So my old man kept cars till about 140k, and pickups till about 150k.. and while we have all been in places where we didnt have a choice about mileage, we just drove what we could barely afford.. how long (mileage wise) do you try to keep a vehicle before you trade it in or get something newer?
-
I always get rid of them by the time they reach 120k. Don't know why, but I do. My buddies Toyota has 326k miles on. Second engine.
-
Today's cars and trucks go so much further than they used to that I don't worry about it unless I want something new or different. Good maintenance and better production is producing some crazy mileage.
-
250k + on the old 95 Dodge 12v
three auto transmissions (one was my bad) some front end steering work, rebuilt drive lines
that's about it.
I'd like to trade the old girl in, but the cost of new trucks keeps me happy with her :chuckle:
-
I drive 'em until they puke.
-
208,000 pn my F150. Just got a transmission rebuild and new back axle. Talk about a money pit last year, but it's good, now. Have a Chevy cavalier with over 300,000 on it, most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.
-
I've got 158K on my 1994 Chev Z71 and it still runs great, replaced the starter and fuel pump have been the only big items. Did a break job at 115K with 50% left and did the clutch at 125K. and it still has the original antifreeze when checked it's still good to -5 or so. So not this year unless I win the loto.
-
Maintain them all till I die!

:yeah:
have my 90 Dodge with Dana 60 front axle, Dana 70 rear, A727 auto, 12V Cummins broken sending unit in cable-less speedo so don't know mileage but plan to have that 1 'til I or it dies!
-
My truck has 232k on it and is 23 yearss old.
Now my car I traded in with 120k but the oil pan was almost rusted threw and I had metal chunks in the tranny I think so I dropped it before it went bad
-
Almost 200,000 on the old 7.3 Ford, new axle seal, water pump, alternator and batteries. Hope she's good for another 200,000. New truck prices scare me! :yike:
Of course I'm sure I'll need a clutch soon. :'(
-
I like new vehicles so I usually get rid of them around 100k-120k.
-
100k. Or 5 yrs.
-
Anyone want a 2005 Ford Explorer, 130k miles? I'd loooove to get rid of it >_<
-
I like to spread out mileage, I have 12 vehicles 7 of them have over 100k miles. They quit adding up miles very fast but staying up on maintenance gets to be a nightmare.

This sounds just like a buddy of mine.
-
i have 250,000 miles on my toyota tundra and wouldn't think about sell it if someone offered me what I paid for it, even after putting 50,000 miles on it.
-
With the price of vehicles now days, why would anyone get rid of a rig till it was unreliable. It was like a 10,000 pound weight being lifted off my chest when I finally paid off my 06 dodge....almost $500 a month back in my pocket. I will drive that truck till the frame rots away and the darn thing falls in half.
-
My last one had 170,000 when a gal ran a light.
I drive them till they die.
I think I am now driving the last truck I will ever own.
-
Heck a Toyota is barely broken in at 100K. I put 280K on my first one before i sold for 4K and 300K on my second before I traded in and got 4K for it. Have 108K on my 3rd Toyota, needless to say Im a big fan!
-
I'm at 195k on my '02 Silverado. My wife's Jeep just broke 100k. We haven't made a car payment in 7 years. I'll be excited for a new rig a year or so from now but not looking forward to a payment. Trying to make a payment a month to myself right now to prepare for it.
-
Last truck hit 200,000
Bought a cheap commuter that's getting me 33 mpg for the past year.
Getting ready to bite the bullet and get a new truck, not looking forward to the payment.

I've got 5 vehicles, and only 1 has less than 180k :chuckle:
-
230k on my 1st chev luv diesel, 220 on my second, 299k on my 92 chev S10, shouldn't have sold it still see it driving around. My current Dodge 2001 2500 cummins 69k I'll be driving her for a long time my Toyota 94 pickup 124k.
-
I get antsy and just get to the point where I want a new one. I like new toys. I buy a new car every three years. Just like new rigs.
-
what novel idea...I buy mine usually around 150,000 if I am lucky drive em until they blowup :dunno:
-
Looking forward to downsizing to a midsize compact diesel truck in a year or two but will keep my old rig for a hauler till it dies.
-
I just realised the other day that I've put 100k on my 2002 Silverado since I purchased it 7 years go. I'm hoping for another 100k at least before replacing it. It's been an amazing truck, only thing I've done is a new starter and fuel pump aside from general service. Looking at even used trucks for the price vs. mileage on them scares me.
-
I look at the history of the car. If the rig has had problems and it is registered on Edmonds or other places I use that data points as to when to sell. I take care of my rigs so I typically sell around or over 200K.
-
Just bought a new car and for $3500 I put a 1,000,000 mile factory bumper to bumper warranty on it. I figured we will drive this one for ever. Hope it works out but this is a first for me. By the way it's a Dodge.

