My dad passed away in January and haven't felt much like getting out. About two weeks ago I started putting out a few sets but not really putting much time into it. Heart just wasn't into doing much.
Just started feeling like doing something recently. I've been catching a small amount of fur but nothing worth a picture really.
Had a fairly good day today so I snapped a pic.
Two otter and two very dirty civets.

Sorry about your dad bruce...
-
Sorry to hear about your dad.
-
Also sorry to hear about your dad. I'm sure he'd want you back out after the fur. I have found skinning furs gives me a great time to reflect.
-
Sorry for your loss Bruce. Nice looking otts.
-
Very wet today as this cat can attest but I do like the stormy days.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0616_zpsabf8d555.jpg&hash=71eab9bfa86f2a1c2cf591f51318205155c7503b) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0616_zpsabf8d555.jpg.html)
-
Another awsome set,How heavy is that beaver?
-
Never weigh them. Skinned and fleshed but not stretched. I'm thinking a blanket.
Want to hear something funny. Caught it in an otter set baited with artificial fish. I think he just wandered into it. Dumb luck!
-
Very cool though.Fake fish huh Ill remember that, lol
-
Stormy weather= good trappin'

And that's why we call you the trap massa!

Boy pretty cats!!!
-
And that's why we call you the trap massa!
:yeah: Exactly!
-
Caught this fella today. Thought he was a real pretty one even though he is awful red.
Love this stormy weather even though my water traps were flooded out today.

4 soggy, dirty civets too. Hey, they pay the gas bill.

-
Nice, you're tearing up the cats!!!
-
-
Way to go Bruce!
-
love seeing the success photos...
-
Another pretty good day. Hope this nasty weather keeps up.
Not very good picture. Left to right
civet, rat, otter, otter, beaver, possum
Nice possum if there is such a thing. First one this year for me.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0623_zps502cae21.jpg&hash=637d1a08022ede51098b1421fb57f3fe3b9c8090) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0623_zps502cae21.jpg.html)
-
Man you're on a hot streak!
-
You the man Bruce.....That is a great catch. I must agree on the bad weather. the high water levels have actually helped me out.
-
I see my photography skills are lacking but anyway caught this small one today and of course more civets.
Good thing is I saw to cats today. One was keeping this one company and ran off when I drove up. The other I scared off a bait I had hung up. Of course I set a trap. So now I have to dream about them hoping they come back.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0625_zpsfc9263eb.jpg&hash=e5478f7f2c161735961f44aacef0c1ea05368920) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0625_zpsfc9263eb.jpg.html)
Maybe you'll notice all my civets are looking wet now. Reason: I had to change my kill method on them. I'm still using the CO2 but I had several come back to life and I had to regas them. Now after they are unconsious I pour some water in the trap for a few minutes as insurance against them recovering. I was wasting too much CO2 and they all have to be washed anyway.
-
Looks like your going get more money from civet cats than bobcats this year. Awesome.
-
Nice work Bruce :IBCOOL: Now you have some work :bash:
But maybe someone should show you how to use that CO2 stuff. I think I know the guy :hello:
JC
-
Caught one of the looky loos from yesterday plus another. Water sets have gone dead. Probably pick them up next time. They needed to be moved today but not enough time.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0627_zps56161580.jpg&hash=0c6725d25fcc126949c98e8f7545ab637ac8a9dc) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0627_zps56161580.jpg.html)
-
Next time I see you Bruce I'm skipping the pleasantries and diving straight into how you get all those cats in your cages! :chuckle:
-
Well, one of them I been waiting two weeks for it to go in. Been to the trap at least twice that I know of.
-
Seems like it would almost be better to skip nov and dec as far as cats save a lot of gas
-
Seems like it would almost be better to skip nov and dec as far as cats save a lot of gas
Where is the fun in that? :) :)
-
I love keeping up with Humpies Trapping threads. He always has good info and pictures.
-
So when are you gonna head up to darrington and show me what I'm doing wrong?
-
Caught another nice tom today, small beaver.
There is truth to waiting until the late season IMO. It's breeding season and the toms are moving. No time to hunt so they are hungry too.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0629_zps4bb6a941.jpg&hash=493d5b8267e2ab24e160e6581aa2c118af99ba7e) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0629_zps4bb6a941.jpg.html)
-

