Have any of you hunted both east and west side during the season?
Did you hunt more west than east or vice versa?
-
My buddy and I normally hunt Westside. Last year he drew multi and a goose prairie archery tag. We hunted hard and he passed about a dozen bulls trying to kill a big one knowing he still had time. Ended up killing a little 6x6 opening day of muzzy season on Westside.
-
I don't personally know a single guy that's drawn a Multi-Season Elk. Out of all the guys I'm around and hunt with.
-
My hunting partner drew the MS Elk last year and did a muzzy on the west and a rifle on the East. We both had MS deer tags, couple that with a good salmon run, some steelhead fishing and finishing up the bowfishing season. Too much going on to spend the money on the MS tags. We won't be doing it again.
Tag soup on elk, he got a deer last day of late archery.
-
The only advantage us archers have to justify the MS is the option to put into those hard to draw quality rifle tags..buglebuster, there were a few nice bulls in goose prairie, but a tough, silent hunt till after the storms! Hunt alot in the lil Bald area. :)
BH, actually quite of few MS elk drawn here in this area. Not worth tho cost with the archery elk season imho

Me too. I'm still waiting to draw one. 5pts this year, so decent chance. But, none of my hunting buddies have drawn either...yet.

Really? I've drawn (and declined it) twice, my buddy has drawn muti elk and deer at least 5 times. Almost everyone that I know has drawn it at least once. :dunno:
-
I drew ms elk in 2008. Not since.
-
For elk, I put in for east side draw tags (didn't draw any) and then hunted west side bulls.
-

I'm in the same boat, I have 6 points going into it this year I'm getting tired of not drawing that tag...
-
If they had everyone front the money for the tags we would all draw more often I bet.
-
I believe if wa was more like Montana, there would be more revenue for everyone involved but the game harvests would not suffer since only one animal is harvested (Legally). I'd pay my $182 every year just to be able to have all those options for all that hunting time. Burn me if you wish but instead of let's say 30000 applicants with only 2000 permits awarded the state would be receiving the 182 bucks for every one of the 30000. The math looks simple to me, and I'd be happy.
-
I drew the Elk in 2009, i shot a bull in the west side muzzy season that i usually hunt. Didn't hunt archery, or rifle.
I apply for it because i have 16 points (Quality and Bull). So i apply for the east side permits and hunt the west side if i don't draw.

28000 more that could hunt all three seasons would create more crowding.

:chuckle: we'd have three seasons all three days long....
-
I guess that means you'll have to get out of your truck to avoid the traffic.
-
The archery season is to early this year so I won't be putting in for anything but points. Next year is my year...
-
I've drawn the multi elk three times, but have never hunted east. Always hunted pretty local my whole life. Drew back to back '07 & '08. In '07 drew a Margaret rifle bull on top of it so didn't realy use or need it. In '08 I drew a late cow ontop of the the multi, again didn't need it or realy use it. In 2012 I drew it again and knocked my bull down on 2nd day of early archery. Again didn't realy need it or use it. I put in for it again though :) Bought the multi deer twice and ate it both times :bash: something about the multi tag that makes it too easy to let the little guys walk.
-
I'll draw it for sure this year. Should have done just ghost points not sure if I'll have much time to hunt with it :bash:
-
I drew one last year my second time putting in. No kill.
-
Do it so I can put in for eastside tags.
-
In 2013 there were 7,480 applications for 1,000 multi-season elk permits. The 2013 draw odds follow:

7 70 55.83%
6 230 45.13%
5 484 34.08%

:yeah: I have 6 as well and have not drawn it yet. Does anyone know when they are supposed to draw it this year?

:yeah: same with goat, sheep and moose!!
-

same for me, except wdfw hate me more, I have 19 points! Drew multi elk with 6 points last time, 3 this year. Absolutely love the multi elk tag.
-
7pts never drawn, my hunting partner draws every other year
-
I have drawn once (2nd year it was offered) and shot my elk (4x3) opening day of early archery season- my normal weapon type.
My wife drew it her 5th try, got a shot on a huge 5x5 on the wetside but ate the tag.
I apply every year, but would probably only hunt wetside- don't have time to learn the dry side.
-
Ive never drawn a MS elk..deer is a gimmie its underdrawn
No advantage to Archers? it is for me...I can chase bulls in sept with a bow Idont get one the muzzy season opens and then rifle you should be into elk if your chasing them in all 3 seasons
-
I normally hunt Westside archery or muzzy. If I draw multi season, I will buy an eastside archery tag and apply for the area I know very well. If I draw the tag, I wont buy the multi tag, if I don't I have until September to buy the multi tag. It's a good way to save $180.
-

