Title: .375 h&h ammo choice???
Post by: TeacherMan on February 09, 2014, 11:22:45 PM: I'm setting my .375 h&h in Ruger #1 for hunting in Alaska (caribou, moose, grizz). I know I want a .300 grain load. Thinking possible Barnes. I want ammo I can buy over the counter.

Ideas?

Side note: I put a 4-12x40 Leupold on the rifle. My hunting area up north is very open... I like the 300 grain because of the stopping power on bears.

A quality 270gr bullets would be exellent also if shots are going to be a little longer. Speed makes up for mass at standard hunting distances with the H&H. I've shot 4 or 5 Elk with the H&H and 2 bear. All were with the 300gr Hornady BTSP, accept for one bear and I did him with a 270gr Hornady at about 35 yards. The H&H flat kills stuff!

There's the 260gr Accubond also.

Post by: BULLBLASTER on February 10, 2014, 08:36:02 AM: I killed my elk this year with a 270 Hornady interlock. I shot the gun a total of 4 times... 2 at the range one at the elk and one other it worked well. Ive seen that load take out numerous elk... but no experience on anything bigger

:tup: It' hard to argue with the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw!

Personally I would go Remington Premier or Federal Premium ammo with the Swift A Frame. Partition + bonded core = dead stuff! :tup:

It is not a long range caliber so why put a long range scope on it? A lesser magnified scope will give you a better field of view at shorter distances and may serve you better.There are plenty of great bullets for this classic caliber. I love the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw from previous experience but know the usual common loads work great too. The Barnes TSX, Nosler Partition, and Swift A-Frame are all proven rounds for soft bullets in the caliber. Start with what ever seems right then try others, if needed, until you find one that works best for you. Then let us know what happens.

Or he can put Alaskan quick detach rings on the Ruger and have the best of both worlds. That way he can use open sights in the thick cover and when the shot presents itself at longer range, he can install scope and have same POA that he had sighting in scope. This is what I am doing on my 375 Ruger Guide gun. Also I know one person that has this system on his Ruger #1 375 H&H and has taken an elk at 500yds. with a 300gr. Sierra Game King bullet. He installed scope and dialed in MOA and shot a bull elk.

Sound like you need to start reloading. That way you can tailor your load to your gun and use whatever bullet you like.

Input the 4-12 on there for two reason, one I had an extra 4-12 in my safe and a rifle that didn't have a scope lol. Second, main reason, I'm using it really as a secondary gun based off of my 6x6. I installed a gun boot in my back rack so I have a spare on me. Or for anyone at camp. I normally hunt with a .338RUM and it has a 4-12. Love that scope size, use to it. Truthfully best chance that gun has to see action is heading into or out of our hunting area. 60 miles of nasty muddy trail 12 hrs ea way! I'd most likely even use the 1/2 window of the 6x6 as a rest. The gun is heavy! Do I'm not looking at it being a fast quick fire rifle. With these things said last caribou waszat 356yds in stuff wind. Another reason for heavy bullet and larger scope. I grew up using a Leupold 6.5-20, I like big scopes lol...

Yes, with the right bullet and load, it can and will reach out there!
