Title: high buck info needed!
Post by: wrangler on August 28, 2007, 06:07:25 PM: i'll be goin up for the high hunt in the alpine friday night through monday and saturday sunday of the following weekend if need be. iv never hunted the high country, iv been up there a few times on overnight hiking trips in july and august, i never saw much game, other than people that i sometimes wish were open season..... anyways i have all the gear and maps and i was just lookin for some GENERAL info on the hunting the alpine lakes in sept. if i don't shoot a big buck its ok, i have a good spot for the general season just lookin' to see some deer (hopefully a bear!!!) and see the country. i plan on hiking in from the east side of blewett pass. like is said iv never hunted this area and by doin some research and basically throwing a dart at the map this is where i ended up. im assuming the deer will be feeding in the early hours untill the sun gets up then bed down in the shade for most of the day? is there a particular slope that tends to hold more deer? i would guess there's more feed on the southern slopes? also, how far above the treeline are we talkin... are the deer usually WAY up there or just on the fringe? how about glassing, do you like to be up high and glass the medows and slide shoots or be lower and glass up on the hills? so pretty much your basic dumb newb high hunter questions..... also, if anyone has ever hiked in from the blewett area and has some direction id appreciate it! thanks guys!

Also it seems to me that the deer are moving until around 8-9:00 in the morning before bedding down. I spot deer on all the slopes so I have not noticed a trend on which face they are usually on. I was told by a successful ALW hunter to hunt north of Cle Elum around the 7000' level.

I would try to get in a little farther then most boot hunters and a little shy of the horse hunters. Good luck and bring a camera. Branden

Hope you guys don't mind if I post this pic again, I took this one at 7,000 last September.
He was also moving at 8:00 a.m. as well. Good observations.

There is a lot of area north of Cle Elum, towards the Salmon La sac area and north of that. Very rugged stuff, but there are some big deer in there. I've always wanted to hunt up by Navajo peak and north of that but never got into that country yet.

Post by: George on September 01, 2007, 09:03:26 PM: Wrangler, Get a map. The High Hunt is wilderness hunt. You won't find wilderness east of Blewett Pass. It is a very long hike west to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness; Open to High Hunters. The easiest way to get in there it to drive up Teanaway and hike a few miles north into the Ingalls Creek drainage. The easiest access is to hike up the Ingalls Creek trail.

Get a map; look for the Mount Stuart quadrangle (Greentrail # 209 for the area I mentioned. Best wishes as you get this Washington Hunting thing figured out.