I have never understood the logic behind paying off a vehicle only to turn around and get a new one. I financed my truck , payed it off and own it. Same with my wifes first car, we owned her car for 5 years with no payment, and during those years saving for a new one, when the car was showings signs of dying, we bought a new one cash. We have not had a car payment in 6 or 7 years and I cant imagine having another one now. Of course I view things as utility and functional.
-
forgot to add, run it till its dead.

When I was working, and had plenty of money, I would trade once a vehicle reached 100,000 miles. These days, 100K is nothing! I now have a 1990 Bronco II with 158,000 miles, and a 1986 Ranger pickup with 85,000 miles. (Yes! A 1986 truck with 85K original miles.) My 1991 Ranger had 183,000 miles on it when it was totaled in an accident, and if it wasn't for the accident, I'd still be driving it! I had an '07 GMC Canyon pickup, and hated it! It was a nice truck with lots of computerized stuff, and I couldn't sell it fast enough! :twocents:
-
Ex-car salesman here:
Even though new vehicles usually last far beyond 100k, banks are old school and it’s still difficult to get financing on a car over 100k. So if you plan to keep it beyond 100k, you might as well keep it until the maintenance gets too high for you. Your real trade value drops significantly after you roll over 100.
-
My 1988 Bronco II has 263,000. :yike: I'll be selling it soon, trying to keep insurance and vehicle maintenance costs down.
Then I have my 2002 Silverado with 130,000 on it. Probably will have it for at least another 10 years, and by then it will probably still have under 150,000 miles, since I rarely drive it other than during hunting season.
-
My Ford F350 V-10 just turned 140,000. I put a serpentine belt on it before hunting season last year. Other than change the oil, I haven't done much to it. Love that truck, and its paid for!

I have the same truck, been good to me too, changing plugs is a mother though!

Keep it till the new car scent goes away :chuckle:

I have not had the plugs changed....kinda scared to have it done! Guess the shops have it down to a science now and its pretty safe. I still feel uneasy thinking about it! :chuckle: I was gonna spend some tax return money on some maintenance for the pickup, still working up courage to give the green light to pull the plugs. Have you had any blow out since you changed yours?
-
I drive 'me till they're done, thenlunk down the cash for the next one. Looking to get a Chevy or GMC 2500HD in June or so.
-
I'd rather go back to Africa than buy a new truck... 192K on my 2003 Chevy Avalanche and she is still going... I hope that continues to be the case, I want to shoot an elephant in the next 5ish years!

i had a plug blow out of my 5.4 l 2 valve. Truck had about 90k miles and they were the original plugs. Had to have the head retapped and an insert put in, 13k miles later and no problems so far. Make sure they are torqued to the correct psi and if you start to here a tick upon acceleration that sounds like an exhaust manifold leak you may want to check your plugs because one may be fixing to blow.
-
348K on a 99 F350 7.3 new glow plug regulator and routine maintenance still run's like a top
-

Don't know if I'd go that far...
But the same reason I drive such a high mileage truck is also why I live in a cracker jack box house! I'd rather spend my surplus money on my adventure additctions!

The reality is its almost allways cheaper to keep and maintan / repair a rig , but the reality is when do you want a new rig . after 6+ years and 60 k your value drops . I bought a new truck in 2001/2003/2005/2007/ 2009 I figure this one is gonna be around for awhile she has almost 80 k with a steering angle sensor and balljoints , brake job . not bad considering what she gets put through.
-
with all the crap on the new trucks it would be cheaper to keep and maintain your truck :twocents:
-
Got 300,000 on my Toyota truck v6 4x4 . Original engine tranny etc. Maintain well and they last forever.
-
in my opinion in sted of trading in a 150k mileage truck and getting low balled at the dealership, it would be better sell it and make more $
-
I tend to buy rigs after they break the 100k mark, let some other sucker get the huge loss of buying them new. I have three trucks right now, all are reliable and run great, the low milage one just turned 150k, middle one has 245k, high miler has 356k
-
:) As well as new trucks are made I think with reasonable manitenance and driving habits 200K is good for most all of them.

Besides KFhunter, nobody here has spent any big $$$ on new transmissions on your vehicles that have over 100,000 miles?
-
i was driving a 93 isuzu trooper with 205k and it ran alright, but i just couldnt trust it up in the mountains. i need to drive back and forth across the state regularly so i bit the bullet and got a brand new yota couple years ago. its worth the peace of mind that i can drive across the state and up into the mountains out of cell phone range and expect not to break down. gave the trooper to a friend who needed a rig and its still running 2.5 years later.

Wow, that's a fleet. How do you work out the insurance and you must love our States' 30.00 dollar tab fee's.

Insurance sucks at times but my agent is on speed dial, I own them all so full coverage only on the higher value vehicles, I put them on storage insurance which is like $6.00 a month, a phone call to activate coverage when I drive them.
