Title: Speer Gold dot hollow point
Post by: Duckwacker on January 24, 2014, 01:53:17 PM: I bought a box of 180gr .40 cal gold dot hollow points yesterday so I could reload some 10mm . Normally before I get started I'll spot check some bullets for weight concinnity I started with five and the first one was a half grain light the second was 1.5grs. heavy the third was dead on the fourth was 1.75 light so i weighted all 100. The heaviest was dead 2 1/4 grs.heavy the lightest was 1 3/4 . I've always used hornady for everything from .380 to .454 never had more than 3/4 of a gr. + or - normally they are only .5 + - has anyone had this problem or does anyone even check? Looks like I'll stay with hornady when I can find them. I expected allot better quality from Speer. :bash:

I would just Load them and shoot them. I hae weighed individual rifle bullets and found that slight inconsistencies didn't have a determinants affe ct on longer range accuracy.

That's what I did. They'll be fine for target practice. I was gonna use them for hunting. I'll see how they group. All of my .454 hunting loads I weigh all of them and pick out all the ones right on 240gr. and use the rest for target . I guess I'm too picky.

Post by: luteai on January 25, 2014, 10:34:42 AM: No such thing as to picky for handloading. Rolling your own is a very personal sport. I'm not picky with pistol ammo, but my hunting loads are O.C.D. picky. Keep doing it the way that works for you and enjoy the sport.

Post by: hillbilli on January 26, 2014, 03:50:00 PM: yes they may vary a little in weight, but it is not a 600yd match bullet. of all the pistol hollowpoints I have tested.. its the one of the best, and the only design I ever tested in .357 mag that I like or would recommend for deer. (exp. to about .55, good penetration)

Post by: Duckwacker on January 27, 2014, 01:33:48 PM: I was impressed with the performance. My buddy shot a deer last year with a 124gr 9mm factory load from his breatta 92 fs it went 15 feet and fell over. I figured the10mm would do great. Hopefully I'll get to try them on a deer this year.

Yet in the handgun loads you will not gain anything or notice anything between those weights. I ran them in my 454 and they shot good but they did not open as well as the xtp bullets.

Xtp's all I've ever loaded everyone's out of them in .40 cal.

4 Grains is a bigger difference then I have seen especially in the more premium grade bullets. It is normal to see a +/- 1 grain difference or so but I haven't seen a 4 grain difference. It won't make a difference in shooting them unless you are trying to obtain a certain velocity or something.

That's what I thought was strange I wouldn't expect that from Speer.

Post by: JackOfAllTrades on January 28, 2014, 10:07:33 PM: I pour my own target bullets to +-1gn to shoot at 50yds looking for -2" groups at that distance from a 5" barreled 1911. I don't think that +-2gns is a big issue for a hunting or self defense bullet in hand gun calibers at normal shooting disances. You won't notice the difference until you're shooting out past 75yds.
