looking on the WDFW website it looks like they open Jan 2nd.
-
:( I have to start all over building points. It took 6 to finally get drawn the first time around.
-
Maybe I will draw again with no points! :chuckle:
-
Took me 6 last time as well, it's been 3 years so I'm halfway there!
-
you guys suck. I applied once last year and nothing so I'm crossing my fingers this time!
-
I think I will draw this year :IBCOOL:
But I feel that way every...
-
I liked it when they first came out w spring bear, drew it and much fewer applicants. It gets more popular every year I think!
-
I agree... I drew two out of the first four years...
This year I will have 6 points in the draw
-
looks like I am off to the Fish and Wildlife website.
I know nothing about tag drawings, but looks like I will fiind out.
What are the "points" you talk about? How do you get them and how do you use them?
Sorry if them thar greenhorn questions git ya riled up there but I gotsta know! :yike:
small edit here......I can see from being to the site and reading the faq I am going to be more confused than ever.
-
If you purchase your tags for the 2014 year online, you can do the special permit immediately. I buy all my tags when placing the special permits. Once you have your licence and bear tag (good for the fall hunt), click on the special hunt application. You should see bear as an option for submitting the application. If hunting solo, then pick out the locations you prefer to hunt in order of preference, then submit and wait for the draw. Group draws are a little different; someone has to be the group leader and they will get a leader number the other member must submit to be apart of the group (max 2 for bear).
Points are awarded each year you submit and don't get drawn. They are supposed to help you get drawn above others the following year. In the reg next to the GMU you should see two numbers... (applicants/point to draw). It helps to find a GMU with low numbers in both!! But that isn't always possible with hunt areas that are local.
The area I hunt has approximately 230 applicants for 25 permits. On average, points are 2 before you get a tag... that would be every 3 years.
I received a tag last year, so I'm back to helping a friend get his until I draw again! Still get to hunt bear in the fall with the tag you purchase.
-
I drew with 2 points. This year I'll have 3 fingers crossed.
-
Will put in probably for points only......Besides, nobody shoots any good sized bears....only little ones.

right. Skinny spring bears.
-
Cubs....every single one of them. :chuckle:
Actually....I think last spring saw a greater number of big bears. There was one Skagit hog that comes to mind. Mine out of Monroe was no slouch. I think the earlier green up and slightly extended seasons in a few of the areas helped out a bunch. I'll be ghosting, bro in law putting in for Monroe.
-
Still skinny bears
-
I don't know about that. Mine and a few others had some pretty good fat going on already. Nothing like some of the fatty fall bears we saw posted but I'm very pleased with mine. I think he may have been a barrell robber and into the purina possibly. We had some steaks and a small backstrap roast over the weekend from mine. The backstrap roast I trimmed it, soaked it in a bourbon peppercorn marinade, cooked it slow like brisket....it was very tasty.

You shot him in the barrel huh? Tell us the truth don't be ashamed.
-
Thanks Scout! I did some more reading trying to understand this thing and your response also helped. Some of the stuff on the Fish/Wildlife site was fairly confusing for me. But I get it now I think. I am only interested in one particular draw. Can't get it if you don't try, so head down, and to the grindstone I go! :o
-
You shot him in the barrel huh? Tell us the truth don't be ashamed.
Nah, didn't shoot him off the barrell. However, from where I shot him I know a barrell was about 3/4 of a mile away as the crow flies. Hard terrain to cover for a hunter but a bear could have for sure. I talked with Turner and the main property manager and they had a boar that ripped the barrell off a tree and jacked it all up. Could have been the same boar. I plan to ask the fella next time I see him up there if they had any more problems with an onery one.
-
Man I hope I get drawn. I'm itching to do some spring bear bow hunting!
-
I hope to get it this year .... and if I get drawn I would love to have DROCK, RIPPER and H20 help me with their knowledge .....you guys rock
-
I better chum in on this , this year ...never shot a spring bear ...I always talk about it but never apply :chuckle:
-
I've only hunted one unit for spring bear, I've been drawn 4 times and killed 4 bears. This is one of my favorite hunts, good luck in the draw guys!
-
I may have to draw another tag this year. It's about time for another bear :IBCOOL:
-
I like spring bear hunting for the sheds also. Found these and a few others during spring bear 2013.
-
I like spring bear hunting for the sheds also. Found these and a few others during spring bear 2013.
Now how cool is that!
-
Would a spring bear make for a good first bear? I'm at three points and counting, hoping this is my year

Thanks! :)
While spring bear hunting last year I took a picture of a sow with triplets that was a co-winner of the May photo contest here.

