Title: shotshell size for yotes
Post by: actionshooter on November 16, 2008, 07:03:56 PM
Over here on the wet side I sometimes pack my M1 super 90 for yotes b/c of the thick brush.
I am curious what other guys are using for shells and what the effective ranges are? If I'm in more open places (I have permission at a couple of farms that only want scatterguns) I use 00 buck and for tight quarters I use #4 buck but I haven't scored with that load yet and I'm not sure how effective that load will be?  :dunno:

I really like 3" t, it puts out a great pattern and hits pretty hard. I have even seen pics of a coyote that was shot at 100yd's and was hit with the gold bb and he was rolling in the pic. :yike:

#4, copper plated, 3" from a full choke.

Of the handfull of 'yote DVD's I've seen they all have recommended #4 w/ a full choke. I haven't taken many with a shotgun, but it sure folds 'em up quick! Not much need to go any larger, IMO.

#4 buck.  I tried a box of Dead Coyote, but couldn't stomach the thought of spending $3 every time I pulled the trigger.  I won't shoot a coyote past 50 yards when using a shotgun.  I will take a shotgun alone only to a stand that offers shots under that distance.  If I can see past 50 yards but think I will have multiples in shotgun range, I will take a rifle and a shotgun.  If I am being lazy and not really caring about making sure what I see ends up dead, I will take a rifle only.  My philosophy is that shooting a coyote past 50 yards with a shotgun takes as much time and effort as using a rifle, so I lose the advantage of what a shotgun brings to the table.  FWIW I would shorten that range to 40 yards max if using bb's.

I have killed most of my coyotes with 12 gauge  2 3/4 inch #4 buck. Shot taken at 40 yards or less. Never had one keep running. I have used Dead Coyote loads in 3 inch but they are pricey. With those I would a little farther but not past 50 or so. If I am pulling the trigger there shouldnt be any doubts about the range.

3'' #4 buck is what I use as well. 12ga full choke. Kills them dead. I did try double ought a few times, but its messy to say the least.
