Anyone want to give me some help with westside bobcat areas? I saw some tracks that I think were a bobcat up around North bend in some granite fields. Is this the ideal location, or are they down low, clearcuts, calling? Post deer, you guys call at night with a spotlight? I live in Everett, anyone going out I could tag along as well. Would be using my .308.
I'm not certain if Bobcats are as hard to get as coug's, if so I'll go ahead and expect a slew of sarcastic responses.

Pm me I will give you some info. I might not get to you for a few days.
-
i have only seen them by chance... of the 3 i have seen 2 are now dead, i got one and my cousin got the other on. the third got away :bash: i got mine with my bow while hunting for elk.
-
Don't run the light until December, and some gmu's are sketchy in December. Jan + is safe at night. Nothing connected to or touching the vehicle either.

Is that cat smiling :)

Sweet cat! That is a good size one.
Chaser PM sent.

Being from the eastside I can't help you out any on locations but if you are planning on keeping the cat for a mount or selling the fur I can't imagine the .308 being to fur-friendly on bobcats. I would definately go to a smaller caliber or even a shot-gun if you are planning on calling. Bobcats are not hard to put down.
-
Ya i know the .308 is not fur friendly, but I would just use the smallest bullet as possible, until I get a smaller caliber. If I get any I will just have the hides tanned and enjoy the bullet holes :D I really want the skull, or if it's a nice one I can just do a head mount.
I didn't think about using a shotgun, do they come in that close? I guess I figured they were harder to get then 'yotes and I needed long range...

Elkslayer is of course right. However, I've shot coyotes with .308 FMJs, and only had dime to nickel sized exits. You should be ok with mil surplus .308 FMJs.
Hit low-mid elevation clearcuts after a snow, or riparian edges with a lot of deciduous brush. Anywhere you've found ruffed grouse is a good spot - especially if you aren't seeing a lot of coyote sign. Once you find fresh tracks, set up with a great backstop to totally break up your outline, and appropriately camoed to your eyeballs. Use a visual attractant - a wing or piece of fur works well - hanging from branch so it suspends about 2' off the ground - should be visible from all directions. Use fawn distress, rabbit distress calls, go through a dying sequence then shut up. Sit still and wait at least 30-45 minutes, they come in slow - in fact, you'll probably just see a cat appear, without any movement, if you see one at all.

i think it wa steves Taxidermy? maybe. in silver lake.
as far as skin ruinning it cant get much worse than my cat was, 1-1/4 inch cut broadhead quartered away does a number.
you could see light through the other side if you held it up by its feet... they sew up pretty well.
-
I'll be sure not to take my bobcat to Frank's Taxidermy. Thanks for the heads up!
This one went a measily 29.5 lbs. with no fat. Mounted nearly 20 years ago now. He looks long, but that is just how he was built.

Very nice! Do you have a website? I'll stick it in my favorites. Excellent faces, it's rare to get lifelike faces on Bobbies. Well done!
Passed all Bobcat tracks yesterday.... shouldn't have. Didn't cut a single Cougar track in about 40 miles of some wild and western driving! (Had one set of chains on, and several spots I wished I had both sets on!) Passed at least 6 different Bobbies that were at least 12 hours fresh. They were hungry. Deer everywhere. Bunnies and Chipmunks everywhere. Cougars must still be above the roads. Should have stopped and called on the Bobcats, but who knew. I'll probably pass them next time too, hoping the Cougars are more active!

Here's one of my mounts, killed with a Colt woodsman 22 LR.

Another bobby killed with a Ruger M77 250-3000, 100 grain cor-lokts...

If you want a bobcat mount that actually looks like a bobcat the man you want to go to is Phil Soucey out of Libby Montana. He does the best cats around. The noses are painted the right color and the eyes are set corectly. His cats look lifelike , just like the real thing. I wish my cats looked as good as his.

I agree, I have multiple birds done by him and my brother in law had a deer done, and he is a great person to deal with. All the mounts exceeded my expectations!!

"This is a stick-up. Now smile for the camera." :chuckle:

Thanks Rainshadow. I just have a 1 page website right know. I'm building a new facility and will add more pages this summer. The site is: www.allthatswild.monstermuleys.com
I also agree that Phil Soucey does great cat mounts.
-
Elkstuffer, I appreciate modesty in people, but I'll toot your horn a little bit for you. Somebody may do "as good" of a job on cats, but I don't see how they could do "better". Excellent work.
-
Elkstuffer, are you moving your business from your house?
-
Think rabbit and grouse. = Alder flats close to 2nd growth fir. Or jack fir bordering 2nd growth.Creek bottoms.
Hunt em where they hunt.
-
No Klick, I'm just still in the process of finishing my showroom/work area and adding the walk-in freezer/cooler. It will be finished this summer with a little luck.
