I've been looking at a Weatherby 240 S2 or a Howa 1500 in 204. Does anyone have a Howa and if so, do you like it, good, bad and ugly ? I want either for wolf hunting. I already have a Weatherby 257 mag, but I want a 6mm.
I want answers about the Howa only please.
Thanks and have a Merry Christmas tomorrow.

Aren't they basically the same rifle?
-
good friend of mine has one. its in 22 250 with a bull barrel and thumbhole stock. basically the howa is a copy of the rem 700 action, its a solid rifle and pretty stinking accurate, watched him whack a prairie gopher at 450ish with it

That's what I'm thinking from what I've read. But, the Weatherby guarantees subMOA with their ammo and Howa doesn't. Howas are about $40 cheaper, so I'm leaning towards the Weatherby.
-
I have a Howa 1500 with an Axiom stock and chambered in .243..400-500 yard shots on coyotes not a problem.
-
I have one in a 22-250 and like it. Good shooting gun and never any issues with it and have had it for like 5 years.
-
The Weatherby Vanguard and Howa 1500 are the same rifle. I don't have either one, but I can tell you, I love those 20's.
I had a CZ .204. and liked it until I got my AR 20 LBC done. (6.5 Grendel case necked down to .204) That's all I carry now. I just finished a 6mmX6.8 SPC, and it shoots nice, but I still prefer my 20. :twocents:
-
I'm going crazy with all the calibers. I've been wanting a 204 for a long time. I'd like to get a complete 204 upper for my new lower, but they want $600 for the upper. So, I'm thinking rifle and something else for my lower. I want it for long shots on stuff way out in the fields.......

The Howa can be bought as just the barreled action, and then you have all kinds of options for really cool aftermarket stocks. You might check into going that route.

I did see that option too. That could be the best way to go.

I have an S2 in 300 win mag and I have no complaints.

I've gotta go to bed. I have a headache........................ :chuckle:

I've owned three Howa Model 1500's. One was purchased in 1981. It was a .270 and was stamped with the "Smith and Wesson" name. I hunted with it for almost 30 years and never had a problem with it. As for accuracy, it always shot better than I could and, when I was shooting up to its standards, it would shoot MOA with Federal 130 gr factory loads. I replaced it about three years ago with another Howa Model 1500 stamped as a "Howa Model 1500," installed a Timney trigger, worked up a handload for 150 gr Nosler Partitions and it will shoot a cloverleaf when I can.
My third Howa Model 1500 - this time in 30-06 - came stamped with a "Vanguard S2" label and with a handload for 165 gr Nosler Accubonds, it will also cloverleaf the rounds at 100 yards - again, when I can.
Continuing in this vein, a newcomer to hunting friend of mine was presented with a Model 1500 in 30-06 - again an older Smith & Wesson version - and, after a bit of tuning, it shoots sub-MOA with Sierra Game Kings.
The bottom line is that I believe these are the most underrated, unappreciated, un-talked about, unknown, unrecognized, and under sold rifles out there. They don't get the advertising other rifles get nor do they get the word of mouth respect they deserve. Fine. That keeps the price down.
For myself, I'll never let mine go and I will stand them up to any hunting rifle out there. If the purpose of your rifle is to reliably hit what you're shooting at, fire each and every time the trigger is pulled, not spend the mortgage paying for it, and not having to worry about nicking or scratching a beautifully crafted stock that has an action attached, this is your rifle.

I have a weatherby vanguard in the Blackhawk axiom stock. Shoots half moa.
As stated earlier the weatherby and howa are the same action. Any stockthat fits howa/weatherby will fit. Lots of options out there. My next stock will be a b&c A5
Forgot to mention mine is 300wm. If your wanting this rifle for wolf and a 6mm then id look at 243 win. Lots of bullet options and ammo can be found easily :twocents:

I compared ballistics with the 240 & 257 Weatherby. Very close. Not gonna waste my money on a couple fps. Leaning towards a 204 but, I have from 17HMR/WSM- 22-250, so anything in the category is out. I might be wasting my time even looking at any predator calibers.
I wanted to hear the HOWA owners reviews and they sound very promising. I wish I could get a 30-378 Weatherby in a HOWA, I think I'd be in hog heaven......
Thanks for the replies......

I have a 22-250 Howa 1500 and my only complaint is that action is heavy as compared to other options. It shoots great and for the price it is a great bargain. But if I did it over again, I think I would have bought something lighter in Rem 700. I can't speak to the higher lines of weatherby as they are a different action.

