Title: I just have to get this off my chest.
Post by: Curly on February 07, 2014, 09:57:43 AM
 :bash:

Something that drives me crazy and happens all the time when I read discussions about optics.

I constantly see people incorrectly referring to the power of a variable scope like this:  3x9x40  or 4x12x50

Do guys that type it out like that also say it like they type it?  Do they say: 3 by 9 by 40?  or 4 by 12 by 50?   :dunno:

Come on guys, that "x" is just shortcut for the word "by".

The correct way to type it is 3-9 X 40 or 4-12 X 50.  Don't use an X where a hyphen is needed.  It is a variable power scope of 3 to 9 power with a 40 mm objective.

:sry: Sorry for the rant.  And I realize I should have just let it go.  But maybe someone will get some benefit by this rant and stop incorrectly referring to their variable power scope.

I'f I'm looking at a deer....lets say it is a 5x5 with my 9x12x50 do I count the eye guards as a point? Also, if I do, is it an 8pt or a 4x4 with eye guards?

I'm so consfused.

We don't cout eye guards or brow tines here in the West.  Leave that to those East coast "hunters".  :chuckle:

OK, all joking aside, the OP makes a good point.  Using the correct terminology does indeed improve our understanding of technical topics.  For less experienced marksmen, this can be very important.  Think of all the technical topics that are often misunderstood (ballistics in ammunition, or the difference between horsepower and torque).

I'm not 100% sure but I think they changed it to 9&3 after airbags came around and people were breaking their arms across their foreheads. :dunno:
A buddy ended up with a good lump and an imprint of his wedding ring in his forehead after his air bags deployed in an accident. It has been 15 years since I took drivers ed though.

I was taught 3 and 9 because the airbag had more chance of break in your wrists at 10 and 2. I usually drive at 12 and burger. Sometimes 10. though sometimes I drive 12 and 10x42. If road hunting Its usually none on the wheel and all on my 4x12-50. Or 4 2 12 buy56 rarely see or hear a heard of true spikes including eye guards.

Better write a letter to all those scope manufacturers so the technical aspect of your "by" issue can get solved.   :chuckle:

Start with the one's who use the 3x9x40.
Then you can hit up the ones who use 3-9x40.
Then you can do the thank you letters to the 3 by 9 by 40 manufacturers.  Which one's are they anyways?   :chuckle:

:dunno:
I can take a picture at a different angle if needed.

Dang.  Here is more proof (sort of) that Burris uses that nomenclature on their scopes:

Note that they did use the X and dash (X-) on most of the labels when they were describing the variable power.  I take it that the "x" means "power" the way they are trying to use it instead of "by" like I've been taught.

So the 3-9x40 scope they are using 3x-9x-40 which they are saying "three power to nine power by 40 mm" instead of what I would normally do which is drop the word "power" and simply shorten it to "three to nine by forty";  (the power and mm are understood and not really necessary to use shortcut for saying).

I got something to get off my chest too. I cannot stand when people hold the steering wheel at 9 and 3 , I mean come on people it has been 10 and 2 since the dark ages. How hard can it be. I thought this would go well in the "pettiest rant possible" thread.   :chuckle:   :sry: carry on

Hey!  Start a new thread for your petty rant about 10 and 2.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I knew I'd take some heat for the rant.  But hey, I've bit my tongue for years regarding the topic and my tongue was really starting to hurt so I thought I'd mention it.

I'm glad everyone can have some fun with it. :)

10 and 2?  i thought they changed that training recently in drivers ed or something???  i'll have to ask my teen sis-in-law again just for clarity?
I'm not 100% sure but I think they changed it to 9&3 after airbags came around and people were breaking their arms across their foreheads. :dunno:
A buddy ended up with a good lump and an imprint of his wedding ring in his forehead after his air bags deployed in an accident. It has been 15 years since I took drivers ed though.

I actually use about 4 and 8 myself. Was shown it by an officer during a class when they had us drive an obstacle course with their vehicles. If I'm turning, I can bring the 4 hand all the way around to about 7 (and vice versa) before my leg gets in the way. If at 10 and 2, I lose a couple hours on my turn.  :chuckle:

Since we're all sharing, I have a really hard time with folks tooting down the highway in the left lane... it makes me daydream about becoming a state trooper.

I had to return to the beginning...to figure out this recent topic....and then this reply cracked me up

lol. Bunched panties alert.  :yike:

and yes the xxx confuses me I am expecting something different from xxx....whereas numeral-numeralxnumeral means something totally different. :)

fyi my scope is 3-9x40

3 to 9 bye 40.  Like goodbye?  Not.

3 to 9 by 40.

Since we are talking about being precise and all........

Well, if we refer to our truck as a 4x4, then as far as I know it means 4 by 4 :dunno:........so Burris might have something there :chuckle:
