alright here he is, this is by far the biggest blacktail i've ever seen. now i'm not sure if the pics are gonna show the true mass to this guy but its unreal. he was shot out of packwood area, and the locals all said they've never seen a blacktail that big come out of there. the worst thing is i wasnt there for it, i got sick on wensday and couldnt go, little did i know they were gonna come back with this hog. anyways i guess he was followin this doe in some old growth and my uncle stumbled upon him at 30yrds! well i thought you guys would like to see this buck, still cant believe how big he is
-
For the love of God, WAPITIHUNTER is going insane. He's got "excessive emoticon syndrome" (EES). This condition is fatal if photos are not posted within 24 hours of the first excessive emoticon posting. I suggest you find your camera and save this guy before he loses his mind!
-
Thats what dreams are made of. Thanks for posting them.
-
After seeing that i am now checking myself into the mental hospital. That is freaking insane.
That is the freaking buck of 10 lifetimes. CONGRATULATIONS X 100!!!!!!!!!!!

-
Sweet Mother...that was worth the wait!! I'm insanely envious. What a fine buck!!
-
HOUNDHUNTER THATS A PIG. NICE JOB ,. J
-
thats definetly a monster blacktail wow thats a nice buck
-
WOW!!! What a PIG. I heard of another one last year very similar that was a clean 4 - same area. Spent four years in east Lewis County area and always wondered were B&C and P&Y draws the eastern line for Blacktails?
Great, great Blacktail.
-
PLEASE GET HIM OFFICALLY SCORED! that buck is amazing. He needs to be in BC!
-
ya im not sure if he'll be considered a cascade or columbian because hes in packwood so i dont know if bc will take him
-
Washington — Beginning at the Washington-British Columbia border, the boundary line runs south along the west boundary of North Cascades National Park to the range line between R10E and R11E, Willamette Meridian, which is then followed directly south to its intersection with the township line between T18N and T17N, which is then followed westward until it connects with the north border of Mt. Rainier National Park, then along the north, west and south park boundaries until it intersects with the range line between R9E and R10E, Willamette Meridian, which is then followed directly south to the Columbia River near Cook.
:dunno:
-
HOLY $HIT!!!!!!! That's a monster!!!!! Congrats to whomever harvested that buck!!!!!! :yike:
That's exactly what I thought :o
-
so would the b/c border be the pacific crest trail?
the b/c book does not offer a cascade blacktail listing...maybe the washington book, but not boone.
-
I have hunted nothing but blacktails my whole life and have never seen anything like that. Whoever shot it should quit hunting because nothing else will ever live up to that deer. what a giant
-
Wow...that's how babies are made my friends! Congrats that's the biggest blacktail I have seen come out of Washington!
-
After reading the BC boundaries i looks like the pacific crest trail is pretty much the line. I sure hope it is considered a blacktail by BC. it would be great for our state if a monster like this was inducted.
-
That is an absolute pig. If you want a rack bigger than that your going to have to start hunting muley's now cuz it's likely to be awhile before one like that comes along. CONGRATS!!! I'd love to hear what that measures, you should definitely get together with bow4elk and put a tape to it.
-
Geeeeezzzz that thing is a pig. Can't believe the mass on that guy.
-
   Holy ....! That thing is a TOOOOAAAAD! Congrats to your uncle.
-
Jeez...thats a beautiful deer!
I cant even imagine a BT like that...u boys know the scores...that isnt a contender for state record placement?? :dunno:
-
Man O Man!!!!!! Awesome buck. That is what keeps die hard brush rats going. There are bucks like that roaming, but not many. When I first saw that buck it reminded me of the characteristics of the deer of another area not too awful far away.
Congrats. That buck is big enough that my buddy the lurker might even post.
-
Dang! What a hog. Definitely one of the biggest Ive ever seen. Thats a true "monster"!!
MS

