of red. Of course I drove by like I didn't see anything. I had my camera next to me but didn't have the nerve.

Back to the hunt, the muley rut is over and the bucks are back in hiding. The biggest buck I saw was a 22-23" 3 pt. The whiteys are still rutting. This guy couldn't find enough of his own kind so he was hanging with the muleys.

Here is a roadblock (Methow Style)

I saw 7 flock of turkeys

Here are a couple other pics.

I have started leaving the camera in the pack (time to hunt seriously) or I would have some more buck pics.

my friend had the late archery entiat tag and shot a 180" buck. I believe it was around oklahoma gultch?

deerslyer,

Can you get pics of the 180" buck? I am not good at judging rack scores so it would help me a bunch. Not only that, there are probably lots of people on here who would like to see a 180" buck pic.

I would love to see this 180 archery buck.  Congrats to him.  He might be the only person that shot a 180 buck out the Entiat this year. sadly not really joking.  Hope your having fun looking for the buck you want.  Enjoy it and try not to stress out.

You know how to get a hold of me if you need help finding the big boys and judging the racks.

You're spot on Garrett.  There aren't very many 180 bucks anywhere.  Not that there ever is, but this year is REALLY a dry year for them.  I feel VERY fortunate for the deer I took.  Dang Wea300mag, I bet its fun having the woods "to yourself" excluding woman joggers of course.  That tag would be a blast to have.  First antlers are going to start hitting the ground here shortly.  I wish you luck.

Well, I have reached the beginning of the end. Tomorrow I leave for the Eastside and will not return until after dark on Dec. 31 or I find a deer fitting for this tag. It's not a bad gig, I'm getting paid to hunt for the next 18 days.

50Cal has been hunting with me before. :chuckle: Yes, I drive a green Ford Explorer, eat a lot of chicken, and am partial to BV & coke :chuckle:

My original plan was to go straight to the Entiat unit but with all the snow in process I decided wait for the storms and socked in clouds to get by and go to the Desert until Sun. Spent dawn to dusk out in the sage, saw approx 150 deer, one huge beast that unfortunately has regressed in the horn catagory, 28ish" wide, but not much for tines. HUGE BODY!!! They need to thin more of the does out of here. To keep the wind correct I end up chasing herds of 15 does for a mile before they bail off and not scare everything else away. I found a nice 4 pt shed for you Miles, it's last years model. I forgot my camera cable :bash: Maybe 50Cal will bring it to me he comes to help over Christmas. :dunno:

When I get up to the Entiat/Methow, I will be living in the Apple Inn in Chelan, I have a wall tent but decided that an 18 day camp this time of year would be too much. Not only that, this internet thing would be much more difficult.

Bone: First you ask me to wait til Dec 31 now you're putting pressure on me, what gives? This is a marathon not a sprint. :chuckle:

Garrett: I'm not sure if my snowmobile guy will be able to get out or not now. I'm not against going for a few hour walk before daylight to get where I need to go though.

Thanks for the snow update Garrett.

For those of you who are concerned with my progress let me share some research info with you on when past raffle and governor tags were filled. My goal is to be home for Christmas but I am prepared to go the distance.

Raffle:
2004-Dec. 29
2005-Dec. 20
2006-Dec. 31 most people know this story, I do not want to relive this.

Governor:
2004-Dec 22 (Jim Cook)
2005-I heard the guy didn't hunt
2006-Ate his tag (Jim Cook), his 2004 buck was too hard to beat.

In the Entiat now, but the story is still the same. Lots of does and 2-3pts. I am getting very fast at chaining up the snowcat (Explorer) though. There were times I was clearing snow between the ruts. Not as much clearance as the trucks who were up the roads before me. Too much more snow and my walks will get longer or I'll need to go lower. I've been seeing lots of coyotes too, they are lucky I am deer hunting. Tomorrow will be another day somewhere up high in the Entiat.

300 -

Truly hope you are enjoying yourself!  Plenty of time, yet - glad to hear you've got it under control.  Give me a call at work (ext 5339) or at home, maybe we can work something out.  No guarantees, but I might be able to wiggle away for a few days.  Maybe we can trade rigs if you think that'll help.

Also, remember Byron is in Chelan and has some contacts that might be able to kick in.  I'll call him and let him know the situation.  He knows you have the tag but isn't up on where you're at right now with it.

Keep your powder dry and shoot straight.

I  see from another thread that competition is coming. I better hurry up with my lunch and get back at it.

Hunted the north shore of Chelan this morning. Deer were at the tops, but fog/clouds came in and shut me down. I'm going to chain up sooner now, stopped on hill to view some deer and slid backwards out of control; luckily just back down the road to a flat.

It snowed most of the day, visibility was limited, but I pushed onward and up the mountain. Hiked back in a ways today, on a summer day it would be no problem but in knee deep snow it was a workout.  I finally got to see one of the big boys today, my trigger finger was real twitchy. Got within 75 yards of the tall heavy dark big guy, had the scope caps up and crosshairs on the target only to find it was a 2x4. He and another buck didn't know I was there so I took at least a dozen photos of them. I wanted him to turn his head so I gave him a grunt, he turned but the whole hillside below me errupted. I quit counting at 35 head. Small 4's, lots of 2's and 3's, and dozens of does. Took lots of pics. I'm not sure how they all fit in the small area I couldn't see. :dunno: Total count for the day was over 150 seen, but only the one good one. I made it back to the Explorer to find in buried in snow, had to dig it out.

Hunting Cowboy, I was up the Mud Creek Rd, followed the Palmich Canyon ridge (north side) back and over the pass looking down to Steilko. Tomorrow I'm going to find an easier hunt. I may go survey the Mission area.

