This year was the first year in 9 years we did not get our deer from 654. The weather was to nice to push them down.

Way to many people and bad weather in there this year. its only going to get worse with pay for access in other areas.

I've never not killed a deer in the mashed. Could take elk in there too but it's not worth the circus of elm season. I elk hunting elsewhere

There are critters in there but there's more anti-hunter private property owners and hard hit public access.

It all depends on what part of the mashel unit, I grew up Huntn it and still hunt it. Elk numbers are pretty bad unless you get a permit for Hancock, and you gotta buy a pass to even get in the drawing, Elbe town use to be great, but the free range cattle and big cats have the numbers so low its sickening, Ashford side is a Damn warzone, especially during elk season.... good luck

only hunted in the pack forest while in the mashel unit. its close and normally not many hunters, not a ton of animals but there are some in there.

i get nervous about where you can and cannot hunt with all the private land so i stick to where i know I'm allowed to be.  :dunno:

The public lands have turned to crap the last few years. Lots of farm poaching going on. Found four bull elk skulls on the side of the road with antlers cut off not during season a few years ago.Public lands are hit extremely hard. Most elk hang on private or Hancock. Hancock as everyone knows is good but only a few get to hunt it. And deer on Hancock is good but hear everyone say not what is was a few years ago.
And to sum it all up I just don't see what I used to up there.
Hear is a pick on private land of an elk with an arrow hanging out. I believe in June. No archery season since September. Seems kind of odd to me.

I dont know about you guys but ive seen some serious movement in there. You'd be surprised if you got out of your rigs and put some boots on the mountains.

It funny. Never been in the rig hunting that unit. All the areas I've gone to were walk in. Still not as much activity as some people claim.
You might be seeing migratory elk coming from the park if your scouting it now.  come hunting season they will be back in the park.

i dont hunt from a rig, like i said i grew up huntn the elbe hills, from elbe town to scott turner to the old homestead to ashford.... it isnt even close to what it use to be, my dad hunted ever since he started huntn, back when the end of scott tuner turn to a little one lane half arse road over the top..... the big cats have taken their toll along with bobcats, you get over to the holioday hills side and there is a guy that ranges his cows up there, and the poaching from the back of a few of the farmers places is crazy, just go look at all the differant quad trails that are cut up into there and i aint talkn about trails going around the upper gate or elbe town, these come straight up out of holiday hills and north of elbe town, one comes out of the bottom of the old homestead right up to the 1270rd.... there are still a few deer and elk up there, but nothing like it use to be, not even close