I have a Howa 1500 I built a .257 AI on. Awesome action, that has taken everything I have given it.
My nephew has a 1500 in .338 WM. Shoots awesome, and that rubber feel stock is great for wet weather.

I have one in 223 with a thumbhole stock. I had the whole gun/scope camo dipped, new trigger, and hand loaded up a killer 55 grain hornady round and I wouldn't trade that gun for nothing. Nickel size 5 round group at 200, buy a Howa

A guy who has a Howa just bought a Timney Trigger for his gun. Said it would be a big improvement over the stock trigger. The same trigger fits the Weatherby Vanguard rifle. I don't think you can go wrong with either gun. Just a matter of what caliber. I'd get a .243, since you'll probably like it so much that you'll want to hunt deer with it too. :twocents:

I want something that I don't already have a caliber in and that pretty much has the same ballistics that I already own. I want an 500-1000 yard shooter. My 6.5 Creedmoor will already do that. I'm looking online and I'm coming up with nothing....... :'(

I think I'll get a 300 RUM since I already have a few vermin guns.

:chuckle: :chuckle: A big guy like you can probably handle that! I have a friend that loves that round, for shooting across canyons. His last name is Rumsey, so I call it the 300 Rumsey... :chuckle: :chuckle:

I need a big gun for elk hunting since I'm retired/disabled and can't chase elk. I want them to drop in their tracks.

That should do it! Just don't be like the guy that took his .300 RUM to the range to sight it in and complained that the gun wouldn't group worth a darn. When he packed up and left, he left his brass there, and it turned out he bought a box of .300 Win Mag ammo. That brass sure had a short neck! :chuckle:

...............and some people are allowed to buy a gun !

I have a Howa 1500 Lightning in 6.5x55, and while it has been very reliable, it has been pretty average, accuracy wise. It has a very long throat and hasn't been that impressive velocity wise either. I also have a Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special in .223 Remington and it has likewise been very reliable, and is decently accurate. It does have a Timney trigger installed. Bottom line, IMO, the Howas are decent rifles and I like them, but have decided to try to buy American from now on.

Remington 700 BDL 300 RUM stainless/composite from Grabagun is $647 w/$5.95 shipping.

Sounds like a good deal, if the FFL transfer fees don't kill you...
-
I have a Howa 1500 ranchland compact in 308win with the hogue stock and a leupold 2-7x33 on it and it is very accurate. I love it the only thing compact about it is the 20 inch barrel the length of pull is normal full size.

Few years back Howa was a great choice as a donor action because they were not only good but you could pick used ones up pretty cheap. Last one I bought was a Howa 1500 in 270Win. I paid $275 and it was like new. Now that same action sits in a Manners T2, had a Timney trigger installed and is a 6.5-06Ack Imp. Shoots 140 Bergers lights out!
I think the word got out that Howa made good stuff because they're about double in price of what they used to be and the used stuff goes for as much as a Rem. model 700 so building a good semi custom and saving a few hundred bucks by using a Howa receiver is a thing of the past.
Something to keep in mind before you buy a Howa or any Howa made but renamed rifle/s is they have Metric barrel threads and if you ever want to have one re-barreled not all "Smiths" can cut Metric threads. Also, they don't have near the aftermarket parts availability that a Rem. model 700 does but short of those two things, they're as good as any factory receiver and better than most.
-
The actions of the older weatherbys vanguards are also Howa 1500. Howa makes some great shooters

I have a howa .204 and it has become my favorite gun. Very accurate well built rifle. Take it over a newer 700. Also has a very adjustable trigger

Bought a howa 1500 with a hogue stock in .270 win couple years back with thoughts of a good loaner or throw around gun.
I did a lot of research first, but did not expect to get such a shooter!
The barrel is fully floated and with good glass and ammo it shoots beyond my capabilities.
The action is a little loose or almost sloppy feeling, but I'm pretty picky.
I find my self grabbing this gun out of the safe more often than planned. Actually took my last two deer with it.
Very under rated gun. Would recommend it.

27 years ago I bought a used mossberg 1500. The barrel had the stamp Howa on it. It was a 270 win. Mag. With my hand loads I could shoot .5 MOA groups at a hundred yards all day long. Lost that rifle in a house fire. It killed 6 elk 26 deer and 23 bears before it met its demise. Still puts a pit in my stomach. I would buy a Howa in a heart beat. :'(