Huntnphool, I was safe, I had a shovel to dig the rig out. :chuckle:

Dan, are you baiting me here...haha, Today was a very exciting day to say the lest.  Lets see we meet this morning in the dark, dropped my truck off and me and my buddie jumped in to the snowcat with Dan and headed up to our first spot. Saw deer as soon as the sun started to rise.  new deer moving in on the hillsides.  Got to a place to throw the chains on and my buddie comes around the back and goes do you hear that...with the look on his face and i go now what.... so to start off the morning after seeing deer really quick, we got to change a flat haha. but a good way to put the chains on. But i wouldnt recommend doing it like that for all four.  So back to the deer day. we slowly made our way up the valley, up a road to get on top and do some glassing, a lot of glassing. I am sure Dan never wants to glass again.  Seeing small groups of deer scattered. small bucks and such, glassing a huge bowl and canyon, no deer at first then a lone nice 3 point shows up. we continued on our way to the top, glassed some more of where i thought a shooter may be hiding, more does and a couple small bucks. With one nice 22-24 inch heavy 3x4. also saw i think 3 maybe four coyotes in this area.  So no big guys, so we pull out of there, head down, and then back up another area to get up really high, we put the snowcat to its limit and Dan on how far he wanted to push it haha, found where the deer werent and also the elevation they were liking.  again a few more deer, does and small bucks.  I personally am very frustrated at this point. There just isnt very many deer out there. worse than last year as i can see it.  So we head out of this area and over to another in the same general area. kind of more on the elevation we liked.  making our way, lots of fresh sign, and bam there he is with two little guys.  i can see him with my naked eyes, nice buck, walking side hill, then heading up, stops a couple times and looks at us, and then over the hill with his boys. Dan likes him, or so he says he does.  I know i like him.  especially for this year, and him wanting to maybe make it home for Xmas. But a really nice deer, so we are get around and all three of us make a move, hike through the snow, over a couple little finger ridges above the big timbered bowl, and my buddie elects to go around and try to push em up or see where they are at, while we make it down this small ridge.  Well it worked perfect, all of a sudden i see one of the little guys, then the other little guy, but no big boy, crap where is he, did he just try to circle us!!! I was looking for him to do that, look back at Dan, he is looking down, then i look back and i am about 15 yards max from him!!!!! This buck is a super long tined, 26-27 inch 4x4. With eyeguards. not heavy in mass but decent. And with the long sweeping main beams and huge fronts i put him right in the 180 range. i get try to get Dan's attention who is probably 50 yards from the buck, and the buck must have gone "oh *censored*" and bailed down, and then stopped again at about 150 yards broadside.  my inner self yelling really nice buck, really big buck!!! shoot please shoot, maybe please shoot!!! and then Dan............ (Dan its all you man, you can finish the story, i mean it is your story, i will add some more to it if i need to :))  also add detail to the above if you like.

Wow, great recap Garrett, until the end...

When we saw the two little bucks and the decent buck (24-25", 4 x 4, good mass, tall), I was excited. I wanted to see it closer. We did the perfect 3-man stock (Ryan did the perfect push), I just wish Garrett had a camera instead of the spotting scope. We worked our way out to a knob, both of us knowing we have them cut off. The little guys pop out a ways away, we are both on high alert now. All of the sudden I hear a very quiet whistle, I looked and saw what I thought was the buck we seen from the road was about ready to walk right into Garrett, but I was really confused, the horns looked thinner. The buck busted over the hill and popped up 150ish yards away with 4 other bucks, all on the move. The 3 bucks turned into 5 bucks. What we had was the original 24" seen from the road along with a wide 27" that they picked up in the timber along with another buck. All I could see from my vantage point at 50 yards was a side view of a thinner horned 4 pt, not knowing it was 27" wide.

No powder was burned, the hunt continues. . . . .

Dan, good recap.  I had to do a little teasing to all the guys on here haha.  It was a great day, todays total turned out good. lots of deer, and a good bunch of bucks. With this last stalked being awesome.  Its a good day when you can pass on the couple bucks Dan passed on today.  Although i was ready and willing to get bloody. :)  But long hard day, no breaks really. I feel good, and i hope you, Dan, dont have dreams tonight....of the "Nightmare Buck"

Good luck tomarrow, keep me posted, give me a call if you need anything.

When in doubt don't shoot...always but especially with this tag...you have plenty of time, no other hunting pressure, and only the entire Mule Deer regular guy waiting on you.  Tough year but a 180 or more is out there....or even a super heavy high 170's,  or even a 200 if those in the know will let you in on it.  Good luck and don't give in to those morning thoughts of a couple more hours sleep.

50Cal showed up yesterday evening to join the cause. We hit it early and stayed til late. First light came and on our way to our destination we ran into a huge 3pt running with a monster 2-pt. Some excellent genes there. He dropped me off to do a walk into some uncharted areas hoping to find "the one". Many deer later I met him back at the road about 11ish. We mostly glassed for the next few hours until we decided to go see a new area. A couple miles into the new area we planted the rig in a snow drift. Not wanting to deal with it right away we walked around to the next overlook to find a herd of 9 deer with another huge 3pt. There must have been a doe that went back into estrus because he and another buck were acting rutty. We went back to the rig, dug it out, turned around, and headed for the barn.

10 days left. . . . .

Sorry Lemondog, you will have to put up with more posts.

Slider, yes today was cold but very clear and not near the wind as yesterday. Much more enjoyable standing out on a ridge. Did you leave the camera in the rig all night in the cold? Keep posting pics of the big bucks, it gives me incentive.

OK, I know one of you fellas out there has a buck spotted worthy of the WA raffle tag! Lets give him a tip or two. I think it is a pretty tough year to tag a top end deer around here. You never know when your going to be the tag holder and you need the help. Besides, its driving me crazy! I need to see someone put a good one down! H! HA! Good luck today Dan.

I'd shoot slider's 40 incher.  He may not score the best, but it is an impressive rack.  I've had my grandpa's which is an exact 3 point clone and is 39.5" wide and it is an impressive rack, despite only scoring about 170 or so.  It's just unique.  Cood luck to you over there.

Problem with the buck Slider posted is I think it's on private land.  Same with the other buck that some one else posted up that has the trash on one side.

It's snowing hard here in Cashmere today.  I tried to go look this morning for a few bucks I have heard rumors of but visibilty is terrible.  Can barely see across the street right now!

Your right though, someone reading this knows where a nice buck is.  I like the way 300 is doing it though.  He's treating this tag like what it is and I admire the hell out of that.

Hang in there!  Look what patience did for Garrett's dad last year.

