Title: Why not a Martin?
Post by: elksnout on December 30, 2013, 06:50:16 PM
Looking into purchasing a new bow soon. If a guy was to base a decision on what brand from this site you would be buying either Hoyt, Matthews or Bowtech from all the fans on here. I know Martin Archery had (has) ownership issues of late but aren't they still a quality product? Researching new bows, Martin appears to offer up a lot of value for the price. So, why not a Martin? Educate me please.

Martin all the way for me. In the past, wene I have had a warrenty problem, if they could not  match the look of a replacement part, they would send me a new bow!

I've only owned two bows in my life. The first was a Martin Jaguar. That was about 12 years ago. I now have a 2010 Martin Pantera. I don't see any reason to buy anything else. Why not support a Washington State company?

:yeah: I still shoot a jaguar. No complaints about Martin from me.

I shoot a Jaguar as well (circa. 2003).  I promised that if they saved the company, I would upgrade this year.  Been looking at the Bengal.

Nothing wrong with Martin bows. But with any new bow purchase shoot as many in your price range as you can.  :twocents:

never shot another compound.  started as a kid with a wood handled Little John.  recently went 04 Phantom II. killed my first archery deer with it.  then '09 MOAB.  killed a couple more deer.  then 06 slayer for 3D.  now shooting an 11 Onza for hunting.  looking at a SEEKER because i like to be different.  will be interesting to see what they debut at the ATA show.

Thanks for the feedback guys. They seem like a lot of bow for the money. Maybe the reason I do not see Martin mentioned as much as the "big three" on here is that their shooters need not brag..... :chuckle: :chuckle:   Just kidding.

I've shot Martin the last two years (onza and nemesis). Before that I shot Mathews and Bowtech and I quickly realized that both of these bows shot just as good as my guardian and drenalin LD.  The difference is the money Martin was spending on marketing.

I would definitely feel confident with the alien, nemesis or onza.

There is nothing wrong with Martin, just probably nothing all that great either.  As in everything you get what you pay for.  I owned the Cougar when it first came out, and it was a decent bow.  There is a bow review done each year on another website.  I don't know if they did Martin reviews though.  If not there is probably a reason.

If you wind up getting a Martin, it'll probably outlast you.  Mine is a early to mid 90's Martin Pantera.

Can search for my old topic on Martin to review my experience with their bows  :o  This was a few years ago maybe their quality control is better now  :dunno:

Had an Elite XLR since that experience, no complaints  :)

I've owned three bows, all Martins of various types.  My Rytera split a limb and broke a cam.  they immediately fixed both and the bow shot way better than I could.  They built me a custom heavy Bengal (86 lb) for a dangerous game hunt this summer, and treated me well.  I'll stick by them (punny...).

Last bow buy, I shot every bow I could get my hands on, and the Martin felt the best of any.  totally subjective but I've killed more than a handful of animals with them.

Good luck on the purchace!  Enjoy the experience.

Martin has been around along time ....and obviously why ! Never owned one but have shot them a few times ...its funny how we all have our favorite bows but in all reality they will all serve the same purpose ...yeah some are faster and some are slower but it comes down to knowing your equipment and practice practice  practice

If you wind up getting a Martin, it'll probably outlast you.  Mine is a early to mid 90's Martin Pantera.

You need to shoot what feels good to you no matter what anyone else says. Having said that I do think most bows on the market today will be more effecient, smoother and produce more energy than this example. I am sure there is a typewriter in the background somewhere :chuckle:

Is all the ridicule really needed?  Notice a lot of that going on with this site.  Just trying to share my experiences with having a Martin bow.

Not ridicule at all. Stay with Martin, that could be a very good choice. As I said choose what fits you the best no matter what anyone says. It is not riducule to say that the older martin Lynx or Pantera is Very old and almost any of the new bows out there will shoot better. It was not my intention, I apologize if you took it wrong.

The draws are all about 3" too short so, I was really taking it slow through the draw cycle. The nitro 3 is smooth the whole way through with a very minor bump into the valley.

They made some modifications to the riser design, relocated the cable slider and added spacers to the axle.

Since the New Martin got rid of that awful roller guard I think they are a very good bow for the money.  The Alien I took my antelope with last year is quite possibly the quietest bow I have ever shot.  There is a little cam lean but not anything more than any Hoyt I have had in the past 10 years.  New limbs are durable and well matched.  I think the Martin grip needs a little fit and finish done, but it in no way is bad.  You get a lot of things for a very fair price with Martin bows.  And I am really excited about what I hear is coming along for 2015!

My Alien might get some more work in a few weeks when I head out turkey hunting.  And I won't head out after turkey with a bow I don't have complete confidence in.  Still trying to decide between the Experience and the Alien for that hunt, it's a tough decision.
