Title: Back country packs?
Post by: elkkillin5 on January 20, 2014, 07:25:47 PM
I have the bivy 30 from sitka which is nice but I'm looking to see what you guys think is a better pack for packing out quarters and all my gear. The only thing that I'm not to impressed with is strapping a quarter to the bivy 30.

Depends on your budget.  I use a eberlestock blue widow, but if I had a spare 700 or so laying around I'd probably grab the kifaru.  Pretty sure Jason Phelps got one last season.  Might ask him how he liked it.  Check out rokslide.com for some good info on hardcore diy hunting gear.

You don't need $700 bucks to get into a Kifaru.  Their DT1 and 2 in multicam are on sale right now.  With the standard lid the DT1 is like $560 and the DT2 is like $535.  Something close to that anyways.

I have the Kifaru Bikini frame with the DT1 bag.  It is the perfect pack for the way I hunt.

Mystery Ranch and Stone Glacier also make top tier packs.  Exo packs is also a new company this year using titanium in the frame (It will be interesting to see how they perform).

These high end packs don't miss any details and you will pay a premium to get into one of these "BEST" packs.

I just punched in the T2, aluminum stays, standard lid, in multi cam and it came up$532 :dunno:  are you selecting the frame and then the pack or the frame/bag package farther down the page?  Before the discount the T2 package is $609, punch in those options and you get $532.

same pack.  You were looking at the bag and the frame  separately.  This is the T2 bag and duplex frame together, package deal.

Im not sure. According to aaron snyder from rokslide forums whos the sales rep Im pretty sure he said the plain timberline - line of bags, the frames are non removable and your stuck with that frame. Thats why the big difference in price. Can someone tell me either yay or nay on this? Hope your not stuck with just the one style frame with no univsersatility besides different pouches and accessories.

MAN!!!!!!  talk about an oh sh*t moment!  Really I don't think it would have been the end of the world.  They said it would have done everything I needed, the only downfall is not being able to switch packs and really heavy loads (like 100 lbs+) is where you see the difference.  Thought I was getting the deal of the century! You know what they say about assuming............ :chuckle:

I ended up getting the tenzing 6000 and I tell you what I couldn't be happier that thing is awesome. I put my 3 year old daughter in there the other night it was awesome. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to backcountry hunt.

I just picked up the horn hunter full curl system.  It's a little bit on the heavier side (8.5 lbs). But it is built for hauling meat and hunting.  The thing I really like about it is that the smaller day pack comes off and attached to the frame for a day pack and you still have the frame for when you shoot something you can take a full load back.  Plus it was 270$.  And made in America.

I just picked up a Mystery Ranch Metcalf used in great condition. I've been eying them for 2 years. It's absolutely amazing. This weekend I hope to load it down with some weight and go hike some trails.

I just received my mystery ranch crew cab. Only taken it out on 2 hikes but ive put in 50lbs in weight in it and it carries very well. They are heavy and expensive but with having the nice frame that really lowers the price on future packs from them. I chose this pack because of its ability to expand to pack in and out and also shrink up for use as a daily hunting pack. Not a huge pack at 5000 cubic inch but Im only planning on 2-3 day hunts.

I would seriuosly consider the new kuiu ultra pack system.  I put it on my back at the salt lake show and that pack is amazingly light and comfortable.  Up until now ive had to always hike out to grab gamebags and pack boards to haul my elk out making an extra trip because my day pack was no where suitable for carrying gamebags and elk quarters.  There new pack weighs just over 3lbs.  Not only can I where it around all day hunting but also use to pack quarters out without giving it a second thought.  The frame itself is made of carbon fibre and is designed to actually have load lifters which has been a problem for some of the other high dollar pack companies.  Remember some of the other packs start out at 8 and 9 pounds.
