I'm looking to make my old shotgun look perdy again. But I am curious which one of these I should go with, what are the differences between Bluing, Cerakote, and Parkerizing? Thanks, Kyle
-
I got my old over under cerakoted this year and it looks awesome. I went with midnight blue and gorge custom coatings did a great job, ended up being about 100 bucks including shipping both ways
-
I've heard cerakote is a paint, is that true? Is it more durable than bluing? Anyone know what parkerizing is?. Thanks for reply, Kyle

Parkerizing is a finish applied through an acid bath. The military uses it on its guns (can't be applied to aluminum so not AR's, think WWII guns).
Cerakote is a baked on ceramic coating. It's been proven to be very tough.
Bluing is a generic term for several processes but basically they all leave a thin coat of oxide on the steel. It's not very rust resistant compared to the other two because it is a form of rust.

I've been contemplating sending my .300 RUM to these guys.

Cereakote is way more durable than bluing from my experience
-
So is cerakote impervious to moisture, as in is there any possibility of moisture getting under the coating and rusting from between the barrel and the coating ??
-
Cerakote it and be done with it.

Parkerizing also can not be applied to Stainless steel. On M1's & M14's the Gas cyl are stainless

I agree cerakote is more durable check out GH Coatings

I do not thing water can get under cerakote. Check out gorge custom coatings, they are a sight sponsor and did a great job on my gun.

Gorge Custom Coatings is the way to go. It is my cousin's business. I just got another rifle back from them and it's amazing! Melisa who is doing the coating is one of the most artistic people I know and she can do about anything you can dream up. They have good prices and quick turn around compared to a lot of the bigger shops. You will be happy if you use them.

Thanks for all the replies will definitely use them! :)
-
Anyone have contact information for them? If so that would be great!!

One of my rifles is the first on the gallery page.

So does cerakote look the closest to a blued gun? Or does parkerizing?
-
Cerakote is more of a textured finish.
-
What do you mean if you don't mind me asking :dunno:
-
Blued is just steel that has been colored. Why the cerakote is a finish added on top of the steel.
-
It would seem it would chip easily, rubbing against a tree or something out in the woods, No?
-
It's a pretty tuff finish. I will be putting them to work this year.
-
Cerakote is tough stuff! As soon as I get caught up on some bolt rifle projects , I'm going to have Gorge Custom do some AR stuff for me in Titanium and Burnt Bronze Cerakote. Actually a mix 60% Burnt Bronze & 40% Black. They said they could swing it, no problem.
-
Sorry to ask all these questions, just trying to gather as much information as possible before I go and spend lots of money.
-
No worries
-
I went with midnight blue and it almost looks like bluing, I put it through its paces this year and it still looks brand new.

Parkerizing is a milspec coating that is applied to ferrous steel. It does not look like bluing, it's more like a rough grey or black depending on whether it's Zinc or Mag phosphate.
Cerakote a has a midnight blue that is very dark and glossy and looks a lot like traditional blueing.
Hope this helps

:yike: Man those prices are as high as I have ever seen. My cousins shop will do a whole rifle and stock 1 color for 175.00 where that place wants 400! GCC is accredited and site sponsors