The wife and I have max points and haven't drawn a multi-elk yet! It not only would allow us the opportunity to apply for better special archery permits, of which I have close to max points as well and never been drawn, it would allow us opportunities the general archery season just does not allow.
I really do not get how folks can apply and not take advantage of this opportunity when drawn. When you look at the statistics it should be a no brainer decision! 2012 Combined user general elk season success rates were only 9.8% While multi-season tag holder success was 40.4% (44% in general deer). It's a great opportunity to either increase the quality of your trophy or greatly increase your odds of filling a tag. I myself would definitely put both east and west side into play unless I tagged out early.
Would sure be nice if guys that know they aren't going to buy the tag would stop putting in for it. Maybe those of us with Bad Luck, could be a little less sucky one of these days.
-
Drawn a couple years ago. Hunted all eastside and killed a bull opening day of General Rifle. Hunted a few days of archery but it was 90 deg and wasn't even a little bit into it.
-
Gosh, I thought they would have drawn the MS permits by now.
-
Gosh, I thought they would have drawn the MS permits by now.
The deadline to buy applications is ten days away still. I bought mine, but I need to remember to submit it for the point option. The multi season elk tag is not one that I want to lose my points and then not buy it.
-
So when do they draw it Bobcat?
-
Do they have an option for points only on Multi Apps? I want the points, but not the tag this year.

Yes.

As long as you dont buy the ms permit then you will get a point.

That's not described anywhere that I'm aware of.
I believe that once you are drawn your points are reset to zero, regardless of whether or not you purchase the permit.
To be certain I would submit my application for points only.
-
Unless there has been a formal change i havent read about you cant just buy a pt for ms. Just buy the ms application like normal but dont purchase the ms tag if selected. Pt received.

correct. Once drawn, unless you put in for the points option, your number is reset
-
So when do they draw it Bobcat?
+1. Is the multi-season tag drawn before the application deadline for special permits? Or, asked another way, when does the multi-season tag get drawn??
-
Yeah there is a pt option for ms. No: 4999 deer & elk.
-

Nope. Once you draw the tag your points are zeroed. There is a points only option.

Results are announced officially at the end of April. they however ususally have them out mid month. I seem to remember getting results usually by the first week of turkey season.
My question is do you have to actually buy the tag before putting in for other draws? I have been drawn and always assumed that you had to actually buy the tag before putting in for additional draws or you were not able to put in for multiple seasons. For example applying for archery, muzzle loader and rifle tags. I was under the impression that if you did not buy the multi season tag you were limited to applying for one seasons draws.

Only 5 days left to get an application. They are available until Mar 31.

Is the cost of the MS deer tag being reduced this year?

Some find they are not in the financial position they thought they would be by the time the drawing is done. Others think they are "sticking it to the man" by screwing over their fellow blood brothers. Then they complain when the cost of general license and tags go up five bucks ;)
I understand the first one. Haven't ever understood the logic of the second.

Also heard this, but haven't seen it written. I think it was something like a reduced price if bought with something else, not bought separately. :dunno: I thought it was like a $40 drop.

I just got done searching the WDFW site and found nothing in print yet, all prices still the same.

Multi season deer tags and second deer tags are going to decrease in price, according to the 2014 proposals, which will be adopted by the WDFW Commission in a couple weeks.

I hear that! Living in ew our hunts are so limited that it isn't even worth going unless you get drawn for a special permit. Being close to the points to draw a big bull tag, I am forced to buy a ew elk tag to put in for it. I know several people who get drawn for it and don't purchase the tag. It's just a little frustrating. Come on multi elk!!!!!

So, if I am reading correctly. If you spend $117.50 on deer+elk+bear+cougar w/discounted small game license + 180 multi season for a total of $297.50, they are now subtracting $39 from that total for $258.50. Am I reading that correctly?

I didn't purchase mine last year either. Some people apply for hunts in other states and put a higher priority on those draws. I use the multi seasons here as bonus hunts if I don't draw the out of state hunts.

I love that they can't just mark down the price of the multi-season after identifying the situation, but rather do a mark down on the deer or elk combination of choice. The jack wagon that came up with this plan needs to be slapped upside the head.
if they would have made the multi-season $140-150 they would probably would sell more applications and fill the deer permits more readily.
Oh well. If you confuse the masses, it will leave less competition for me.