Lowedogs right. Most of the BIG Bucks are on private land. Keep looking they are out there. I'll start looking for you the day after Christmas if you don't connect by then.
And to answer your question 300 I keep the camera in the house.I just changed batteries a couple days earlier and I thought I had spares in the truck. Well the batteries crapped and no spares. :bash: And of course today I have new batteries and spares and don't see any GOOD Bucks. :bash: Oh well If you need help let me know!!! Good Luck

Well, govenors out of the way, so now its all you bud.  That ought to take a few dozen spotters out of the woods.  He looks like the one that was on here earlier. I was going to see.  I'll be out in the woods again tomorrow.  I've seen two that you might like, though I only got crappy pics of one and I wanted to confirm.  He looks similiar to the gov tag buck and he is running with a thirty inch 4 with decent mass.  Probably about 185.  If you want the coordinates I'll pm them to you.  If not, I'll try to confirm tomorrow, depending on the family situation. ;)  The *censored*ty pics of the non-typ should be around shortly.  I was using the 35 mm with a spottingscope attachment as to not disturb them for you.

50Cal typed in an update but lost it in cyberspace so I'm going to recap.

OK, here we go. 50Cal and I decided to divide and conquer today. I went and hunted the Gardner and Alta units while he combed the Entiat honey holes. 50Cal says he ate jerky and took a nap until it cleared up at noon. He went to his upriver buddies secret spot and saw a herd of 30 deer with a lot of bucks. The biggest being a 5 x 6, 25" wide, very tall, and good mass. He called me, I said no, not at this time. He saw over a 100 deer after it finally cleared up.

I did not sleep and eat jerky until noon. I went for a 3 hour walk in a blinding snowstorm. Ran into a herd of deer right away, the lead doe hissed and stomped her foot at me. At 30 yards I explained to her that if she would bring her 30" grandpa to me I would not harass them anymore. She just hissed and stomped again. I kept walking and seeing more deer but they were pretty hunkered down. When I returned to my rig there was a truck with hounds coming up the road, they looked at my pathetic Explorer and said "are you stuck", I said no, this is the snowcat and it will paw its way out of that snowbank. We compared notes, they wanted info on cat tracks and I wanted info on big bucks. They saw a 22" 4pt earlier in the day, I saw no cat tracks. The two guys kept staring at my head like there was something wrong, but I paid no attention. I went to get in my rig and removed my hat to find 3" of snow on the bill.

On my way down the valley I stopped to use one of the fishermans restrooms along the river, stepped out, and seen a big buck on top of the hill on the other side of the river. I grabbed my binocs, it was a solid 4x4 about 23-24" wide, good mass, and height.

Tomorrow is a new day to be spent in the Entiat.

Sorry for the short update, I'm just getting a little disgrutled. We took 50Cal's Dodge to the top of Oklahoma where he saw the 5x6 yesterday. We chained up in the dark and everything was looking good, we get close to the top and here come the clouds and snow. Total whiteout, can't see jack. We make it to our destination and try to sit it out. An hour later it's still all white so we get out of the truck and hit it anyway. After a couple hour walk in the storm we return to the truck. I'm starting to remember certain deer and have started naming them. Many of the deer you could only see their heads as they were hunkered down and totally covered with snow, several inches deep (I took some great pics of just heads peaking out of the snow). From here we went for a drive near the houses at the top of Oklahoma. About half way down one skid road, a monster dark horned buck with great mass and tines (well outside the ears) jumped up out of its bed 50 yds from the road. My heart rate went from 60 to 160 instantly, but returned to 60 just as fast when I saw it was a 3pt. It was perfectly symmetric, a very nice buck. I may or may not have a pic of him as I had to dig the camera out and the buck ran away at mock 30. The rest of the day was spent looking at the normal smaller deer hunkered down as we dropped down to Mud and then out to Navarre.

Thanks for the info duckfvr.

I'll be in touch Garrett.

Bone, tell her you will bring her some salmon and dungeness crab in August if she lets you out. :chuckle:

You should get better weather tomorrow, according to the forecast.  Visibility should be much better than a whiteout!

Hopefully, with the last few days of snow and the storm today, the deer make hay tomorrow and give you a chance.

Hey Gray Brow this is 50 Cal Jim on 300's putor again here in Chelan. Yea Dans " snowcat" is pretty much grounded but we've been abusing my truck & he doesn't seem to mind much. Ya know you always hear people doing the Dodge, Ford, Chevy talk & I normally couldn't care less but I gotta brag about my Dodge Ram Diesel. The snow has really started to pile up here in the last couple days & I've been takin the old Ram were I got no business going but hey were going for broke & we'll worry about getting out later. But with 4 chains & a winch we've made it out of every hell hole that I've entered so far, I kinda hinted to Dan about 20 times today he better get some damn sleds up here because we're wasting to much time driving in 4 low granny & it's just not very efficent use of time. On a final note we ran into the couple that live in a log house on top of Okie Gulch & so we stared *censored*tin  with them & they seemed to be pretty cool  & the guy said the # were down but there was a mister big come thru a couple days ago so were going to hunt really hard tomorrow & see what happens & then I'm homeward bound & poor Dan is on his lonesome.  :'( Merry Christmas to all.

Just going back to the Dick Mesa topic. There is some nice deer in that area and it not all private. The top is but there is lots of area in the ridges running towards the Entiat river. Garrett Knows the area pretty well and seems to find nice bucks in there every year.    You will know the private land when you see it. Lots of signs and a three foot trench cut thru a field and a gate that could stop a tank.

Christmas Eve Update:

Today began like most days, I get up, throw on the wool pants, grab all the hunting gear, drive to the happy hunting grounds, and install chains just before daylight (I'm starting to know what Bill Murray felt like in groundhog day). Weather was clear and everything looked good. 50Cal and I plow up to the top to find very high winds, snow drifting everywhere. The deer numbers up high were way down today. I walk out into a known area for holding lots of deer to find two small bucks and a dozen does. 50Cal goes to his favorite scoping area and finds very few deer. I walk out to the truck about 11ish and we drive out a skid road where we have seen many good deer before. The wind is starting to blow harder and harder. We walk out a few finger ridges to do some spotting but can barely see due to blowing snow and the wind speed picks up even more. After about an hour of spotting we return to the rig to move to lower ground out of the wind. About half way out of the skid road we see a very ugly site. The wind had blown in 2-3ft of snow over a 100 yard section of our road. I start shoveling and 50Cal attaches the winch cable to a stump up the road. Three winch settings, one thrown chain, some off road crazy driving by 50Cal, and an hour later we are free and clear. I wish I would have made a video of the last minute of the this process, I have never seen someone put a vehicle through what 50Cal did. We move to lower ground and there are deer everywhere but no shooters. A small four, couple of nice threes, lots of smaller bucks and does. Overall the day was very entertaining.

Tomorrow, while all of you are sitting around eating great meals and getting fat and sassy, I will be climbing a mountain, hunting for a trophy mule deer.

Huntnphool, I appreciate your support.

UBA, thanks for the info.

Merry Christmas to all...

Geez, 50Cal,  from yours and 300's last post, sounds like you've been soundly thrashing yer rig and knees for the cause.  Knowing you, I wouldn't expect anything less.  Still, I'm awefully glad you were able to free up some time to help Dano out.  Meanwhile, gutless wonders like me sit and read about it while you went.  You got a spot in my camp any time.

300 -

What can I or anyone else tell you that you don't already know?  You are the man on the ground and my money is on you to punch the tag with a hog.  You've rightfully held off the trigger so far and continue bashing away and that's all there is to do until it happens.  Garrett's right, you keep on doing your thing and it will happen.  Don't get disheartened and don't fall into the trap of over-thinking it.

Our thoughts and encouragement are with you.  Hopefully this note finds you in fine spirits this Christmas eve and tomorrow brings you the best present ever.  Just know that whatever happens, the real gift has been the opportunity to cavort around the country as a free man hunting a buck without the normal artificial WDFW restraints and all that foofaraw.  Hell, Dan, you're a modern day mountain man!

Keep the faith.  Downing this wall-hanger is right in your wheelhouse.

Merry Christmas!

Man this is tough, I want to be up there giving you a hand and there is no way I can at this time.....You got to hang in there as long as you can. "He" is there.  Beau Patterson the former biologist for that unit has told me " the big ones are rarely easy, they have been hunted up here for 50 years and have been bred into secrecy" I would be sure I was looking in every tiny seculed pocket and every little patch of timber you can. Its really tough what you are doing, even if we drew the tag most of us could not get the time you have to do it right. We are all right there with you and pulling hard!!! Merry  Christmas and goood luck!

Christmas Day,

Today was almost like a day off; I went for a couple hour hike in the morning then drove around some lower country glassing. No chains today. It was a good day for seeing deer, lots of them, but once again, not “the one”. During my first drive after the hike, I saw a perfect 4x4, 23-24”, with good mass and tines. This may come back to haunt me like the deer we found when Garrett, Ryan and I were out. It was about 200 yards away, UPHILL. I would have had it back to the rig, whole, in a matter of minutes. I made it back to the motel early today (2ish) to regroup and recharge my internal batteries.

Not sure where I’m going tomorrow, I’m leaning towards the Methow. Bone, any good leads, ideas, etc?

Thanks for all the encouragement, it is very much appreciated.

Hairy, just sit back have a beverage of your choice and enjoy the show. I do have to ask though, why "Hairy"? :dunno:

rougheye, my legs may get real tired tomorrow so expect a call. :chuckle:

Long story on the "Hairy" 300....  I would love to sit back but this is killing me...  I'm most likely coming over Sat. and have a couple of sleds in the works for play.  I'm confident you'll have the pig down by the time I get there.  If not, me sled you sled.  Have you checked out the power line side of Crum?  Good cover and fairly open at the same time.  Anyway... Merry Christmas!!!!

Hairy, send me a pm with more detail on the powerline side of Crum. The upper part of that road scares the sh!t out of me. I almost lost the explorer (and me) several weeks ago coming down. That was before all the snow. With all the snow, I'm not sure it would even make it up.

Thanks Pope, I appreciate your efforts.

My brother drew the late Peshastin any elk tag in 2004/2005.  Season runs from November through the end of February.  He hunted 40 + days before killing his bull with 3 days left.  He passed some really nice bulls early on then the weather turned very warm and all the snow melted scattering the elk.  He didn't see a branched bull for the last 3 or 4 weeks, just cows, but kept holding out and it paid off.

I have a feeling 300 is going to kill something very special!  He deserves it!

Just got back from the Methow. Tried a few of Bones leads and saw lots of deer throughout the day. The first area, very low on Thompsons Ridge turned up two small bucks and several does. The area was hit hard with snowmobiles and snowboarders in the last couple days, didn't expect the big bucks to be hanging around there. The good news is that I didn't have to put the snowshoes on, I was able to walk in snowmobile and snowboard tracks. From here I moved to the Pearrygin unit. I stopped to have a snack at the shooting range and could see 30+ deer from my vantage. One really caught my eye, it was a large buck with incredibly tall backs, but the fronts were weird. After looking at him with the binocs I took 3 quick pics before he fed up and over the hill. Wish I had my camera cable so I could zoom in on him and get a better look.  :bash: Didn't have time to get the spotting scope on him. Last year 50Cal and I were in this area about this same time of year and there was rumors about town of a monster that was frequenting the area above the range, I sure hope this is not him, I hope his larger dad is still out there waiting for me. Two rigs pulled in to do some target shooting so the show was over.  I moved next to the wildlife area at Bear Creek, there were 3 rigs there and several XC skiers heading up the road so I scratched that walk. Next, I went to another of Bones areas but it turned out to be too much for the Explorer and the snowmobiles were running around like mosquitos in July. From here I worked my way down the valley, saw hundreds of deer near the valley floor but no shooters. Good thing, most of it was private anyway.

MichaelJ, your friend is a crazyman, I can't even imagine that. I am sitting in a heated motel room with the news on tv right now, typing on the internet.

Lowedog, 40+days, that reminds me of a moose hunter who hunted his azz off for about the same time after I chased his shooter bull away on opening day.  :chuckle:

And again, thanks to all for the support.

Dan, keep at it man.  I hope your having fun being able to check out new areas.  Suppose to get some more snow here the next two days.  I hope your not having nightmares of the buck that almost ran me over :)  Although it would have been a good story for you to tell about me getting run over by a 180 inch buck haha.  Hope you still have your head up. And you got a week, many many hours left. so dont stress. It only takes one buck to make all this hunting and driving and hiking worth it.

I pm'ed him my response.  Looks like it's a trash factor buck and won't net well.  My source says he is rather impressive though.  Also, it's hanging out on the property line between my friends farm and the next.  Sometimes it's on his side, sometimes it's not.  Not sure about access on that farm, but it's probably ok.  I haven't seen it with my own eyes so I'm not going to make Dan drive out to the wheat fields and waste one of his days on a hunch.  I know of another farm near this one that has huge whitetails on it.  Not sure Dan wants to burn his tag on a whitey.  Also, hunting this wide open wheat makes for either 600 yard shots or quick running shots.  It can be difficult.  I'm thinking about heading over there this weekend to see what's out there.  I've got the same issues Bone has...family wants me around this time of year.  If I see something I'll take a picture of it and send it to Dan, he can make up his mind if he wants it.

