Thought you guys would like to see some dirt nap wolves :) :)
Killed in Western Montana by a good friend of mine on Thanksgiving weekend. 70# female, F&G said it was 9 month old.

That's sweet ...now go tell him to go find the rest of the litter :dunno:

This one was killed by my hunting partner last Saturday. The hunt started on thursday night for us. We spent most of the night driving road and looking for fresh tracks in the snow. We located a pack of 4 wolves on friday morning and started tracking them.
They were working a ridge with lots elk and moose sign. We tracked them for 5+ miles in fresh snow and could not catch up with them. We had to turn back because it was getting late.
We drove around and checked the basin we thought they were dropping into. We discovered that they had not crossed the road and were still on the ridge.
I had a wolf trapping class on Saturday and could not go. My partner did not want to go without me, I told him he was crazy not to go, we had them located and a good idea of where they would be the next day.
He went up the ridge on Saturday am and discovered they had crossed the road over top of our track from the evening before. He set up the Fox Pro and started the lone wolf howl.
10 minutes into it he had a wolf at 30 yards :} 55gr BT out of the .243. snow nap!
After the shot the wolf dropped in its tracks. Another wolf walked out at 15 yards and just stood there. He only had one tag in his pocket and let it walk. He is a better man than me :}

I went out to the same drainage today. Snow was old and slushy, made for tough tracking. I covered lots of county and was howling about every 1/2 mile. I located a drainage with 8 different moose in it and figured there would be some wolves around.
I let out a few howl and got a reply from the drainage below me. We howled back and forth every 15 minutes for over an hour. I did not want to drop into the drainage due to the thick and brushy timber. I knew visibility would be 30 yards or less.
I dropped in about 200 yards and let out a couple howls and got a quick response. I closed in another couple hundred yards. I let out another couple howl and got no response. I was standing in the timber and could only see 20 yards or so. I waited about 3 or 4 minutes and started walking again. I stepped out from behind a small fir tree and there he was 25 yards on a dead run right at me.
We saw each other at the same time. He turned inside out and bolted. He was gone in a flash and I never got a shot off. :bash: :bash: :bash:
I just sat there a smiled, pretty cool experience. I will get him next time :) :)

I am game for that idea.

Great job! I was in West MT last month and tried to call some wolves with no success. I guess the howler is a better idea than the distress. What sort of howler were you using? I still have my wolf tag but no more vacation!
-
That is awesome! Keep up the good work
-
That is just killer cool
-
Too cool
-
I use the howler by Rocky Jacobson, I think its called the Wolf Pack?. Really easy to blow and great sound, I use my voice a lot too. The wolves answer up pretty easy right now. Not very many people hunting them right now.
-
hope you fill all your tags!!

I am game for that idea.
I know yesterday that the Idaho wolf killed were at 140, with 40 killed being in the Panhandle alone.
-
If you wound one does that count against your tag.
-
Those are both great wolves!
-
Now that's what I like to see! Congrats!
-
Awesome
-
Good friend and hunting buddy got a nice female today. Called it in to 100 yards, 75#
I had then howling all around but could not make it happen.
-
That's awesome ...I need one in my trophy room

I would suggest some of you wolf hunters record some hounds baying at a cougar or bear up a tree and play it very loud. All hound hunters know that a pack of hounds baying is a virtual "dinner bell" call to the wolves. They will call all their buddies and come in on you in full force. If you howl with a wolf call you might get one or two curious young stupid wolves but hounds baying brings in the big cahutas wanting to kill a pack of luscious tasting hound dogs.
Look out though, because they will try and come in down wind.
-
So sweet! Good luck to all of you guys filling those tags. I hope to see some wolves in the traps to!

New favorite thread!

Had them howling yesterday before daylight. Could not get them to come in and never heard them again.
I am headed out to put out my first wolf traps. I will post pics later. I found some major wolf trails yesterday. :}

Cool photos of some great trophies! I'll bet that scene of the wolf running straight at you when neither of you knew where the other was, will last a lifetime.

You are not a Village Idiot! This is a brilliant calling suggestion!

My Alpha Dog e-caller has a calf in distress call. I have used it once and stopped immediately, it upset the ranchers cows and they were ready to stampede his fences to get to the calf.
That calf call with a coyote pack mixed in might yield some affective results.

No more luck on wolves yet. Been working the traps pretty hard. The weather has been rough. No new snow in 2 weeks. 4 degrees this am. Whats left of the snow is hard and crunchy.
Everyone I know with an e-caller has the hound baying sounds. I havn't had any luck with it. But am sure it works.
-
could you get some bottles of dog or wolf urine to use with the hound sound?
-
Way to go LittleJohn! Great pics and story, really enjoying this thread. Hope you tag out every one of your 5. Thanks for sharing.

Had a wolf take a $hit on a pee post set. Just missed him!!! Got 20 more traps to put out this week, Need some snow!!
Had a couple cows hanging round. Cow on left is sniffing my trap. Glad a put up a walk-round stick  :chuckle:
I hope those elk know I am trying to save their lives :IBCOOL:
