I was looking at the youth elk permits and I am not familiar with most of the areas. Looks like some are pretty restrictive and others lots of private land. Any suggestions would be appreciated for a good hunt. Want to stay as close to the eastside as possible because of travel time issues. Also was wondering about the late Columbia plateau wma cow permits jan -mar. Anybody draw one of those? that would be real close. Any advice appreciated. Might be able to return favor with intel on diy idaho or montana hunting. I am putting in for my son who doesnt have any or max 1 or 2 in most categories so I dont think he has a great chance of drawing. Just want to put in for some stuff while he is still can draw the youth tag

Well, since they don't offer many youth elk hunts, none of them offer great odds- some are downright looooong odds. It makes it a little better that most kids never rack up that many points, but I know guys who have put their kids in since 6 or 7 yo, and they have 8-9pts. Better odds on antlerless regular hunts IMO.

The youth permits in Washington are a joke. :twocents:

Ok thanks for giving advice but are there some good hunts worth putting in for looking for ideas if odds suck that's ok We don't put in for lots of draws other than idaho me my son is too young just want ideas on something that's worth putting in for anyways thanks for the advice

Since youth licenses and permit applications are relatively inexpensive, I’d certainly apply. The ranch hunts (Silver Dollar, Blackrock, and Pine Mountain) are probably the best bets.

Assuming Eastern- I'd agree with Bob :yeah:. There were a couple new hunts last year, Dayton and Lick Creek, to consider in SE (know nothing other than on here).
Western they have only 4 to put in for.
North Bend- all private
Toledo- best chance to draw- decent area- some private - early August
Mud Flow cow & Mud flow bull - hard to draw but good-right after other hunts in same area-Late Nov.

Those eastern hunts are a crap shoot. The elk in those units can be here today and home tomorrow

Thanks appreciate the advice . Did some Internet looking on the ranch stuff 40 silver dollar etc looks like they sell permits too? Not interested in that but just curious how it works . Thanks for Toledo recommendation that time would be awesome wouldn't conflict with my elk huntn! Bob you said some private but regs said don't apply if you don't have access on Toledo . What do you think if a kid gets drawn could he find a place to hunt . Or need some access first before applying?

Yes. Part is farms. Near 1/2 is Weyerhaueser St. Helen's tree farm-BUT- fire closure is a real possibility in that time frame- and Weyco may require a entrance permit this year- from what I hear it is still up in the air.

IIRC- those ranches have a deal worked out so they can sell their own permits if they offer some up for general draws without any fee attached (as in the case of the youth tags)

I did a little more looking on the ranch hunts(old posts etc) and was some real mixed results. Anybodys kid draw one and how did it turn out? thanks,

My son had a tag last year. It is a crap shoot. We only got to hunt one day and we saw one bull and a few cows 20 Minutes before shooting hours. That was it. No other phone calls to come back. Talked to Tom many times, but he wasn't seeing any elk. I only heard of one tag being filled last year.