Holy crap :yike: Would like to see the score on that hog
-
Holy SHAT!!! :yike:
Mass I tell ya, it's all about the mass.
I've never seen another blacktail I'd rather have on the wall.
-
I tell you what , I was spot on with my guess. 155 gross. That thing is an absolute monster! You just dont understand till you actually hold the horns! All the mass on this thing is un real! Ounce in a lifetime buck! Hell probably net in the mid 140's maybee pushing 150.
-
WOW!!! That is a incredible B.T. He is the largest Ive seen since the state record in 2006. Probably going to score pretty close. Congrats on a awesome deer of a 100 lifetimes. ;)
-
What an incredible buck you got there. I can't get enought of that mass on our Mountain blacktails compared to those skinny-necked, long-tined blacktails they got down South. I'm with Bucklucky; I think he's gonna be in that 150 range. Awesome, Awesome deer!!!!
-
I did put a real tape on him last night , he grossed 155 3/8 , netted 143 4/8. Hes a stud for sure!! Very impressive mass!
-
Hey Charlie...can you take a few more pics of him? Love to see some different angles.
-
160" looking buck!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hey Bucklucky, how many inches of mass that that toad have???
-
Wow that is a huge buck! I believe the line is the Klickatat River but I've also heard the Crest Trail is.
Congradulations!
-
WOW! INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
-
Nice looking buck! Congrats!!
-
Very nice! Great Job!
-
Wow! :o
-
Put a tape on him and tell us the green score
-
I did put a real tape on him last night , he grossed 155 3/8 , netted 143 4/8. Hes a stud for sure!! Very impressive mass!
Bucklucky taped him TheHunt.
-
He had 42 1/2 inches of mass!
-
:yike:
-
Unbelievable buck. That is a buck that most blacktail hunters don't even dream about! Congrats!
-
That's a STUD buck....awesome, thanks for posting.
-
I think that is a benchleg but at any rate... Holy *censored* Batman!! That is one awesome buck.
-
Dude.....that is a whopper buck. Wish i could "stumble" across one like that.
Think that thing could have some Muley/benchleg in him?
-
Bench Buck.
-
Holy crap that is on fat MF :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike:
-
eh if they were cross bred in there you'd be seeing alot more bigger deer coming out of there, from where he was shot at i'd say no hes not cross
-
I've never laid eyes on a Blacktail with that kind of mass... Regardless of what he is...he's a great buck!
-
Why is it called a "bench buck"? or "bench leg"?
-
Bench bucks are blacktails with some muley genetics.
-
Why is it called a "bench buck"? or "bench leg"?
They tend to be big bodies which makes there legs appear to be shorter than nomal, having the appearance of a bench with short legs. So then Bench Leg bucks alternate meaning would be short legged buck.
Not really though, They just appear to be short legged due to there rotund body.
-
Most mass on a blacktail that I have ever seen!!! I always marvel at a rack that has the length, width, and MASS like that one . And whoever tagged that one should not quit hunting, they should thank the Lord for their good fortune and never stop hunting....
-
Thank you so much for posting that monster buck! terrific job, perhaps there is hope for the rest of us mortals.
-
Very Nice :o Thanks for the pics. You better have that one measured for a state record.
-
That there is one of them Old School balcktails that used to get killed back in the 40's and 50's that all our grandfathers seemed to kill ;)
-
I just got an e-mail from the guy that shot this buck, all this time I've been drooling over this buck and I didn't even realize it's a friend of mine that shot it. He hunts very hard and is well deserving of a buck of that caliber. As far as it being a Bench Buck, he told me were he shot it and it's not a bench buck.
He may as well throw in the towel on blacktails, I'm pretty sure he's peaked on this one. ;)

OK folks, I confess, it was my buck. Thanks for all kind comments. My wife says it is going to my head, but I have been trying for a buck like this for 30 years. My nephew (Houndhunter) thought the old dog had used up all his tricks, but I guess I had one more up my sleeve. I just turned 50 so this was a nice birthday present. I butchered him last night, BIG DEER! Thanks again.
-
Outstanding Silvertip!!!!
I think a new avitar is coming. Did you get any field photos? Did you take any pics with a film camera?
-
Dude you shot my buck... Thats o.k I will let it slide just bring it by my place and all will be forgiven. :chuckle: Really thou that is a nice buck
-
Silvertip-
I'm sure you've still got a few more tricks. You can't hunt blacktail for 30 years and not learn a thing or two. Congrats on an excellent buck.
-
Every time I look at this buck it just gets bigger and more awesome. What a buck!!!!!!
-
I think it would go to anyone's head after killing a buck like that! Congratulations on the buck of a lifetime!
-
I can't believe how modest you are. I would have lost the cape on that thing because I would have drove around town for a week with the tail gate down showing it off. :) What mass, it is incredible still love looking at that deer. Gives me somethin to shoot for. Yeah I know it would be a helluva long shot :)
-
U D Man was it late rifle or bow.
-
What a buck. Glad you posted those pictures and shared them with us. That's got to be the biggest blacktail rack I have ever seen. My partner and I got some nice blacktails this year. His was a 5 X 5 and until I saw yours, his was the largest I had seen. I'll have to email him about yours.
-
 congrats Silvertip what a toad
-
any idea on the score of this MONSTER? I'm guessing 185+- huge buck would like to know more about this
-