Here's something to try. Nice big piece of beaver in the trap, smaller one outside. Give them a taste! If the small piece gets eaten do not replace it. Make them go in the trap for seconds.
Another thing fresh is not as good as stinky. Two week old beaver is easier for them to find your set especially if you have a piece outside. The wind blows the smell around. Kind of a long distance call.
-
Then set a bunch of civet traps in the area to lure them in.. :IBCOOL:
-
Doesn't any bait outside the trap have to be 30 feet away or further? I got a ticket last year for having a goose carcass hanging 15 foot from my trap as an attractor. Where would you recommend putting the extra piece of beaver?
-

Not if it is covered. I should have been a little clearer. I hide the bait ouside the trap with evergreen boughs. Wind can still blow through it and spread the smell around but not visible to flying raptors. That being said a bait 30 feet from the trap up in a tree, the cat will find your trap if it gets that close.
You are right though a sight bait that close would be illegal
One other thing if that goose was domestic I think you got screwed. I read that to be legal although I still would not recomend it.
-
The goose was wild. I still think we got screwed. It was tied to a small about half way up for that very reason..cover. He saw it as "visible to flying raptors." Do you know why a feather blowing in the wind is not considered a non edible part of a game animal. Also, blood for that matter..?
-
Why would it matter with a cage trap anyways. I can understand with a leghold, but a cage trap, so what, open the door and fly away, if they even went in.
-
It could be emotionally damaging to the poor bird. Ha! It's washington..who knows?
-

Letter of the law and all that. Things have changed but the wording of the law has not.

Beautiful day today and I remembered my camera so took a few pics.
Can you see him?

 I think your on pace to get far more cats this year than last. Both civets and bobs. Very nice!
-
Great photos! Thanks for sharing!
-
Are you really driving around in the mountains in the landscape photos, did not think that was possible in Washington state with all logging roads gated :bash: up north here every road is gated,we'll let me make that clearer, EVERY ROAD IS GATED.
Ok I'm done venting now, nice catch Bruce
-
Bruce, are you using Co2 without a cap over the trap? If so that is why you are having problems with it. You need an end cap for that size pvc pipe with a hose attachment in the center of it. It doesn't have to be super tight just enough to keep most of the co2 in the trap.
-

Without the cap it kills 90% and it knocks them all out quick.
Co2 is heavier then air. I think the problem is wind. If there is air flow across the top of the trap.
I tried the cap and to tell the truth a little bit of water after they are unconsious is a lot faster. Only takes a little over a quart after they are knocked out, then wait a couple minutes. Straight CO2 takes at least 15 minutes to be sure. Usually less but who likes to take a chance on a skunk coming back to life in the PU.
Don't tell me it doesn't take that long either. I had a few, in traps thankfully, that looked completely dead and after riding in the PU for a couple hours were sticking their nose out the door sniffing around.
-
you can do it without getting sprayed?
-
Yes, you can do it without getting sprayed. striped skunks maybe not so much....
-
I drown one once and same thing, didn't wait long enough and when I got home he was looking at me. :)

31 so far this year and haven't been sprayed yet. The glands are always bulging which is good.

I only have 12. Too nice a weather the last two days but they say rain is coming.
-
Bad weather has started.

-
That looks likes a pretty good size rat. He might be worth more than the beaver with the way the auctions have been going. Nice.
-
Not a bad days check ya got their. The muddy creeks and high water seem to put the otters right in my cages.
-
bruce,
whats going on all this rainy weather and no cats?
-
bruce,
whats going on all this rainy weather and no cats?
No kidding, it's been a whole week! :chuckle:
-
I bet he's got a whole pile of them, he just didn't want to get his camera wet.
-
Well, I caught a cat today but pretty soggy so I didn't take a picture. It pulled some mud in the trap so I had to give it a bath. Soaked cats ain't much to look at. Couldn't look at one water set, just too much of a good thing.
Have to say on the cats I think there are some that just refuse to go in a cage. I think I am dealing with a few of them now. Might be best to just move the traps but I been doing a little experimenting with them and drawing a blank I might add.
Up to 43 civets. :chuckle: :IBCOOL:
-
i knew you had something there!!!!
43 cevits that alot of cevits!!!!!!!!!
-
Caught these between the storms.

