My first shotgun, I am looking at the Mossberg that cabelas offers I think its around $600, anyone have this shotgun, and is it a good starter gun? Also whats the best choke for turkeys?

Good guns

Well I shoot an 835 and my wife shoots a 500 both are Mossberg and both 12ga. Great guns both of them. Don't think that I spent that much for both guns but That's ok.Chokes on the other hand are different, I use the factory choke tube in mine but the wife's has a Carlsons choke tube. There are a number of different choke tubes just find the one that shoots the best with the shells.

I also have the 835 and my wife shoots the 500 and both are great guns. I shoot the factory chokes.

I have an 835 also and it's harvested many a turkey with the factory choke.

Mossbergs are great turkey guns. I think you'll be happy. I have an 835 with the 20 inch barrel and it is a really good turkey gun. Mine patterned well with the factory choke, but even better with a Tru Glo strut stopper extreme (SSX).

Not sure what features are on the model you're looking at, but there are many 835s available in the $250-400 range.
Good luck!

I would recommend a remington 870. i use the same one for duck and trukey i just switch chokes... i use the super full turkey choke. :twocents:
Remington cost about $300 less than the mossberg

I have the Mossberg 835 as does one of my hunting partners. We both like them and have had no issues. He hunts turkey, ducks and geese with a simple choke change. Mine came with 4 factory chokes but for turkey I use a Carlson choke made for HM loads. If I were to buy another one it would be the 835 pump with the two barrels so I could shoot slugs as the shot barrel us over bored and you can not shoot slugs safely in it but I think that is why it patterns so well consistently!

My father bought me a Mossberg 500 for my first gun about 25 years ago for hunting and i have it. And to this day it shoots straiter every year! Great Turkey gun! Love Mossberg!!!!

My wife has an 835 and I just bought a thumbhole 835.Great guns. You might try Wholesale hunter, around 400$

$600 for a Mossberg turkey gun is ridiculous to me. I have a top of the line Rem 870 turkey gun that I paid less for, that I would say is considerably better :twocents: :twocents:

Like others have said that sounds spendy. My Remington 870 with a turkey choke hasn't failed me yet and was a lot cheaper. If your from Yakima area go look at bimart.
-
I have a fully set up turkey gun (Rem 870) for sale in the classifieds right now.

Spend the money if you like but there are less expensive lead delivery systems. Dead is dead, no matter how the lead got there.

Thanks everyone, all of you have been a big help

The real difference between the Remington and the mossberg is the safety.....if the price is anywhere near the same. buy the one that has the safety you prefer, nothing like putting in all the work of walking/scouting/set up/ calling and bringing in a huge ole tom.... and then forgetting to take off your safety......

I shoot a Benelli Nova. I have had it for 9 years.I consider it the best, most versatile gun for the money. Inexpensive and has killed birds...which is the point.
-
I have a moss berg factory xtrafull in my 835 and it throws a wicked pattern. If you can find one, they say that Stardot tubes that were sold at wally world 10 years ago are absolutely insane.
If you are thinking heavier than lead shot, look at Indian Creek, Pure Gold, or SumToy.

Whether $600 is a good price depends on which Mossberg it is. Pretty high for a 500 pump, but not for an auto loader. Mossberg makes good durable guns. I carried one in Iraq every day and never had a single problem with it.