There were some threads a while back where a few guys said they do this to keep down the crowds of the 'not really into their methods'. They said they wanted 'their seasons' to only be guys that liked 'that method'. They were concerned that a guy that was into (example here) rifle hunting would get a multiseason, then go buy a cheapy bow and fling a dozen arrows and call it good. Then they would have to deal with an extra person in the archery season that they felt was likely to get in the way and would wound too many animals due to lack of proficiency. They said the $7 bought some good peace of mind.
-
I guess that makes sense, I understand why some would choose to do that. I wouldn't
To me it sounds kind of similar to anti-hunters buying applications for tags to water down the chances of a real hunter drawing the tag.
Again, to each their own. That definitely isn't my style though.
-
I dont think there is enough elk MS to really even have a noticable effect. I understand the issue of getting rifle guys who draw a MS tag never bow hunted and just go buy a bow. I see it in ID..the first week of archery is full of yahoos running around and by Sept 15 they are all gone and its just the "Archery" guys
-
:chuckle: are you saying that road hunting during early archery isn't a good idea?
Opening week in September is wild 'n' out with bear road hunters and people who lost their right to firearms
Then a few weeks later, it is quiet enough to hear a pin drop and you're only halfway through season.

Yeah but it a multi thread so bs is allowed.
-
I have said in other threads that I don't apply and won't apply for the multi season. Just for sake of numbers, say you get drawn for both then that is about $360 you are out if you buy both. I instead take that money and apply it to buying points in other states. I can still hunt my preferred method/weapon here if I want and eventually have a good chance at drawing good tags all over the west. I give as little money as possible to this state anymore. :twocents:
-
Bought multi elk application, checked today for the heck of it, doesn't even show "Draw Not Run Yet" .... What's up with that? :dunno:
-
It says that while they draw the names. So they must be running it. I know I'll be selected for elk. I mean I have two points so how could I not. :IBCOOL:
-
Anybody check today? :chuckle:

Lol draw not run
-
I just checked . Draw not run. :sry:
-
when i checked spring bear tag this year and it came up with a blank spot where the draw not run yet was suppose to be, then couple hrs later i checked again and it said draw not run yet. The very next day results were in. I think when they are doing the draw, is when it shows up blank then they verify they have it completed correctly and then post results so id guess youll get results probably tomorrow.

Tbob, if it makes you feel any better, you actually have one point. You get the point when you apply, before the drawing takes place. So next year, if you don't draw this year, you will have two.

I think the wife and I had six points each last year. Neither of us have been drawn yet. Not sure I'm buying that 3 points gives you a 50% chance. :chuckle: Then again I have max quality bull points and just shy of max bull points and haven't been drawn yet. So I'm just one of those super unlucky losers >:( Not sure why the wife hasn't drawn yet though...she's not nearly the loser I am in general.

Your wife gets all your luck!

I had the same luck as your wife on MS deer, but I have never drawn a real special permit though. 11 years and counting and I put in for everything I can. Damn draw odds! ;)

Sore winners!
My wife's first fish she ever caught was a 5 lb bass while we were crappie fishing.
The first buck she saw while she was deer hunting was a 130"+ class whitetail and she said it was too far :yike: and it was only 110 yards out :bash: :bash:
Her first time crab fishing from the dock she limited out on a bunch 7" dungeness.

Beginners luck. Just typical. My little sister's first buck and bull. At age 10 and 11 respectively. I'm just happy it was me there for the deer hunt! ;)

My wife hasn't been a beginner in a long time. But her first bear (second season hunting) was 450# :yike: First deer with a bow was 55 yards! I think she drew her quality bull tag with four points (10 or 12 less than me that year :bash:). However, we have both sucked the hind teat when it comes to Multi-Season Elk tags. Maybe this year will be the first time I get the one up on her :dunno: In another week we will find out! Though I can't help but think she will be laughing at me again this year >:(

Tell your little sister congrats. I adjusted her whitetail pic a little for you.

Thank you! That looks great. Will do!
Kahlen's now 12 and has three elk and five deer under her belt already. I killed my first elk at age 12, so I would say that she is doing the family name proud. She loves to hunt! :)
I called this yearling in for her to 15 yards in Margret this year. Came in from 100 yards out on a run and I was right over her shoulder. She drew the regular rifle cow tag with 3 points. Did I mention she has her mothers luck!? That's four special permits in 3 years. :)

Six years! That would suck. Good luck to him.
I'm sitting on six and have never drawn. I'm not very confident that I will draw this year either. :bash:

Man I'm going to feel super bad when I draw with my first ever permit of any kind application.. I'm feelin crazy lucky! I've helped a lot of old people this month.. Ha! No offense to the old people.. :-)
Seriously though, have any of you drawn with zero points? Well Bobcat said I actually get one point for this year so I guess I have one point technically...
-
I drew the very first year they offered it, with one point. Of course everyone who out in for it that year had one point also.

I know a lady that drew a quality bull muzzy tag the first year she applied. And that was only a few years ago. So anything can happen if you're one of those lucky types :P
I was REALLY positive the for the first ten years. And I helped poor, disabled, old people :chuckle: No offense to the monetarily deprived, wheel chair assisted, vision and/or hearing impaired, youth challenged adults.