Heck yes! Spring bears will have a lot nicer coat then most of the fall bears taken. Less likely to have major rubs and the hair is very thick and lush.
-
WE all know spring bear is no fun. I wouldn't even apply if I were any of you.... :chuckle:
-
5 points and I still havent drawn. Maybe 6 will be the magic number.
-
Drew with 4 points last season, it was a fun hunt hope to draw another tag this year but doubt it will happen.
-
I had a terribly long and unfruitful big game season(s) this year and my 300ws
Is still a death dealing virgin. I'm super stoked for spring bear and hope
My 6 points will get her done!
-
I been waiting for a rematch with the one that outsmarted me a couple years ago,
-
Does anyone know when the deadline is? I drew the 1st year and saw several but they were always a sow and cub. Haven't drawn since.
-
Here is the one I'm looking for!
-
To improve your drawing odds, please let this topic die...
-
No good bears left after last season....other than this one......
-
To improve your drawing odds, please let this topic die...
you mean this topic reminding people when the deadline is?
-
Yep...that.
D-Rock....don't tell anyone the bear in my pic was out during daylight hours just at the end of the season in the MONROE unit.
Shhh.....don't tell.
-
Was that the one in the sultan basin?
-
Nope....not anywhere near the Sultan Basin.....no....wait.....is Kellogg Lake in that area? Shucks, now I don't remember.
-
Never shot a bear before...I may have to put in for this Monroe tag you all are talking about..
-
You put in and draw I'll help you out.
-
I'll glady help anyone that draws Monroe.
-
Will you even help me?
-
Never shot a bear before...I may have to put in for this Monroe tag you all are talking about..
yep hottest spring bear tag in the state!
-
Ok I got four points where and when can I put in for can't find it available yet. Never killed a bear butwife wants a rug and I need some bear breakfast sausage.
-
Will you even help me?
Yep...I sure would.
Don't listen to Boss....the Skagit tag is the hot ticket! What does he know anyway...probably only shoots flies!
-

Don't listen to Boss....the Skagit tag is the hot ticket! What does he know anyway...probably only shoots flies!
Skagit bears are all gone, my son shot the last one last year. :chuckle:
And that fly gun only works when flies are sitting. >:( >:( >:(
-
Skagit is always my fist choice.
-
If anyone gets a Skagit tag it needs to be Sideswipe. He is up in that area and is due for a good tag. Good man that old timer...not on the forum a whole lot but he is around.
-
Well I went in put in for spring bear for the first time.
-
Where is the information on the fish and wildlife website? I have never done it and wanted to look into what is available. I think I am blind. I can't seem to locate it.
-
Can't find it either.
-
I found it..its actually in this years regs!! duh

I figured out on my own not 30 minutes ago. Since the regs aren't out for 2014 go to your 2013 regs and black bear hunting. You will find the units open there. Then I went here https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/license (https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/license) and purchased it online then https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/specialhunt (https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/specialhunt) here to submit it. Hope this helps you.

Thanks.

I am back to zero as well this year, plus MrMykiss killed MY bear so I don't have much hope for this year :chuckle: I would like to find this dude again though! I don't know how old he is but his damn muzzle is all grey and talk about sway back and potbellied! If the blonde sow keeps that color she would eat a bullet this year though!
-
These are 3 of the 4 I've killed within a half mile over the past few spring bear permits. All are smaller but I couldn't pass up the blonde one, she was 15.5 years old. I haven't see a "due by" date for spring apps but I'm figuring it is on or around Feb 23 based on last years dates. There is time to put in. I'll be ghosting it this year but will be out and about in the Monroe unit and looking to pass on intel.

Oh Boy, here we go again.
First comes the "when/how do we apply?" questions.
Next comes the "when is the deadline?" questions.
Then the draw results questions.
Then, a month wait for the season to open.
Then, hundreds of posts between a couple of fellas about a bear. Same two guys. Entertaining, truly, but sheer pain for those of us who didn't draw.
Good luck, all!
-
You forgot about the back door to :chuckle:
-
Back at the bottom of the list this year. Took the bear in my avatar last spring. Awesome to be hunting in may. Good luck to all!!
-
well i dont see this brought up much so ill ask. never having eaten a spring bear, how does it taste compared to a berry stuffed september bear?
-
A buddy had a spring bear in 2012.....could barely use the meat for crab bait....I shot mine in 2013 and it was a great eating bear. Probably depends on what it was binging on prior to slowing down for the winter.
-
My 2013 spring bear was the some of the best meat I have ever eaten...
-
Spring bear :puke: don't bother
-
Did mine yesterday ....bears here I come :chuckle:
-
I have had 2 really good spring bears. All of mine have been better then the fall bears I have taken. Seems like the fall bears are greasy to me. I am sure diet is what makes the difference. If they get into skunk cabbage I am sure they can get nasty :chuckle:
-

