Title: Wyoming Deer/Antelope Hunt
Post by: finnman on January 24, 2014, 09:18:53 AM: My wife and I are planning a hunt with two of my friends for deer and antelope near Kaycee, WY. I have never hunted the area, a guy I work with has, says lots of private/BLM land all tossed around together, I am going to buy the GPS hunting map SD card for the Garmin this should allow us to stay safe and out of the way of angry outfitters and such.
Have any of you hunted the area? What can a guy expect for quality?
What is the forest service ground like and is it worth hunting?

You will be hard pressed to find huntable public ground.
Most of the BLM land in that area is worthless.
The ground that isn' worthless looked like a pumpkin patch with all the huntets on it.
Won't be going back to that area!

Last year there was too much snow. That forced us lower to the east. Saw hundreds and hundreds of both deer and antelope but they were all on private property!

We were leaning toward units 30 & 32 west and south of Kaycee, we are going to call the game warden and ask about ranchers which allow doe hunting for deer and antelope, hoping to squeeze in a buck somewhere along the way.
The guy I work with had a deal with a landowner to shoot does for free and pay $200 a day to hunt bucks! I might track this guy down.

The game department is great for information, they will email you a list of every landowner that allows hunting on their property. Then you just call and ask the landowner to find out what their fee is. I would recommend just applying for the region Y tag for bucks $326 and buying the doe tag on top of that, $48 I believe. Region Y was a guaranteed draw last year, but means nothing for this coming year. The biggest thing for my trip was buying the landowner GPS chip, I would have been lost without it. There is also good info on the Wyoming website as far as walk in hunting areas. Good luck on your hunt.

If you decide on region C pm me and I will go into more detail for you.

Good advise here. I haven't that area, but the chip is a must. Also check out the walk in areas.

Dont know alot about the eastern side of the state. Depending on what you are hunting...I liked the Riverton and Lander area. Dubois has a lot of mix of animals. Beware of grizzlies. It is true about the bears in the northwest corner. When you fire a shot it is like ringing a dinner bell for them and they will come!

I spoke with the biologist over there, good thing, he said that the forest service ground is so high in elevation that the muledeer are all migrated out before the season opens! So we will be hunting some low land blm and looking for permission to hunt private ground in region C.

Post by: cryfowl on February 10, 2014, 10:38:56 PM: I went in '11. I hunted unit 17. Not a lot of public land but I bought the landowner chip for my gps and it showed me all the blm and state land. Worth every cent. I had 3 antelope by the end of day one. My buddy got his the second day. Got greedy and went to unit 22 for a few more Does. Ended up getting a ticket for driving down a road. Just FYI, just because the road is shown as public on your maps and gps, doesn't mean it's not private. The road I was on was 20 miles long and connected two highways. First 9 miles were public, next five were private then the rest public again. Game Warden was sitting at Mile post 9.1 with his ticket book and by the number of non-residents I saw in his book of contacts, he wrote a lot of tickets. It was an overall excellent trip and I'd recommend it to anyone. Just be careful of where you are at.

Post by: GUscottie on February 12, 2014, 11:28:52 PM: From the research I've done: that area of Wyoming near Kaycee is great and chock full of antelope. The downside, most are on private land. Some will grant permission, but a lot want a fee.

I personally don't hunt east of the Big Horns for deer or Antelope. The best thing I've purchased for my out of state hunting has been the Wyoming GPS with private/public land ownership. Call a gamie for the area. Also, private property and wilderness is NOT marked on the ground (on GPS it will be) so you are responsible, in Wyoming, for knowing where you are.

I can give you advice based on what you want: quality, quantity or a bit of both...Are you looking at drawing yearly? Are you ok with every 3-4 or is max points ok? There are a few tags that are great for both deer and antelope.

Unit 20 for antelope is a gimme for the tag. There are goats there, but I don't know how the unit has them dispersed throughout. I know a lot of units that butt up to the east side of the bighorns have lots of goats, but they're all on private land. 20 is on the south end of the bighorns and I think this may be partly the case, but there is a lot of BLM land there. If you have more specific questions, PM me and I'll try to get you in the right direction if you draw R.
