Title: what stabilizer and why?
Post by: Mfowl on February 23, 2014, 11:13:12 PM: I am a novice archer looking to upgrade my bows components. I purchased a PSE rth packaged last March and though I like the bow itself the sight/rest and stabilizer are low end parts. I recently purchased a fall away rest (not installed yet) and am shopping for a new sight but I was wondering what do I (as a novice archer) stand to gain from an upgraded stabilizer? What does a long stabilizer do that a short won't? What's the benefit of a weight system? Thoughts, opinions, thanks!

Post by: biggfish on February 24, 2014, 01:32:28 AM: Field and stream did a wonder piece on this the say if your stabilizer isn't at least 6 inches its mostly just decoration. I have a 4.5 inch and it just holds my wrist strap till I finally replace it.

Post by: RadSav on February 24, 2014, 01:53:05 AM: There are a number of things a stabilizer upgrade would do. None of which ever really quiets the bow down though plenty of ad hype might say so. A good stabilizer helps balance the bow most of all. Done properly this helps to maintain good form all the way through the shot. A longer stabilizer will put more weight further from the pivot of the grip making it more difficult for minor form flaws to effect the shot in a big way. And some stabilizers do a reasonable job of managing bows with a small vibration hum.

One of the things I like about a longer stabilizer is the way I carry the bow. With my hand in the wrist sling my stabilizer tucks up against my arm and keeps the bow level as I walk. Saves in my muscle strain, saves the bow string from rubbing on the ground and/or my leg and it usually help keep my peep sight from getting bumped.

I prefer the Sims Modular style of stabilizer. But there are a bunch of good ones out there. Some like the Trophy Ridge are very well priced too. Stabilizers are best purchase from a well stocked Pro-Shop. Since their primary benefit is balance you should try a number of different weights, lengths and styles to see what feels best and balances best with your set-up. For me I want the top limb to pivot/fall slowly forward with four of the five arrows in my quiver.

With the Modular I can rearrange the weights to match just about any bow I have. My Truth2 Dark Horse takes a little more length so I use the longer Modular on that. Most of the others I use the standard Modular.

I also have a 12 inch doinker field stab for when im hiking a ton on my hunts and want to save some weight. I like to keep around 10-12 inched and some decent weight on the end seems like a good middle ground for me.

I use a Limbsaver X coil. I wanted something small so I wouldn't snag it on everything walking through the woods, but balance the bow. Now I can shoot my bow with an open grip and it wont fall forward or backward super fast and almost drop it.

The new modular is slightly different, but largely the same. I like them both. The new one does seem to absorb some higher frequency vibration the older did not.

I use the same one as D-Rock on my Truth2 blind bow. Only difference is I place the weights in a different configuration.

Ooops, I meant 25 & 30. Yeah, yeah that's it...25 & 30 yeah!

Since the first two were 8 and 10 it all averages out ethical, doesn't it? :chuckle: Five birds last year combined 178 yards would be 178 / 5 = 35.6 ;) Whew...I think I'm safe!

I test shot it along with several others and with my equipment sounded better and felt better with this one. I was very impressed and the price was not to bad. I had a longer doinker/limbsaver combo on my bow. The bow is more balanced now. I would recomend this to people looking for a shorter stabilizer
