“Zero Tolerance” policies are out of control
This post is continually updated as new information is discovered.
Contact your legislators about this growing national abuse of "Zero Tolerance" policies that defy rational common sense.
People need to wake up to the intimidation and traumatizing of children via the abuses of "Zero Tolerance" policies in our schools. The list of examples is growing. People with anti-gun agendas, ideologies, paranoia, and irrational reactions regarding anything related to guns or arrows appear to be taking advantage of these policies. This may be why some states are proposing laws to prevent these types of "Zero Tolerance" abuses on our children.
Children may fall victim to this type of “Zero Tolerance” abuse if they do something that falls into one of these categories (to name a few):
1) Brandishing a pastry or other food which is partially consumed in such a way that the remnant resembles a gun;
2) Possession of a toy gun which is two inches or less;
3) Possession of a toy gun made of plastic snap together building blocks;
4) Using a finger or hand to simulate a gun;
5) Vocalizing imaginary firearms or munitions;
6) Wearing a T-shirt that supports Second Amendment rights;
7) Drawing a picture of, or possessing an image of, a firearm; or
8.) Using a pencil, pen or other writing utensil to simulate a firearm.
When are we going to demand that our children NOT be subjected to these obvious abuses of “Zero Tolerance” policies? These are abuses that appear to support anti-gun agendas and/or the school’s administration or staff’s personal ideologies.
ALL freedom loving Americans should be extremely concerned about these abuses of misdirected and misapplied policy.
The situation has become so dire that legislation is necessary to stop it. We should consider similar legislation in Washington.

"Zero Tolerance" policies and many of the people enforcing them are out of control. Anti-gun agendas and ideologies are obviously being applied through these policies. That's why some states are proposing laws to prevent these abuses on our children. This thread, "“Zero Tolerance” policies are out of control", was started to expose just how much these policies are being abused, misdirected, and misapplied. These abuses are happening in Washington and around the country as is clearly shown by the examples collected so far.

Yep, the liberal, progressive, democrat, pussification of our country.
-
I see schools and people trying to give all children and equal opportunity to grow up to be good little girls. When I get together with the fathers of other boys my son's age I am always in charge of the "unsafe and irresponsible" activities. I was saddened to discover how many of those fathers had never spent a night in a tent. WTF?
-
Our 8 year old daughter wears shirts with hunting logos on them to school, on a regular basis. One in particular, an archery sweatshirt, pink camo, with "Shoot Like a Girl" printed on it. So far, no issues but I'd venture a guess that it's because it's an archery hunting theme, instead of a rifle hunting theme...
In the event that anything is ever said, I'll contact every single news agency that I can find, making as much noise as possible. So far, she's had the same teacher for kindergarten and 1st grade, a female teacher who grew up hunting, and a second grade male teacher, who's retired military and loves that she shoots a bow! I'm sure a time will come when she'll run into a liberally minded teacher who will take offense...

:twocents:
The irrational application of "Zero Tolerance" policies is a very serious matter. Traumatizing our children by demonizing anything remotely associated with guns by punishing them and destroying their records for being normal kids (i.e. see the examples given) serves no purpose other than to advance very obvious anti-gun agendas. The examples given are most likely just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
The people of this country and our legislators need to wake up to this obvious abuse and bring an end to it. Some states are already taking steps to protect their children from this growing issue; Washington should do the same.
-
Listen the only thing that will set them straight is a lawsuit. Damages for ruining a kids chance to college , trauma etc.
-
My boy goes to school next year and I am sure I will be in the principals office often. :bash: :bash: My kids are both lifetime members of the NRA and both well versed in firearms and firearm safety. With that being said....my boy is very vocal and very into guns...this will surely lead to problems in our public school system. Maybe I will just break the ice on the first day and send him to school in his NRA shirt. :chuckle:

So, now we need legislation to make pop-tart shaped guns legal??? What a crock! :bash:
Glad we are spending time and money trying to take care of the major issues facing our country :bash: :bash:
Next there will be legislation requiring the registration of pop-tart guns! :chuckle: :bash:
Then there will be petitions to get those taken and also limit the amount of toasters we can own because if we have too many it could get dangerous.
-
Remember, the purpose of this thread is to expose the irrational abuse and total lack of common sense in the application of "Zero Tolerance" policies by some teachers and school adminstrators. Legislation like the "pop-tart" bill is necessary because some teachers and school administrators have continued with this abuse (i.e. see all of the examples given). Without legislation to protect our children from this insanity, your child just might be expelled or suspended from school for chewing a pastry into the shape of a gun, pointing their finger at someone and saying "Pow", etc. They also may have a very detrimental entry into their permanent school record. "Zero Tolerance" policies are being abused across the nation and in Washington state; the abuses need to be stopped before more children are traumatized by such idiocy. It appears legislation is the only way to do this.
-
Two of my boys go to public school and both wear camo and what not to school. I wrote a letter to my 9yos teacher last year to excuse him from school for hunting season. We have never had any issues yet and I plan not to have any. My girls boy goes to school on JBLM and we have not had any issue with him either.
-
No, In my area school administrators are voted in or out by the voters. It's these liberal people who vote in these liberal school administrators. We don't need more unenforceable laws that will be ignored by the current crop of liberals in education. :twocents:

:twocents:
It's primarily some teachers, principles, school administrators and other school staff that make pop-tarts chewed in to the shape of guns, Lego guns, index fingers with thumbs-up (gun form), a piece of paper shaped like a gun etc. into an extreme big deal and decide to suspend/expel children for such horrifying "weapons-related" infractions which include getting the police involved in some cases.
The point is that anti-gun zealots that are in some school systems are abusing the "Zero Tolerance" policies to traumatize children into believing anything related to guns is "BAD". Read the examples given; they are very real. Other states are proposing laws to curb this very obvious abuse of "Zero Tolerance" policies because the situation is out of control. Abuse and misapplication of "Zero Tolerance" policies needs to be reined-in, or they will continue to be abused and misapplied.
Traumatizing children and ruining their future with an unwarranted weapons-related mark on their record resulting from abuse and misapplication of "Zero Tolerance" policies is wrong.
If not legislation, then what will curb the abuse and misapplication of "Zero Tolerance" policies?

Some may choose to joke about this, but it's not a joking matter.
The parents of these kids have to hire attorneys, at their own expense, to fight against these ludicrous charges that result in suspension or expulsion from school and a tarnished record.
Imagine your kid getting suspended for displaying a "Level 2 lookalike firearm" and the lookalike firearm was his finger. "Level 2 lookalike firearm" is now in his record. This is not a joke; it just happened in Columbus, OH. This will be another example added to the list of examples.

This abuse will continue to happen until laws are put in place to stop it.
Examples of “Zero Tolerance” policies out of control:
Note: In some cases, the charges may have been withdrawn. However, the child has already been traumatized by the abuse of the “Zero Tolerance” policies.
If you know of more examples, post them here. It’s important to expose these abuses for all to see.

Ordinary tools, such as pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches, are “weapons” and so a Chicago school was correct to punish a teacher who brought them to class for a visual aid, according to a new court decision.
The ruling from a federal court in Illinois technically dismissed a lawsuit brought on behalf of teacher Douglas Bartlett. He had been suspended without pay for four days “on the grounds that his use of the tools as visual aids endangered his students, despite the fact that all potentially hazardous items were kept out of the students’ reach.”
Where ELSE but Obamaville

Judge says ordinary tools actually are 'weapons'
Affirms punishment against teacher who brought wrenches for visual aid

WND reported a year ago when the case was filed – and the school’s actions were called political correctness run amok.
At the time, John Whitehead, of the Rutherford Institute, which brought the case on behalf of Bartlett, said, “Education truly suffers when school administrators exhibit such poor judgment and common sense, especially when it comes to their zealous misapplication of misguided zero tolerance policies. However, what makes this case stand out from the rest is that this latest victim of zero tolerance policies run amok happens to be a veteran school teacher.”
Bartlett had 17 years of experience in the classroom. While teaching a second grade class, the curriculum required a “tool discussion.”