Go back and read through the post , I scored it for him. I think its on the 2nd page.
-
Absolutely, hands down, no question the most impressive blacktail I have ever seen. I can only hope to have an encounter with a buck like that during season.
-

Amazing!!!! :yike:

I shot this buck on the second day of late buck with my rifle. I am trying to post pictures, hope this works.

Holy Crap look at that mass!!! Sweet buck!!!

Great pictures!
-
Those are awesome pictures....Nice to see a big blacktail. Just noticed your location too, I grew up in Montesano. Great little town.
-
heck of a buck!
-
Nice buck. What unit was that big boy taken out of?
-
That is an incredible black tail!
-
This buck was taken in the South Ranier Unit between Packwood and Randle. He was with a doe in the timber. I couldn't see his face, just one side of the rack and his chest. I knew he was a nice buck when I fired, but was pretty surprised by his mass when I found him. It was about 1:30 pm when I got him, and my hunting partner and I had him packed to the truck just as it got dark. He looked real nice in the back of the pick-up! I plan on taking him to the sportmans show in Puyallup if anyone wants to take a look...
-
I can't believe I missed this thread before. I can't wait for the Sportsman's show to see this in person. Congrats on an awesome buck.
-
 Thats a whale of a deer, if thats not a record in antler size than it has to be a record in body weight. :yike:
-
thats is deffinently a nice buck its to bad he cant be scored as a true blacktail
-
For the love of Pete! How bout some details??
-
HOG!!!!!! ;)
-
thats is deffinently a nice buck its to bad he cant be scored as a true blacktail
I'm pretty sure he falls within the Blacktail boundary for BC, what makes you think it can't be scored as a Blacktail? I know several years ago the boundary was East of where the buck was killed, I guess it could have changed but I don't think so.

This is from the Boone & Crockett site:
Washington — Beginning at the Washington-British Columbia border, the boundary line runs south along the west boundary of North Cascades National Park to the range line between R10E and R11E, Willamette Meridian, which is then followed directly south to its intersection with the township line between T18N and T17N, which is then followed westward until it connects with the north border of Mt. Rainier National Park, then along the north, west and south park boundaries until it intersects with the range line between R9E and R10E, Willamette Meridian, which is then followed directly south to the Columbia River near Cook.
I put the pertinent part in bold. The buck, if killed in the South Rainier unit west of Packwood, is definitely scored as a blacktail according to the boundary given. Just for reference, SR 123 that runs to the north off of highway 12 east of Packwood, is about 1.5 miles east of the range line between 9 & 10.

Thanks for data, that's exactly what I remembered...I'm not sure why folks are assuming its a bench buck?