I had one trap washed away. Hope I can find it after the water goes down. Learn from my mistake, always tie your trap up to something solid.
-
Another otter today, up to 15 now. Cat traps are not producing. I think I am going to start pulling them in in preperation for taking saturday off for the winter Rendezvous.

Way to bruce
-
Hey Bruce what does an average civet stretch to, I caught a few and they stretched between 16 and 18 inches, big-small ?
Nice Otter
-
Those would be large ones. I'm guessing males. Most of mine are 14 to 16 not including the tail of course.
If you send to NAFA they do not grade them except #1s and damaged so it doesn't really matter the size.
-
Nice job!! Is there still an individual quota on otters?
-
Nice job!! Is there still an individual quota on otters?
Only on the East side of the Cascades. 12 a yr here.
-
Caught what I thought was a pretty cat today. Kind of frosty tinge to its fur. Not pale like an eastside cat but about as good as it gets around here. A tom but not overly big.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0649_zps19e02b48.jpg&hash=2003d01fad4deee4b91838c5e240f2b69f081f87) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0649_zps19e02b48.jpg.html)
Caught the beavers in otter sets. One of the beavers kept an otter out so a mild disapointment. I was going to pull there today but couldn't bring myself to pull it with fresh otter sign all around the spot.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy137%2Fhumptulips%2FDSCN0648_zpsa301cafa.jpg&hash=dd26dcb1bd5e8892852091c529f52d6c92168369) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/humptulips/media/DSCN0648_zpsa301cafa.jpg.html)
I'm not sure if the calico cat knows how dangerous the bobcat would be to her. She sure seemed interested.
-
Last run on the East Fork Humptulips. Heck of a note when you have to tow a trailer to pick up traps. Would have been two trips without it.

Thats a pretty colored cat!
-
Great looking cats this year!
-
I caught a bug at the Winter Rendezvous. Finally started feeling like doing something end of last week and set a few traps out Friday and Saturday. They produced these today.

Just that easy! :chuckle: I'm going to use the rag in mouth idea.
-
I HEARD OF "THE CAT MAN OF THE HOH" BUT I THINK YOU BRUCE ARE "THE CAT MAN OF THE HUMPTULIPS". NICE JOB!!! HOW MANY CAT TRAPS YOU RUNNING TO CATCH THAT MANY?
-
13 traps out, now 11.
-
THAT IS A TON OF WORK.
-
I HAD AS MANY AS 28 OUT THIS YEAR AND IT ABOUT KILLED ME. I HAVE A FULL TIME JOB AND THAT MANY WAS LIKE HAVING A SECOND JOB, AND IT WASN'T EVEN FUN SO I HAD TO SCALE BACK. I WAS LOOKING AT GETTING SOME NEW WIRE AT KLUBERTANZ AND THE SHIPPING IS ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE WIRE. I AM LOOKING AT THICKER GAUGE WIRE AND VINYL COATED THIS TIME. I AM TRYING TO ELIMINATE SOME OF THE ROD I'VE BEEN PUTTING IN MY BIG WOODS
-
Caught this guy today. I know he doesn't look like much because he is so wet but I think he will turn out pretty spotty.
I caught him on Quinault Ridge which I have avoided trapping because of the fear of getting my traps snowed in. There was snow until two days ago but it all went with the rain. I haven't trapped up there for easily 15 years even though it is close to home.

Thats a pretty cat Hump.

Very nice! That cat had my name on him though :chuckle:
I was planning to make a trap line through there for the last few weeks of season but I have been having problems with my truck all month so last week I pulled all my traps and called it good for the year.
Looks like decent color for around here too. Not quite as red as all the other ones you've gotten this year.

It's an adult tom but a little on the small side.