My 17yr old son has several shirts with NRA and guns on them. One is a Springfield Armory shirt with an AR15 on the back of it. I warned him that he might get in trouble and he said "well Grandpa told me that if I get kicked out of school for this shirt he will take me hunting until they let me back in school" lol
He wears at least two of them every week since school started and has never had a problem until about two weeks ago when a teacher finally told him to put a jacket over his Springfield Armory shirt. He laughed, walked away and said "this is my favorite shirt, call my Grandpa and tell him I can't wear it". He is still wearing the shirt to school and the teacher hasn't said a word since.
With the way things are today I am quite surprised he hasn't been kicked out but so far he has got away with it.

This is how it should be in a free country. Too bad some kids in other schools are suspended for wearing NRA t-shirts, chewing a pop-tart into the shape of a gun, or pointing their finger and saying "pow" or "bang" to name a few incidents of Zero-Tolerance abuse.
After reading this... I think there is an agenda being pushed. :dunno: Yikes
The point of this thread is to show people that there is an AGENDA BEING PUSHED. It's an ANTI-GUN AGENDA. Zero-Tolerance policies have obviously been misapplied and abused around the country in ways that support anti-gun agendas and ideologies. In many cases, kids are being traumatized and their futures ruined because of irrational applications of Zero-Tolerance policies. Some states are now proposing legislation to protect our kids from this extreme idiocy. Read the examples of what has been happening around the country.

If you want people of any age to be responsible about guns, especially kids, you have to teach them about guns. The uses, the danger and how to behave with them. To most kids, and too many adults, guns are an unknown evil, not to be talked about, and if you bring them up, BAM, you're in trouble. Educate, educate, educate.
Zero tolerance has become a cop out for mediocre administrators in many fields. Take each case on it's merits and make a plan to deal with it. This stuff doesn't "fix" anything, just kicks it down the road.
-
The zero tolerance is teaching kids that guns are evil, and dangerous and they should be afraid of them. This is how they are going change the public's opinion on guns.
See what AG Holder says about it.

YOU will be called into the office until you either leave or they send CPS on YOU. THEY can't not "indoctrinate" those who can think on there feet!! As a parent, YOU have committed a crime in their eyes. You've taught your children and NOW they have to re-program them to fit the "norm".
:sry: but the truth does hurt at times.

When will this overzealous, anti-gun stupidity and abuse STOP?
This is a national issue that requires national attention.
Zero Tolerance policies are out of control and they are obviously being abused to support the agendas of those with anti-gun sentiments.
Some states are taking steps by enacting legislation to protect our children from the irrational application and abuse of zero-tolerance policies by some anti-gun zealots that may unfortunately hold positions as teachers or administrators in our schools.
If school policies, state or local laws, ordinances, or any rules and regulations "force" teachers and/or administrators to suspend, punish, publicly humiliate, indoctrinate, or otherwise intimidate and terrify children for:
1) Brandishing a pastry or other food which is partially consumed in such a way that the remnant resembles a gun;
2) Possession of a toy gun which is two inches or less;
3) Possession of a toy gun made of plastic snap together building blocks;
4) Using a finger or hand to simulate a gun;
5) Vocalizing imaginary firearms or munitions;
6) Wearing a T-shirt that supports Second Amendment rights;
7) Drawing a picture of, or possessing an image of, a firearm; or
8.) Using a pencil, pen or other writing utensil to simulate a firearm.
And now
9) Twirling a pencil with a pen cap on it that has the pocket clip bent outward,
then repeal and/or change those draconian rules and regulations that are being abused and misapplied.
Legislators and people with even the smallest amount of common sense must WAKE UP and put a STOP to this insane, irrational abuse.

