My cousin was drawn for one of the 6 Kapowsin Hancock bull hunts this year.
He spent 8 days up looking with no clear shots of a nice bull. I was lucky enough to go on Sunday. He had a clear cut picked out already. We parked the rig and started walking while scoping the spur before we came into the clear cut. luckly one time while scoping the road ahead I saw the white tips move on the downside of the hill. We knew it was a bull. My cousin watched via his scope and me with the binocs...damn I was sure hoping this wasn't going to head down the hill into the thick brush again. We kept waiting, then 5 inchs of what was only white tips...slowly turned into a massive rack, then a head, and then the body. He stopped about 75yrd from us.

Big Bull! Great Job!
I can't find the special permit in the regs, some one help me out with a page number?
-
You have to buy the trespass key. Then you get to apply for the elk tag thru Hancock. The state has nothing to do with it.
-
Awesome bull, congrats!!!
-
great bull. Any side shots.

So there were 6 permits last year, how many applied?
-
Only the amount of hunters that buy the trespass key. I don't know the number.
-
I don't think your odds are much better than they are in teh state drawings unfortunately. I wish I could justify the 300 fee.
AWESOME bull though.
-
wow what a pig. congrats to him
-
That thing is a pig!! Any idea of a score??
-
great bull. comgrats to your buddy.
i think the odds of drawing next year just went down :)
-
Nice animal...
-
They sell 1200 permits a year. If you buy a permit you're automaticly put into the Elk raffle.
I live less then a mile from the gate...so for me it's good. Year round access.
Scored a 359.

That is a Monster, Congratulations to your Friend.

Thanks for you’re concern, but you have no idea what you’re talking about.
This is the legal hunting hours from the regs.
Mon Nov 3rdth – Sunday Nov 9th. 6:30am to 5:15pm…..
The picture was taken about 6:55am…
We were in a wooded area on the West side of the hill…with the camera flash it looked pretty dark.
62rd.

Nicely done.
Benchleg,
Let us remember to be civil to each other and not jump to conclusions. If you look, you can see that it all takes place on the same day by the clothes he is wearing and the flash makes it appear night, when it is actually early morning.
There is not call for derogatory comments, it is a great bull and he should be very proud.
-
Well done Fellas!!!
You can see the sky in the background behind the guy, through the trees. Looks legal to me!!
-
Yep jealousy will get you no where!!

What a great bull.

Are all the elk in Hancock/Kapowsin and White River area Roosevelt Elk? I thought most were Rocky Mountain until you were over toward the coast more. Anyone know?

I heard rumors that years ago they planted some Rosy's up there but I'm confident the bulk of the elk are Rocky Mountain.

The state transplanted some Rocky Mountain Elk in the Ashford area up near Mt Rainier National Park in 1930. There were a couple of transplants but all in all it was less than 50 animals i believe. The elk came from Montana. They also transplanted a few up around Enumclaw. It is my opinion and the opinion of many of the taxidermists that i have used is the predominant gene pool is Roosevelt. The WDFW website has alot of published articles that tell the history of the elk in the state. Some of it is some pretty good reading and factual data. Especially i would recommend reading the 2002 North Rainier Elk Status and Trend report written by Rocky Spencer. Excellent info in there. The reason i know all this is that the last 2 years i spent fighting Pierce County over the fact that to get my building permit i had to set aside half of my property for "White River Winter Elk" Habitat of Local Importance. The real reason i fought is that it prevented me from enhancing and or improving the elk habitat on that part of my property. The funny thing is that the county restrictions in the habitat area are contrary to the states science which makes the county in violation of the growth management act. Well i could ramble on for hours on this issue, belive me i got in pretty deep.
Any way the sheer size of the bodies on the elk in this area lend weight to the fact that they are rosies. All the Bulls i have taken in the Mashell unit have been right around 1000 lbs live weight. I know of the owner of a local archery shop who shot a bull in the pack forest that Hung butcher weight at 505 lbs. It was a 6x6 that scored right around 270". That would make it just about as big as most of the washington moose that i have seen on here this year. Anyway that what i know. Hope it helped.
Oh and one other thing is that the washington record book has the entire west side from the pacific crest as Roosevelt. Boone and Crocket has Roosevelts west of I5 i belive because of the intermingling of the gene pool around Mt Rainier. :twocents:

Interesting stuff I didnt know all that...thanks for all the info! :)

You are correct... Those elk are Rocky Mountain
-
Wow!!! What a awesome bull!!! :drool:Congrats. What did he score?

Nice Bull, I've seen many like it and bigger in there. If you know where Camp 1 is, I was born and raised there, lived there more than 25 years off and on and have seen many a nice bull in there. About ten years ago, we had an 8X8 running a bunch of cows right up behind the houses that I swear you could fit a Volkswagon Bug in its rack.
Congrats!

you must know scotty

They are actually Hybrids. The remaining wet-side herds are Rocky Mountain/Roosevelt elk hybrids and include the Mount St. Helens, north Rainier, south Rainier, Willapa Hills and Nooksack herds. The genetic research has been done by several WA. State Game Biologists.
-
WAH!
-
just for the record benchleg hancock has rules stating that you must be out of the gates no later then a hour after daylight. so someone needs to get their facts straight.

AH how refreshing. Someone else that actually knows the facts. It is amazing to me how many so called elk experts don't actually know what they are talking about. You obviously do. Kudos to you. Although i am not sure about the Willipa and Nooksack. If Boone and Crockett will consider any elk westof I5 as a true Roosevelt than Willipa must be pure Roosevelt. Even though Boone and Crockett does not recognize Nooksack as Roosevelt i honestly believe that they were transplanted up there from Roosevelt stock. Anybody could please correct me if i am wrong. I hate propogating false information.
-
That is a great bull. Maybe someday that will be me.
-
hancock gave out 6 permits to people who bought the keys(300 bucks)then they drew 1 permit for employees locally and one more for the vancouver office.plus 2 people from back east got to hunt there for rifle season.even if you draw the multiseason permit through the state you have to hunt only one season.with all this said i will be buying another permit there next year. awesome bull
-
DAMN... :yike: WOW Nice #!@#$#$ Bull.. Congrats...
-
There is a lot of people. When my son shot his deer we dragged the buck to the truck and started the skinning on the tail gate. There were 12 to 15 rigs that went by us. There are lots of people... Most are nice people but you always have a few knuckle heads.