Thats the plan for me on Friday if I can swing it.  I know where two dandies are, I just need to make sure he can get to them, and get them on film for the man to judge.  He'll probably be in the Entiat Friday, but if interested, I'd get him out in the woods.  The snow is gettin gdeep though.

Whitetails are so dam hit or miss in that country.  I'll see if I can locate one without pushing it off the property.  They stick to the eyebrows until the last second and then take off.  The biggest whiteys will be 160 to 170 class that I've seen on the property...  I'll probably have to bring some moose steaks to trade also...lol.  I'll hit the whitey ranch if I have time.

Dec 27 update:

Hunted lower Entiat today, fog/clouds/snow really limited visibility. Deer sightings were way down today. But fear not, one of the hunting-washington members got tired of seeing me flounder around and is bringing his sleds over to the Entiat tomorrow. Here's to rougheye :brew:

I hope to bring some good news tomorrow.

I have to tell a story though, not related to hunting, well maybe slightly related to hunting. 50Cal was able to see this first hand while here. I have two young construction workers in the room next to me and I have to tell you, these guys are machines. They get back to the motel from work around 5:30ish every afternoon, clean up and go to town and not return until exactly 1:45am each night, motor skills highly impaired. You do the math. A few times they have brought back companions from their nightly excursions (the walls are too thin). They normally get to sleep/pass out at 4ish. At 6ish every morning, while I'm doing my Groundhog Day routine, their boss pounds on their door to wake them up. They always make it to work. I wish I still had that youthful exuberance.

Dec 28 update:

Met rougheye bright and early at the end of the plowed section of Mud Cr Rd. This was almost like a guided hunt, rougheye removed the snow from the sled, started it, and drove it off the trailer. This was my first time on a sled in 15 years but it was a blast. I only got stuck once, rolled it once, and had to have rougheye turn it around for me once. We hit the entire Entiat unit from mud east to the Columbia, stopped, walked out finger ridges and glassed at dozens of spots. I can tell you this, I think I've seen every one of these deer (including bucks) at least once. Total deer count was over 200. It was a great day of sled riding and rougheye was an awesome sled guide. After about noon the other snowmobilers came out of the woodwork and cut some of our rides short. We had to hit more remote skid roads from this point on.

LongTatLaw, I've shot many deer in my life, I'm looking for a special deer that I'm not sure exists anymore. :chuckle:

cowboybilly, didn't take long to figure out who you are. :tung:

The hunt continues. . . .

Its your tag and we all support your standards but man it would seem like a shame to not use it at all. thats all. my 2 cents but do your thang brother.

Im hoping you get attacked by about 220 inches of deer this weekend...lol

I have made the link with Hairy (that name scares me) and he has recruited several locals to join the cause. I stopped by one of the guys house this evening and he has a stack of  mule deer sheds that is crazy and he's only been collecting for 3 years (I will get a pic for the shed topic board). He could outfit many lodges with chandeliers and lamps. 50Cal will be back tomorrow early AM to see if we can roll his truck like I did the sled today.

Found your buck today.  It was about 100 yards from where those other two were.  Didn;t see them, but a cross country skier did and said they moved into te timber when a pair of sleds oved through.  The sleds were from the gamedepartment and a houndsman so must be after a cat.  Anyhow, he is a three point, but about 32-33 inches wide.  Thats a 180 plus 4x4, a non typical trash buck and now this 30 plus incher within 100 yards of each other.  I'll get you a picture.  It will hav o wait until morning.  I'm in hot water with the Mrs.  Not happy that Idabooner and I were in the woods together.

ah to hell with her,,,,here are two quick pics.  Let me know if you are interested.  The 4x4 is more square, and not quite as wide, but at 30 or more.  Definate 180 net, close to 190 gross, and you have to know me by now that I'm conservative and know antlers.  the trash buck is about the size of the govenors.  Not quite as tall, but more to his stickers.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fholy.jpg&hash=f9948fca5ddb6d20e11f787acceda2a64d916afb)

p.s.  he has abouta 3 to 4 inch tine coming off one of his bases, forward and up a little.  I hope I have it on film.  I thought it was an eyeguard in the spotting scope, but then he looked our way.  He could care less about our presence.  I finally got tired of taking from behind shots and hd Idabooner blow on his predator call from Bearman.  Made him look at us for a couple shots, then he went back to eating.  There were a couple other smaller bucks around as well, but I know you aren't interested in them.  I'll get a bunch more pics up when the screaming is done.  Damn she is pissed.

Hey guys,   The glory years of 02 and 03 are pretty much over   We took the sleds all over the lower Entiat, We saw alot of deer but no monsters. I dont know why I was surprised after all the biggest bucks stick out and they have to dodge 375 permit holders in a solid month in wide open country, with snow pushing them down and hot does running everywhere. Then if you still have your raffle tag add 40 or 50 snowmobiles running everywhere. If I was a big buck and somehow I survived I would go down to the breaks of the coumbia and jump in front of a truck. The state sure screwed this one up.Oh well,Its still a good place to hunt .  GOOD LUCK DAN!! :brew: :brew: :brew:

Divorced yet?

Depends what minute of the day it is.  I took one day off in two weeks to go look for bucks and spend a day with my Dad, and that was just too much.  She forgot the 5 days last week that I spent at home on vacation doing family things.  Go figure!
Bak to photgraphing woodducks on my lunch break I guess. :)   Dan has the coordinates...lets see what happens.

Rougheye, its pretty ridiculous up there isnt it?? pretty sad as to what has happened with the herd. And the Game department doesnt care. they think things are just great.  It could be one of the best mule deer herds around for big mature bucks. But for some reason they just want them all shot.  Why to many people hunting, way to many people just up there in general on the winter range.  I am sure Dan appreciated all your help.  And i am sure you still had fun.

Good luck dan, hurry up and shoot something, I cant handle another one down to the wire. Im starting to have sleepless nights and nightmares from last year haha

Im sure I might offend some people here but why can u ride snow mobiles in winter range for deer but not elk  Its big fines over here if u even accidentally ride into a herd of elk.To many shed hunters riding all the roads  . Ya, I had loads of fun.Any excuse i can get to go into the mountains.

