Does anyone use Baquacil Oxidizer to soak their skulls for the whitening process? If so where is a good place to buy it.
-
Nope, sorry. H2O2 at 35% for me.
-
You use 35%, what do you pay and where do you purchase it.
Thanks
-
Best thing you could do is go to your local pharmacy buy 4 or 5 bottles of Hydrogen peroxide($3 per bottle), put the skull in a plastic bag, wrap duct tap around it then fill up the bag with peroxide and let it soak a couple days will come out nice and white.

only takes a few hours to fully whiten deer, bear and elk skulls.

35% is extremely strong. My black bear skull this year took less than eight hours for it to fully whiten. Maybe it's just me.

Best stuff that I have found. I use 50 volume now instead of the 40.

40 volume is only 12 percent, Pygmy is using 35 percent
-
Yeah but what kind of damage is it doing to the bone?
-
No damage to the bone when removed after the desired whitening is achieved. Too each his own.
-
A few of my skulls I used the 35% H2O2 on.
-
Baquacil Oxidizer is 27% peroxide. It says what it is on the container.
50 Volume hair developer is 15% peroxide
Look up the MSDS on both.
-
PYGMY, what did you do to your bear skull? is it dipped looks really cool I'd love to know.
-
Still wondering where to buy Baquacil Oxidizer and the best way to apply it. I'm assuming you submerge it to the antler base then use paper towel over the skull cap and pedical as a wick.

Blindluck - I found this site selling the product: http://www.swimmingpool-discounters.com/products-page/pool-chemicals/baquacil1/baquacil-oxidizer-shock (http://www.swimmingpool-discounters.com/products-page/pool-chemicals/baquacil1/baquacil-oxidizer-shock)

Thanks pygmy

I have seen some of pygmy's handiwork. I would trust what he has to say.

I used Sculpt Nouveaux's bronze metal to cover it. Real metal.

Some examples of real metal skull painting:

Here's another site doing the same thing. This site was the reason I tried it myself. I applied too much patina on the bear :o. Doing this year's raghorn 3 pt bull elk in copper with green patina currently - trying to get better at it.

pygmy, I called the swimming pool company and they don't ship this stuff so I stopped by Aqua quip and found it, Kinda spendy $30.00 a gallon but it's local and available.

I use Salon Care Professional 50 Volume Creme I bought at the local beauty supply place down the street. They said they weren't supposed to sell it to me unless I had a beautician license, but I told them what it was for (and promised I wouldn't use it on anyone's head) and they let me buy two 32 oz bottles. I've done 6 skulls with it, and it looks like I still have enough left for a couple more.
I like it because it's more like goop than liquid and when you pour it on, it stays and doesn't run off.

do you paint the white skulls with varithain or other clear stuff. mike w

hey pathfinder- my understanding is the cream developer does not work unless you mix it with the bleach powder basic white to form a paste then brush it on?
-
We usually have about 1000 gallons of 35% peroxide on hand all the time where I work. Nasty stuff on the skin for sure!

Not true. You do not have to use the basic white. I myself just use flour to thicken it up so it will stay in place.

The stuff I posted comes in a form slightly thicker than liquid (think pancake batter). I put the skull in a plastic tub, pour it over the forehead and up inside the nose cavity, then use a small paintbrush to spread it into all the nooks and crannies. Let it sit for a few hours, then take it out, rinse it off and let sit in direct sunlight until it dries fully.
I don't use "bleach" anything. I made a whitening mix years ago when I first started doing euro mounts that used some bleach... those two skulls I treated with it are falling apart in flakes as they hang... never again... :bdid:
