Title: Muzzle loaders legal in WA?
Post by: HawkenBob on November 17, 2008, 04:20:34 PM
Lets form a list of all in lines that are washington legal. Ive been curious about this myself. And have thought about buying a more modern style weapon.

The T/C guns are my first choice, but dont seem to have any they manufacture that are Wash legal? The ones that are look to be out of production.
Thompson Firehawk (Out of prod)
Thompson BlackDiamond (Out of prod)
Thompson Thunderhawk (Out of prod)
Knight Bighorn

Add manf and model of inline.

Ihave a T/C Thunderhawk in 54 and Blackdiamond in 50. Glad I got em when I did. All the catalogs I get have about nothing legal anymore.

Afriend of mine just bought a Knight Wolverine thats perfectly legal. Got it at Sportco for around $150. Joe's had them on sale for around the same. Seems like a decent quality gun and he says its a good shooter.

Knight Disc Extreme, 52 CAL
Knight Rifles modified the Bolt ( Its Called "the Western Kit") to make it legal in WA and exposing the Cap to the Elements They do it for FREE!!!! It takes the old #11, Muskets or can have 209 if you change the Bolt back.

Its the New .52 Caliber and It is sweet!!  I Upgraded from a .50 Bighorn to .52 for the long range. My family hunts in Iowa where muzzle loaders are like Modern rifles out here on the west side. They can have scopes and my cousin swears he hits 300 yds with 18 inches hold over.  I can say that I have hit the 200 yd target at Clark County GC with my peep sights but I can hardly see the Dam target.  I will let any one come shoot this thing so they can see the difference of the Calibers!!!  I really liked my Bighorn but now it just sits in the Safe......

That is interesting. So you believe the range is increased that much? Accuracy would seem to be good too. I'll take a look at that rifle. Right now I shoot and old TC thunderhawk. Very reliable and very accurate with the right load.  In washington we cannot use a 209 primer. Must use either a regular cap or a musket cap. Just another dumb rule but still a rule.

Ive seen a couple of bolt action style inline's that have had a 1/4 inch hole drilled in the bolt face to expose the cap to the elements but I think it's a fine line.

Id go with a black diamond T/C  seen a couple at Joes lately

I shoot a T/C thunderhawk, thus the name.

The local gun shops around here have a Traditions that is a break open action.  I believe it is called a pursuit western addition, don't hold me to that.  Has anybody else heard of this or used yet.  I guess there new to the market. :dunno:

On a side note, anyone thinking of purchasing a new ML should wait until the new rules come out.........I have a feeling they are going to change some ML rules.  Although, I doubt they will make more restrictions..........you never know. :dunno:

If it is a break open action, I don't see how it could be legal.  It doesn't seem like you would be able to use a #11 or musket cap and how would the nipple be exposed to the elements?

From the picture on there website, there looks to be an exposed hole.  My step-dad has already looked into these.  Just want somebody to give feedback before pulling the trigger on a new M/L.  Still don't know if I could give up the trusty thunderhawk though.

traditions makes a break open and bolt action that's legal in wash. Not sure how good of guns they are but they look good. Does anyone have one? Would like to hear some feed back.   Also waiting for new regs

I have a traditions Thunder Bolt 50 cal. with bolt action.  There is about a 1/4" gap between the bolt and primer which allows it to be open to the elements.  Camo Synthetic with Nickel barrel.  I love the gun, never had any problems.  I would recommend it for Washington.

How do they make a break action rifle that does NOT use 209 primers?

they just put a nipple in the breech plug. and a open space about the size of
your little finger nail, above it so it exposed to the elements.

x2 on the T/C's.  Go stainless/composit if you are a wetsider.  You can still pick up NIB TC's (black diamond and system 1's) at a few brokers on the web.  I found a couple when I was looking for parts for my system 1.

Used TCs are prob OK too... so simple and hard to damage.

Most of the White inlines are legal in Washington, but good luck finding them since they are out of business, likely for good this time.

how about the winchester x150, I bought one 3-years ago seems like a nice gun but still haven't fired it yet. mostly bow hunt but used to muzzle hunt years ago with a t/c renegade. would appreciate anyones feedback that has had experience with this model of muzzleloader. I think I just need to change the nipple for #11 caps, and its legal.     can't tell you how many time bowhunting I have said could have killed him if I had a muzzleloader!

My cousin has one of these Tradition's Prusuit Northwest edition muzzle loader. And after this last weekend, he might be willing to sell it to you.  Since he bought it he has had nothing but problems with it not firing on the first shot.  :dunno: He has replaced the nipple on it. After several test fires that worked fine, he thought it was fixed.  Well needless to say. He had a big doe in his sights at thirty yards perfectly broadside and the gun didn't go off.  :bash: The sound of the hammer dropping was enough to make the deer run off without a follow up shot.  He  wasn't to happy with it and will be making a call to Traditions to let them know how he feels. >:( >:(

On another note. I have a T/C Black Diamond XR and love it. I've found that it shots good, and it's easy to clean. Kinda wish they still made them. I might have to go and find another one for the wife.

Just checked out the new Traditions Inline .50cal. at Four Corners. It has a notch cut above the nipple, to expose it to the elements. making it Legal in WA. Nipple is set up for #11 caps also. Nice Gun!! Reports are 2 1/2" groups at 200 yards, by 2 different guuys and 2 different guns. Good shooters out of the box! Just thought I`d pass the info along.

Thats the same gun that my cousin is having problems with. I don't know if he just got a bad gun from the start.  So far traditions hasn't been very helpful in resolving the issue.