For one, most of the winterrange for deer is on state land or private land in the Methow.  Most stateland is closed to snowmobile use.  Basically it boils down to people not having any common sense, such as exercising your dog or watching it run deer for fun.  Guys run the deer to get their antelrs to drop.  Selfish, greed what drives these folks.  No honor in it.  The more use or impact olks have, the less chance deer have of surviving.  There is a line.

Hey Bone, What does that trash buck look like??? I love the Non-Tipicals! Did 300 head up that way today? Big snow coming in tonight is mixed rain and snow here in Renton right now. I would hate to see him get "weathered out" at the end of the hunt......

I didn't get crap for pictures of him....no excuses, I screwed up.  I didn't want to get close or to push him at all.  he was a longgggg frickin ways away and I was using an experiment for a set up, my 35mm film camera with a spotting scope attachment.  My eyes apparantly werent good enough because what I thought was in focus was not.  Phot house didn't even charge me for them.  The typical was a complete blur.  That was one reason why I went back this last time, to get some decent pictures so Dan could decide if he wanted to "waste a day or the gas" to go see them and shoot them for himself.  He is a basic basket buck and if I remember right 8x9 or 9x7 or something like that.

Ok, got over to the wheat ranch this morning and scouted some bucks.  Saw 20 bucks or so.  The biggest was a 160 mule deer.  Perfect 4x4 about 26" wide.  Wasn't close enough for trash points.

The scoop is that there is a 7 point whitetail running around the ranch.  I got to hit the other ranch tomorrow and see.  Not sure what 7 point means to non-hunters but they said it was the biggest hey ever saw.  And they have lived here for a few years.

Sorry for the delay, I'm dragging after a long day. Lots of hiking, glassing, etc. We hit it hard today, 50Cal in Swakane, Hairy and myself in the Entiat. Spent most of the morning with one of the locals glassing areas above orchards. Saw lots of deer including two small 4's, one huge 3, one good 3, and several other does and little bucks. Not satisified, Hairy and I hiked into Stelico and split up once on top. Not much new from before, lots of deer but no shooters. Time is running out but I plan to hit it hard until the end. I did get to eat a homemade spagetti dinner tonight thanks to the Olin family. It was way better than the canned food I have been eating.

Thanks for all the support and help on the side, I'm not sure how I will be able to pay everyone back.

Geez, 300 - one thing's for sure, you're giving that tag 110%.  You must be on a first name basis with just about every buck around.  Except for one, heh, heh.  I don't think that one is going to be too pleased with how his first meeting with you turns out  ;).  It has been fun cyber-hunting alongside, but I'd much rather be there.

We were hoping you'd get this thing done a little sooner but understand after last year's raffle hunt.  You're a better man than me - I think I would have succumbed and burnt some powder by now!  But like you say, it's a once in a lifetime deal, so best of luck.

Hairy - please make sure 300 get's pics & post up as soon as possible after he tags him, will ya?!!

No doubt, take a digital with you, set it to RAW if it has the ability if not the highest quality it will shoot, then max out your card. Remember to get the one or two great shots you need to take lots of bad to average ones. Thats the beauty of digital, its not going to cost you anything except a little more time to go over each one.

Fingers crossed boys!  I gave him coordinates to a couple great bucks today.  I hope them and the weather are cooperating.  You guys know I don't just blow smoke, but this year is a tough year for the hunter.  There just aren't that many big ones out there.  My hats off to him for whatever he brings home in the back of that truck, even if its tag soup.  WELL DONE!  He is in a really good spot right now as I am typing this.  Hopefully its happening.  Here are a couple more lousy shots of boys on that ridge...you'd think one f these days I'd learn to take better pics.  These guys spotted me though, a blurrry pic or no pic...your choice.......sending you a little mojo Dan

This kind of support for a fellow hunter is what makes this board so great!  You all deserve our utmost respect and appreciation for helping 300 out, and should feel deserving.  I for one would love to buy you all a round when this is over and we get a chance to hook up!  It has been a fun ride and feeds my hunting addiction, even if only in cyberspace.  Wish I was out there helping too, but I know of no monsters out there.

Second to last update:

Hit the Methow today, 50Cal dropped me off in the hills above Winthrop and essentially picked me up in the hills above Twisp. No sleds today so the boots got another work out. Hit Bones area hard but could not find the big boys. It was an awesome sunny day out, very cold, but sunny, so there were a lot of XC skiers, snowshoers, and sleds out and about. I think they made the big bucks nervous so they hid. Saw tons of deer, lots of small bucks, so Bone and Huntnphool definitely sent me to the happy wintering grounds. I didn't want to end the day early so I kept up high and went on and on and on. Same thing over every ridge though, lots of does and small bucks. When I finally called 50Cal to come pick me up, he was surprised by the distance traveled. I did see my first set of cat tracks today. With all the miles I have put on this year I finally cut some cat tracks. Not to long after seeing the tracks I ran into some more XC skiers, they asked what I was hunting, I said deer, and they replied that there was no deer hunting open right now. I took a few minutes to explain. They said they just saw four does just a quarter mile back. I thanked them and told them about the cat tracks and they got really concerned looks on their face. I think I'm even with them now.

I have some opportunities to fill the tag with a good buck tomorrow but need to sleep on it because it borders on whether it is "hunting" or not.

It's almost over, I think I will remember this experience forever no matter what the outcome.

Don't sweat the hunting issue on this one especially at this point in the game.  You have put the time in.  Don't think others have not or will not take a great buck they did not walk miles or hunt years for.  Heck if someone called you with a sure bet at a 180 or better I hope you would take it.  If you have an opportunity at a good buck take it.  You have hunted hard and long, and IMO desrve any buck to hang as a memory of this hunt.  Whack it and remember all the good times leading up to it.

I almost called you today Dan, but decided this buck was a bit too small.  I got on to the same mule deer I saw yesterday and got a bit closer so I could take a look at him.  He's in the following pictures.  Obviously, all the deer this time of year are out eating on the winter wheat.  This deer was in the dirt field eating...and the property line is the grass and fence.  He comes out on the property where you can hunt him during the day to feed and beds on another guy's property.  I'm sure I could get permission on the other landowner if I wanted and the buck was a tad bigger.  He ended up being a 4x3 frame with quite a bit of trash.  The right side only has 3 typical points, but a good amount of trash.  The buck would not net score well.  But I thought he was a cool buck.  Not terribly wide but he was high.  All in all, I saw 400+ deer and maybe 30 bucks...  No sign of the big muley or the big whitetail.  Sorry 300, I tried to find a buck for you.