It really is out of control.
I have no problem with a school having a zero-tolerance gun policy. To me, that means you cannot bring guns to school. Fine.
But what is beyond belief is when they treat NOT GUNS (paper, toys, etc) as though they WERE guns. It's just totally nonsensical.
Guns ARE dangerous, and kids should be taught a healthy and safe respect for that, at least.
But NOT guns are NOT guns. How this gets lost on anyone is truly baffling.

Zero-tolerance policies in schools may have zero point.
That's the conclusion of a recent report from the Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit center that studies justice policy. The report, titled, “A Generation Later: What We’ve Learned about Zero Tolerance in Schools,” looks at existing research to determine whether the get-tough policies for minor offenses are an effective way to keep schools safe.
The report finds that zero-tolerance policies, which the organization defines as “discipline policies that mandate suspension or expulsion of students for misconduct,” do not accomplish the intended goal of making schools safer, and may make schools more unsafe. The report recommends that schools begin moving away from these policies, which took root during the war on drugs in the 1990s and were broadened after school mass murders, including Columbine High School.
“The research findings and other data on zero tolerance suggest that these policies -– which have been in force for 25 years -– have no real benefit and significant adverse effects,” reads the report. “There’s growing consensus that the most effective schools reinforce positive behavior and respond to behavioral problems on a case-by-case basis.”
The idea behind zero-tolerance policies is to remove disruptive students from classrooms in order to make schools safer, but research shows no correlation between expulsions and safety, the report says. While zero-tolerance policies originally were intended to protect against extreme situations, like when students bring weapons to school, the policies in practice often punish students for significantly lesser offenses.
One area where zero-tolerance policies do succeed is in disproportionately affecting minority students, according to the report. The author of a previous study on zero tolerance told Education Week in 2011 that this may be due to “unconscious bias.”
“Why else would we see, for the same first-time offense, blacks receiving harsh punishments far more often than whites?” that study's author, Daniel Losen, asked.
The latest report concludes that many school districts are shifting away from zero tolerance. Earlier this school year, Broward County School District in Florida gained national attention after dropping zero-tolerance policies, even for lawbreaking students. Instead, administrators will keep troubled students in school and offer them counseling.
“Everybody recognizes right now that if we want to really find ways to close the achievement gap, we are really going to need to look at the huge number of kids being removed from school campuses who are not receiving any classroom time,” Michael Thompson, the director of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, told The New York Times, referring to Broward’s new approach.

"And nothing drives me up walls more than this."
Well not this specifically, but all the political nonsense. I do believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the American colony broke away from Britain because of stupid laws like this. Like the one kid that went to jail when he told the teacher he would not change his shirt. What he did was perfectly legal and the right thing to do, but I think (I don't know, I'm not an expert) that they had no right what so ever to take him to jail, making what they did completely unlawful. Just like in many countries back then (1700s I think) where you could get thrown in jail just for saying something against the king or even remotely close, and it might not be that bad yet, but I'll bet it could get there, but I hope not.
Here is the link to the incident referred to above.

Why not? Shouldn't our youth be well rounded and get views from both sides? Knowledge is king, and the more education they get, the better informed they will be when critically thinking.
My daughter goes to a public high school in Tacoma. She told me yesterday in one of her classes they were discussing famous people that had visited the school recently, the teacher told them Jay Inslee had been there last week. My daughter said she was one of three kids in the class who knew who he was.
Now, this may or may not surprise you. :dunno: My point is, the rest of the class has not been taught who he is, (your point exactly), but my daughter did because education in my family doesn't begin and end in the school. It's up to us as parents to educate them as much as the schools do. If your kids are not learning then it's as much your fault as the schools. Myself, I want my kids learning what is being taught by liberals, it gives them a better understanding of how they think.
Keep your friends close.......right?
There is no better way for my kids to understand exactly what I'm talking about than to go see it in action, live, everyday at school. ;)