-
nice buck!!
that thing is huge(:
-
well sorry to bne wrong about it but last i remembered it couldnt be scored as a true blacktail, but aparently it can be.
-
big buck :IBCOOL:
-
Its definately in the boundry! Glad to see it is cause it deserves a spot in the book!
-
This buck officially scored 143 3/8 net at the Sportmans Show. It fell into the Columbian blacktail category and definitely made the book. The gross score was 153. There was a nice symmetrical blacktail there that was taken near Ashford that scored 143 7/8, so I took second place. No matter how big your buck is or fish is..there is always someone who got one bigger!
-
Thanks for letting us know the score. What a great buck!
-
Sivertip... I too had my Muley scored at the Sportsman show. While I was there I ask about the big Blacktail from Packwood and the guy knew exactly what I was talking about. He went over and got your rack for me to see. VERY impessive! The mass on the right side is incredible. While your rack was on the table in front of me. With my Muley rack next to yours. I noticed something that got me to thinking about an interesting question. My Muley rack is also a 5x4. By coincidence, The right side of my rack is dominant like yours. The left side was just a little weaker, just like yours. Then to top it all off, the same tine on the left side forks at the top, just like yours. My buck scored 139 7/8's. Not nearly as much mass as yours. I shot my buck in Lincoln county north of Davenport out in the wheat fields. Maybe 250 miles away. I relize that this is a very long shot, but because of the simularities in the racks(almost indentical) except for mass, could these two bucks be somehow geniticaly related? I honestly don't think so, but I have that question. I took a picture of both racks side by side with my cell phone but I have to firgure out how to get that to my e-mail so I can try and post it here. I sware on my mothers grave stone that I am not making this up. Lets hear what everybody else thinks... As soon as I can get a pcture posted I will :dunno:
-
Aren't ALL mule/blacktailed deer genetically related somehow, if you go back far enough?
-
GrainfedMuley, that is interesting that your buck was so similar. I have taken another buck in this same area (Randle) with a similar antler configuration to the one I got this year, except for the mass. I would like to see your pictures, sounds like a nice one. I actually hunted just a hair west of Davenport last year with my son. It sure is a lot different hunting wheat fields from the big timber around Packwood and Randle!!!
Just for fun I attached some pictures of my 2007 blactail and my kid. This was just outside of Packwood. The buck was 19 inches wide but just a 2 pt. Pretty country but a long ways from the road.
-
beautiful pics silvertip....got some good genes up in that country.

nope, stop posting top secret scenery pics :chuckle:
-
Aren't ALL mule/blacktailed deer genetically related somehow, if you go back far enough?
Yes, the Columbian blacktail is a cousin of the Mule Deer. Technically, it is classified as a sub-specie of mule deer.
-
other than the fog, I wish I could say it looked familiar :chuckle:
-
The 5x5 buck I took with a bow in 2007 in Clallam county looks similar to the packwood buck however my deer has 5 inch eye guards. The green score was 142 5/8 and dry score is 137 5/8 official Pope and Young. State biologist agree that blacktail blood lines have been mixed with muley lines in eastern washington, however some are still dominant in western washington. The eye guards are a dominant gene in horn mass in western washington blacktails as for eastern blacktails width is the dominant feature.
-

Yes, the Columbian blacktail is a cousin of the Mule Deer. Technically, it is classified as a sub-specie of mule deer.
Actually the mule deer has been genetically determined to be a sub-species due to the cross breeding of the white tail and black tail. This came out a few years ago when they started looking closely at the DNA from all of these species.

Right. I think I read that in a book by Dr. Valerius Geist. Smart guy.
-
The Columbian Blacktail Deer
By Dan Gibson
For many years the Columbian Blacktail Deer has been considered a subspecies of the Mule deer, however recent DNA testing has proven this not to be the case. In Valerius Geist's informative book Mule Deer Country he explains that by testing the mitochondrial DNA (the mothers DNA ) of the three species (blacktail, whitetail and mule deer), researchers have now determined that it was the mating of Whitetail does and Blacktail buck's that gave rise to the Mule deer and not the opposite as was once suspected.
It is now believed that millions of years ago the Whitetail deer expanded its range down the east coast of the United States, across Mexico, and then back up the West coast, where it eventually evolved into the Blacktail Deer. This may help to explain the strong resemblance in appearance and psychological characteristics between the two. Thousands of years later as the recently evolved Blacktail's range spread eastward and the Whitehall's range again expanded westward, the two deer again met. At this point the Blacktail bucks, displaced the Whitetail bucks, and bred the Whitetail does. Researches now believe that it is this hybridization that produced what is now know as the Muledeer.
-
Yep that's the book I've got (Mule Deer Country.) I'll have to read it again, it's been a while. Interesting stuff, thanks for posting that.
-
I've actually gotten in some pretty heated discussions over the subject. Sorry to jack the thread.
-
Not sure if this is one of the deer mentioned but it was at the show this year.
-
yup, had a hard time recongnizing the horns
-
I always suspected that mule deer were a lesser and genetically inferior subspecies to the majestic blacktail! By the way, sorry Houndhunter...wasn't that Mt. Hood in the background?
-
thought it was mt baker :dunno:
-
This is Mt. Baker.
-
im taken the sd card outa your camera next time we go huntin :chuckle:
-
all I can say is WOW.