Shawn

Tough call on the buck that would not really be "hunting". I don't think any of us would disagree that you have not put in a valliant effort. I don't even think valliant describes it. From the stories so far sounds like you could use an easier day.

Good luck for one last time!!!!!

I don't have any problem with an easy one.  Heck, if you shot the one I posted in the picture above you would simply need to drive up to about 500 yards, turn the radio down, put your beverage in the cupholder, lay the gun across the hood, take a deep breath, and shoot him.  Then we simply would drive up to him and drive back to a heated garage and an electric winch to clean him out...  Doesn't get any better than that.

Agreed!  :brew:  Anybody notice how many times this thread has been read?  11,000+.  If that isn't evidence of how much we've enjoyed this ride.  Thanks a ton 300, and all of you who are out there busting your ass helping out.

But I still think 300 is gonna put his tag on a brute tomorrow!

300 -

Hell of ride, thanks for faithfully posting each day so the rest of us can follow along.

Unless you got a hot lead tonight on a monster, I believe you've earned the right to go after a lesser buck even if it does seem easier.  How many times have we heard of guys nailing jumbo bucks in the general season after a few hours in the woods?  I respect whatever you decide, but if it were me, I'd be on the hill tomorrow looking to get my personal best on the ground and into the back of a truck.

Just my two bits.  You've paid your dues on this tag so whatever you decide I'm behind it 100%.

Go out and enjoy your hunt tomorrow!

My wife keeps yelling at me because we are trying to play games with her family tonight. I keep getting up and checking. If 300 doesn't post soon I will be sleeping on the couch.

By "games" are you referring to one of those sensual foot rubs you are always having to give your mother-in-law?? :chuckle:

Best of luck and THANKS for the UPDATES, it has been awesome.  Get something you'll be proud of, you will have enough memories to last a lifetime, I do believe the memories are always just a little bit sweeter when you have a set of antlers to look at and hold but thats just my opinion.  Can't wait to hear from you tomorrow.

Well said Iceman. When I look at the heads and horns in my home and in my photos what I remember most was the chase, camaraderie and effort put in trying to fullfill my dreams. Be proud of whatever you decide to harvest tomorrow, even if that is nothing. You have had an awesome season, as well as everyone following this thread.  It's all about the hunt, not the harvest. Whenever I have harvested an animal there is always a huge rush and tremendous amount of excitement but I must say, some sorrow too. Because then I know the hunt is over. To me the hunting is whats so damn fun. Killing is easy, hunting is hard. Which makes it so rewarding. Good luck, have fun, be proud. You gave this hunt 200%. I would be honored to meet and shake your hand one day.

Maybe we should rally the game commission for a few more tags like this, a couple of each species, spread throughout the year, with a provision where folks must come here and check in daily as their hunt progresses...!

Nahhh, probably wouldn't work, it is hard to replicate an "original", something as exciting at this one...

i am soooo pissed at dan for putting me through this again!!! haha.  this time last year i was going welp its almost over thank god!!! We were makin our moves on our boy around this time. I know dad had decided on what he wanted, and what we had passed on in the 180's low 190's class. And he didnt want to settle, i wouldnt let him settle.  But it was definitly beating on our brain on the bucks we had seen and not taken.  But we were definitly ready and willing to take home just the raffle tag.  I am sure Dan will make the right decision.  On passing up the buck that he did when he was with me, i am not sure if he is still happy about passing on it, or is thinking he should have taken it.  I tried getting a hold of him last night, because i had a nice bucky for him today. But no word.

Just so everyone can get to their New Years Eve functions and your wives don't think you're crazy anymore :chuckle:, the raffle tag will go unfilled this year. I decided against my last day options. I went in wanting a solid 4pt, 180+, thick dark horns and I did not find him.

No hard feelings here, I have some great memories and pics I will post in the Photography area in the next few days.

I was going to pull a fast one and say I made all these stories up over the last 17 days and never left home but since Garrett and rougheye actually saw me. . .

Happy New Year to all, let's go have a few cocktails. :brew:

Great job Dan!  I think everyone appreciates the effort that you put into that tag.

I for one can certainly appreciate it since I had the raffle tag in 05'.

A 180 buck in WA is a tall order to fill.  Yes there may be a few out there and a few are killed every year, but the total number of hunt days compared to the number of 180+ bucks killed is a clear indication of the rarity of that quality of buck in WA.

When I talked to the governors tag holder in 05', he had been searching for a 190 class buck, hadn't located anything in the 180 class and to my knowledge - failed to fill his tag.

Again, congratulation on the experiance and great job! Enjoy your New Years.

So rest up, enjoy the after glow, and hurry up and get those pics posted already!

Thanks for the adventure. My wife walked in and I told her the news. Her response "why did he waste the tag, that was dumb". Man some people just don't understand that it is not all about the kill.

Way to set a goal and stick to it. It is just been a tought year all around for big bucks. You have a memory that will last forever and that is what matters the most. I like looking back at pictures and saying, could have killed that one, could have killed that one, now he will be a better buck next year. I'm sure you will do the same.

Way to go!!! :brew:

Dan, congratulations are definitely in order here. It takes a real man to set a goal that so very few actually accomplish, and a even bigger man to avoid temptation and stay the course, well done.

“Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.”

I think you have lived up to this quote, one of my favorites!!!

Understandable if you should feel a little down but don't ever think you failed, your a success in my book.

Congratulations 300, you set a standard and stuck to it.  You worked your tail off and should be proud.  Before it gets stale and you're back in the swing of regular life, you should frame that tag with a bunch of your buck photos around it.  Years later, I bet you'll be WAY more stoked looking back on the bucks you passed than compromising your standard for something less than your goal.  You've also given a whole bunch of hunters a sweet three week ride.  I sent the link to this thread to my hunting buddies in AZ who were absolutely stoked reading the updates and seeing the comraderie of Hunt-WA members.  There's people all over who are raising a glass tonight in your honor.

No, it is not a second tag...the raffle draw just gives you permission to use the single tag you already have or eventually purchase after you win the raffle.