Haha!!! I'm glad you killed that beast! If I didn't want him dead I wouldn't have sent you the map! No shortage of bears in that spot. I hope you pet him from time to time just for me :chuckle:
-
I am thinking of putting in. I have 5 points. The problem I have is if I get drawn, I need someone to hunt with.
I no longer can hunt by myself. Of course, if I don't get drawn the point is moot and I will have 6 points next year.
-
What unit would you be putting in for Hoofs?
-
No good bears left after last season....other than this one......
Why'd you have to remind me of this pic... I'll have to put in for Monroe again.
-
Why is that......does this fella still haunt your dreams? I mean you only missed him by 24 hours!!!!!!!!!!
-
What unit would you be putting in for Hoofs?
NorthSkagit, but I am starting to get cold feet.
I am not sure if I can shoot without hurting my shoulder.
I saw my physical therapist today and he was skeptical.
I checked my points and I have 6. Next year it will be 7.
I would love to hunt Sherman. I know where the bears are. When we used to deer hunt there, we called this one area bear condos. More than a dozen caves.
-
this little jerk chewed up a handful of my cameras over a few square mile area this summer. got about 50 bears on camera in the area but its always this guy who does the chewing. hell be chewing up camera "a" one day, and a couple days later hell be on camera "b" a couple miles away chewing that one..... went on all this spring / summer. and i have the cams 12 feet up, so hes actually climbing the trees just to mess with them. i dont care that hes small, if i draw a spring bear tag he better look out.
-
looks to have the infamous skunk bear stripe? funny cuz i have video of a smaller skunk bear. he chews my t cam locks up.... yup thats what the ol bear box is for.....
-
I have a question about whether or not it's wise to put in for group permits.
I have heard that if two hunters put in and the first has 3 points, and the second has 1 point, they are averaged out in the draw, (which would be 2 points) so they get 4 chances. I have heard that chances are points squared. Is this true?
If I put in as a group leader I'm assuming my buddy has to put in on my application, for my designated units, that he doesn't get to also choose 4 units and get an additional 4 chances, right?
By myself I would get 9, if the last paragraph were right, we would each have 4 chances, so a total of 8 - but thinking that is wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.
-
If you have three currently and your buddy has one this year you'll both get another point for putting in bringing you up to 4 and him to two. Thus makinging your group average 3 points each. Essentially 9 of each of your names in the hat. As a group leader you make the choices of which units to apply for and your buddy is stuck with the same choices. Once one of you is drawn you'll get the permits assuming there is two more available. If there is only one more permit leftover and one of your names comes up the you don't get any because you need two. Make sense?
-
I don't think both people get put in I believe its just the group leader. Otherwise groups would have a huge advantage in the draw.
-

Yeah you may be right on that part. I don't know for sure though.
-

5. Decide if Applying as an Individual or
Group...
Decide if you want to apply as an individual,
as the leader of a group, or as a member of a
group. If you want to apply as a member of a
group, you must choose a group leader. The
leader of the group must submit his or her
application before the members of the group
can submit their applications.
When applying as a group, each member
must be eligible for the hunts that the group is
applying for. If a group application is selected
for permits, all of the hunters in the group
receive a permit and each hunter can take
an animal. The points accumulated by each
hunter in the group are averaged and applied
to the group application. If the number of permits available in a hunt
category is less than the maximum group size,
then the maximum group size is equal to the
number of permits.
-
I get that what I'm saying is if you have a group of 12 not all 12 guys get put in the drawing. You only 1 group member in the drawing but if drawn the whole group gets drawn.
-

-
Got it.
-
Thanks for clarifying guys! I will have 3 going in this year (which is what I drew on last time  ) and he'll only have 1, since it's his first time putting in. Sounds like the group draw would severely limit my chances, both in points and if there weren't enough permits left in the unit. We'll just put in separate and if one of us draws, the other can go help out.
This leads me to another question about maximizing your odds by which units you select. I saw a post on here a couple years back that basically said you should either put your unit preference in order of most-likely to draw to most-difficult, or the other way around. Does anyone have a link to that discussion? When I had 3 points a few years ago, I went by that format and was drawn.
Thanks!
-
Do you guys really believe in the points. Its a joke . I put in for cow tags with zero points three years in a row and drew. My dad put in same unit same time with ten points and didn't draw all three seasons. Good luck on your draws but if you think points matter your wrong. :twocents:
-
Points do matter. I know that from looking at the reports that show the number of points each successful applicant had, and I also know that from my own personal knowledge of permits friends, family, and myself have drawn.
-
Imo I don't believe it . If it were true how does someone draw with less points then another guy. It doesn't make sense.
-
Because even with 10 points you are in a hat with more people that have 1 point or more. 10 is just a figure, but way more people with lower points are applying than guys with 10 or more. Even with your points being exponentially calculated, your still up against thousands of names in the hat. I have 19 this year for elk, I lost my confidence in the system years ago. It's a joke!
-
This spring bear draw takes way too long, feb 28th is a long way off. And that's just the deadline! C'mon wdfw, get it together!

one would think you would automatically get chosen with higher point value then start over then it would rotate accordingly not names in a hat. Not fair for guys with 19 points and a gut with one gets drawn jmo.

you won't get an argument from me, I think quality hunts should be for guys with 10 or more points only. But that's been another subject that will get brought up every year.