:twocents:
We need more of this since the application and abuse of zero tolerance policies are obviously out of control. How about some mandatory Second Amendment education in our schools and for the anti-gun legislators in Washington State and in Washington D.C.? All people, including anti-gun legislators, need to know that if one Amendment in our Bill of rights is trashed, then all of them are meaningless; our rights and freedoms, won through great sacrifice, will be nothing but memories. If our rights and freedoms eventually disappear due to the incessant whittling away by "Liberal Progressives", maybe even they will regret their impassioned desire to "progress" away from the Constitution and Bill of Rights. However, if that happens, it will be too late for all of us.
Regardless of your political affiliation, please work very hard to ensure only legislators and other elected officials (i.e. Governor, etc.) that will support and defend our Constitution and Bill of Rights will be elected and/or remain in office. All others should not be in any position of power to control or regulate our lives. Get involved, VOTE, contribute your time, contribute financially; individuals DO make a difference. Our future depends on all freedom loving Americans to become engaged in the political process; sitting on the sidelines will only ensure more of our rights and freedoms will gradually disappear.

I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of the complaining about the school system that is endemic on this board comes from guys that didn't do well in school or were problems. They carry the grudge into their "adult" lives and spread their gospel of how it is onto their offspring.

I haven't been out of the public school system that long (graduated on 04). I remember my friends and I getting harassed about our wallet chains on almost a daily basis claiming they were classified as weapons. I asked to see this list of weapons that they kept referring to, when its was given to me all it said was "no weapons on school grounds", yeah it was that general. at which point I pulled a #2 pencil and a pair of scissors out of my pocket and said "there take these too then, they are dangerous weapons".
Needless to say we went around and around for a few weeks and finally they lost interest. but its been getting out of hand long before that.

Just to maintain the focus of this thread; it isn't about our schools it's about abuse of zero tolerance policies regarding guns, perceived weapons, perceived threats, etc. in schools around the country.
Children may fall victim to this type of “Zero Tolerance” abuse if they do something that falls into one of these categories (to name a few):
1) Brandishing a pastry or other food which is partially consumed in such a way that the remnant resembles a gun;
2) Possession of a toy gun which is two inches or less;
3) Possession of a toy gun made of plastic snap together building blocks;
4) Using a finger or hand to simulate a gun;
5) Vocalizing imaginary firearms or munitions;
6) Wearing a T-shirt that supports Second Amendment rights;
7) Drawing a picture of, or possessing an image of, a firearm; or
8.) Using a pencil, pen or other writing utensil to simulate a firearm.
9) Possessing a piece of paper cut or torn into a shape that may resemble a gun.
10) Possessing a Nerf dart.
Go back to the Examples of “Zero Tolerance” policies out of control on pages 1 and 2 in this thread to get a reminder of how out of control this abuse has become. Click on the links and read the stories to understand how children subjected to this idiocy are being indoctrinated, intimidated, and traumatized.
This thread was started to make people aware that this abuse of zero tolerance policies is happening in many schools around the country. The point is, don't think it can't happen in the schools your children are attending. Some states have introduced legislation to stop this abuse.

Perhaps those that do these things to our kids to impose their personal ideologies should be sued, reprimanded, receive disciplinary action, be removed from their position of power, and be forced to issue a public apology.
We need legislation to prevent these abuses, and to provide strong legal remedies when our kids are abused by such idiocy.

Some of the stories in this thread make me want to punch someone in the face with a brick!!
Full disclosure time: I'm not a Republican, or a Democrat, or a Liberal or a Libertarian or an Anarchist. I'm a cut-clean-to-the-bone Socialist, big time, 100%. That's just me. That's who I am. But even I in my absolute ultra-far to the Left Socialist mindset can see that this zero-tolerance bull%&$t is one of THE DUMBEST trends right now facing our youth in our schools. It throws logic and common sense right out the window and victimizes innocent kids and young adults. It's got to go! Further, Gun Laws should be and must be regulated at the State level, NOT at the Federal Government level, and if that happens and some super blue state (*cough* California) passes laws to strip people of their gun rights, then the solution is simple: MOVE OUT OF THAT STATE. The further away from The People that laws and enforcement moves, e.g. all the way up to the Federal Government, the further away from reality and what life is for a normal, every day citizen it becomes.
