I am planning on trying to harvest a High Country mulie this fall with my muzzle loader. This will be my first high country hunt here. I have done a few in Montana but there is no weapon designation during there besides archery equipment. Just curious if anyone has tried this in the past.

I've hiked my muzzy (Knight Bighorn) in to some beautiful roadless places! My kit includes patches for cleaning, a "quickdraw" filled with a lot of extra musket caps (noise dampened by spare patches), 5 quickdraws filled with powder, 5-6 extra bullets and sabots, a small vial of solvent, a breech plug wrench (yes, heavy). I keep all this in a plastic Ziploc bag in my "hip bag". I bring a small roll of electrician's black tape to seal the muzzle if things get rainy.
Not very traditional, all of this, but it works. Good luck on your hunt! :)

Me and a friend did that one year. You should have solitude for sure, but I wouldn't expect to see deer out in the open like they would be in early September.
My buddy ended up taking this bear on that trip at 15 yards. Very cool experience.

I was worried about taking my muzzleloader a couple years back. My buddy kept telling me he had never taken a shot at over a 100 yards. I was finding that hard to believe in the country that we were hunting. But ended up with a nice 4x4 with eye guards. Shot him at 100 yards on the second day of the high hunt. this past season I bought the multi tag and took the rifle. I ended up shooting a bear under a 100 yards. So if I would have had the muzzleloader it would have been dead with that. I would not hesitated hunting with it! :twocents:

Solitude is hard to find these days. There is alot of people hiking in.

There seems to be some confusion here. Are you talking the high hunt with your muzzleloader or hunting the high country(as stated) during the muzzleloader season?

:dunno: if its high buck hunting in September then i would take the muzzle loader . we went a few years back. Packed in on horse back had a great time of it didnt see any other hunters the week we were there saw lots of does a few bear.We did manage to get a pair of nice 4 x4 s out on the trip .recall the longest shot was about 80+ yards up hill but dont let it stop you hunting muzzle loader is just to much fun all around :twocents:

To clear up the confusion. I am planning on Hinting the High Hunt with my Muzzy. I was just looking for some feedback from past hunters who have done this. Thank you all for the response. I am sticking to the plan and packing my T/C in. I have shot deer and elk out to 180+ yds. I looking forward to September.
I shot this buck at 43 steps 2 years ago.

Nice buck. Chances are you will be shooting more than 43 steps in the High hunt.