Actually it is my understanding that with your general season tag you can draw a special permit and hunt both. For instance 300 could have drawn a entiat late rifle tag and hunted both that and his raffle hunt to the end of the year. The gov east side elk tag winner got lucky and drew a branched bull tag in the general draw so he was able to take two 350 plus bulls in Washington this year! I don't really think this is fair as one of those tags is enough for one year in my opinion but I believe that is the way it is. nwhunter

i say congrats. you have hunted longer and harder than most of us could ever dream of. i would hope that i could do the same as you have all season long. it is easy for me to think that i would rather eat tag soup than settle for a lesser buck but i am not in your position. what ever happens you should be proud of how you used this tag of a lifetime. congtats again.

Amen!!! All kidding aside buddy, you have no reason for regrets, but you already know that. I'd give my left.....well, you know, to have that same oppertunity to skip out of work and be in the field as long as you were able to this year. memories are as valuable if not more so than a head on the wall. Especially when you concider the many friends you have made in the process!!!! Thanks for sharing all this with us in the office and also on the forum!!!! i think you deserve a large group hug!!!!

Congrats to you 300, way to stick to your guns and go after only what you started after.  Thanks for the stories and the updates along the way.

Actually Dano was just confiding in me that he came home early because on the last day he was tracked by a cat back to his truck and it shook him so bad he did not have the nerve to step foot back in the woods. He was able to snap one picture before it ran off.

Congrats 300 on an AWESOME example!  It's almost cooler that you can look back and say you passed on all sorts of bucks and held out until the end!  Rather than say you shot a 160 buck on the last day because you didn't want to go home empty handed!  Definitely an awesome hunt that will be remembered on the board forever!

I'm in awe, I don't think many of us would have been as diciplined as you.  Your the man for sure.  Hope you took some pics for us all to see.  I'm sure it was a great ride, it sure was for us.

Something all of you might think about in the future should you have a similar opportunity. Take a good camera and lens with you and snap lots of pics of deer you pass on. For me it helps curb the nausea of not tagging the buck you were lokking for, you can look back and proudly show a 177 class buck you passed on because he just wasnt quite what you wanted. You should see the look on friends faces when you show them and tell them that, almost as much fun as dropping a monster :chuckle:

Hey 300,I have not read every page on here but I am just curious, Did you ever check out the blues or selkirk areas? I have seen some dandies around there.

Thanks for all the positive replies.

Ross, no, I did not hit Selkirk and the Blues. I spent 11 days in the Entiat, 6 in the Desert, and 3 in the Methow. Plus 2 days in each unit pre-scouting.

What turned out to be the biggest that you saw in the desert?
Title: Re: Eastern WA Raffle Deer Tag
Post by: wastickslinger on January 02, 2008, 09:51:18 PM
180 ish is the biggest I have seen in 3 months. August/September I saw a few bruits. There were 3 desert rifle bucks that grossed 180+. One of them we have been watching for a few years.

The problem with the desert is that you really have to know it. There is no migration and herding up. The deer stay where they are at all year. Well in a general area. They lay low in the thick crap until the sun goes down.

There are times when i will go weeks without seeing a good buck and then boom there he is, and just that fast, he is gone.

I hope the added youth tags help with a handfull of the dinker 3 points and four point in the coming years.

There were three bucks that come to mind. The first was a 26" 4x6 non-typ I saw while the permit guys were hunting. It had a great looking 6 side and a weak 4 side. It might have scored high gross but it was an ugly looking rack. The second was a 150ish net 4x4, great looking symmetrical rack but a little small all the way around. Finally, there was the 28" 3x3 regressed buck with great main beam and really weak tines. The deer was the size of a horse, I just wish I would have seen him 2 years earlier.

300- just out of curiousity, did the 6X4 have inline extras. Like turkey feet?

Seems like we always see a few of the big regressed 3's every year like you mentioned. That tells me that they are very good at hiding out.

is this post some kind of record for times viewed and number of comments posted, at least for this site. by the way 300 i'm glad you stuck to your goal, and wouldn't settle for less. It says a lot about the type of hunter and person you are. Hold your head up.

Also maybe I'll draw the raffle tag next year, and you can tell me where those few 180's were. Maybe next year they'll be shooters! :chuckle:

I'm hoping for those pics pretty soon of the ones you played catch and release on.  I can't remember if you said you got pics of the one up Ramsey, and it seems like there were a couple more.  I honestly don't care if they are blurry or if they are 300 miles away.  If you get a chance, I'd love to see them.

Here are the pics to go along with the story. As you will see I’m not a photographer. These deer are a good representation of what I was seeing though. Everyday I would see a couple of great looking 3pts and a couple of small 4pts. The two best deer of the hunt were not photographed, the first was the 4x4 that Garrett, Ryan, and myself saw on Dec. 20 (it’s Garrett's fault, my hands were full with a gun :chuckle:), and the second was a monster 3pt that 50Cal and I saw on Dec.23, he got away before I could dig out the camera.

The snowcat was mentioned throughout the hunt, here is one pic of it in action and one of it waiting to be dug out.

Here is 50Cal’s truck that we abbused.

Here are some Entiat deer, like I said before lots of 3pts.

Here are two small fours and large 3, not good pics, but the three was a pig. The two fours were taking turns sparring with the big three. I was waiting for one of their horns to fall off so I could get to it before Miles :tung:, but no luck.

Here is the big 4x2 that I mentioned on Dec. 18 along with some of the other deer that took off running every direction.

Here are a coule Methow deer (Ramsey drainage), the first two have a good 4pt frame, real tall, but either the horn was weak or broken.

There are a few others I put in my gallery, but I think these pretty much tell the story. Sorry in advance if you still have dial-up :chuckle:.

This pic is for Miles. With all the area covered, I found these three sheds that also tell the story of my hunt, a small 2pt, big 3, and small 4. The dollar bill represents the money I have left to my name after the hunt.

FUNNY!  We totally passed on this buck about the 8th of November!

Again I'm almost positive we passed on this buck around the 7th or 8th, and again on the 16th of November!

I think it's funny how we kept running into people during the November Rifle tags that kept saying they were waiting for all the migrators to be pushed down... funny how everyone thought I was full of it when I kept telling them I thought the majority of bucks were already down... Looks like very few more bucks got pushed down since then.   :dunno:   :dunno:

But next time boys i wont forget my camera.
