I would like to know if painting your face up in camo really works on ducks? Is the trouble worth it? How about ghillie suits? I have one I made years ago while in Uncle Sam's Misguided Children program and never thought of using it until I saw one in Sportsmans. Any thoughts?

We hunt four guys to a blind and never wear a mask or paint. What we do though is spread out in the cover so we're not all balled up in one spot, this also kills more ducks because you can cover those birds that flare outside or make wide passes. I love seeing guys with full face masks on or fully painted up, makes me laugh. Just as it does when I see guys across the pond faces glowing in the sun flaring birds.
The key is knowing when you can look and when you can't. Look with your eyes, not your whole face. get into some shadows. I'll paint my 8 year old's face so he can watch the birds work a little easier. But he'll learn to do it right in a few years and I won't have to deal with that mess.
You can wear whatever you want, just DON'T MOVE when the birds are working! These are just ducks, brains no bigger than a small nut. It really shouldn't be that hard to shoot a few of them.

Thats a big deal. The eyes are. I hunt out of blinds, boats Just make shift brush on the spot and lots of jump shooting. I almost always put a little paint under the eyes. almost like a football player. cuts down the glare and when it starts warming up itll hide the glossy oils on your face. you would be suprised how fast birds see your face, excpecially your eyes and your teeth. well good luck and i hope that helps.

I have always painted my face, or worn a net facemask.
It's not so much for the ducks, but so's I don't scare my hunting partners. :chuckle:

No, really I do wear a mask or paint, because it's part of the whole "waterfowling ritual" I was brought up on.
My brother inherited his hat and facemask, from our Uncle, who taught us to hunt ducks.

It allows me a little more freedom to watch birds, I see a lot of guys make a lot of movement trying to hide their face and watch birds.
I "lay back" and watch the whole show, without moving until I sit up to shoot, much like in a layout blind.
When hunting with a partner we face away from each other, one looking to the right and one to the left of our decoy set and landing area, this way neither of us has to move to keep track of incoming flights.
Ghillie suits aren't worth the trouble, they end up a giant wet muddy mess.
A three or four foot tall stick, and a 6'x6' piece of camo cloth/net can do huge things for hiding the human form.
I've got a friend of mine though, that kills a lot of duck, in blue jeans and a red baseball hat, hiding in plain sight... fishing!
Ducks aren't at all scared of him.

Camo face paint does work, no question about that. I used it in the Marines for days on end without showering, Acne gets pretty nasty especially in humid environments. I've been walked on at night looking straight up and people, then shot them after the tripped over me. Anyhow if your hardcore and don't mind getting a little acne use it. Jeff Foiles the "Goose God" uses it enough said.

I find that a mask or a little face paint helps when you are dealing with the sun in your face. It helps reduce glare.

Never use it, but bought some for my elk trip just to boost whatever I need.

This weekend while scouting elk and hunting deer my brother brought a non hunting friend. We had him camo up and put on face paint. While I was telling him to cover his nose, forehead, cheek bones, ears, etc, my brother is in the camper laughing his butt off. A few minutes later the guys asks are you guys putting on paint? We looked at each other and him and both said, no, why? LOL

camo face paint is cheap. It takes about 30 seconds to put on and removes easily if you use specific kinds. I cannot attribute any successes to it but I am using it sometimes.

I wear a baseball cap and keep my head down.......
