Title: Yeti Coolers?
Post by: herdbull33 on March 01, 2014, 10:13:45 PM
Thinking about purchasing one. I've heard a lot of good things about it but just wanted to see if someone has first hand experience? Thanks

You got a trip planned?  The coolers seem legit....but darn expensive.

I've got 3 of them.  This last elk season I put 3 blocks of ice in one and ran through elk camp.  When I came home I left the ice in as a test.  At 21 days I still had ice.  I ended the experiment there.  All this depends on how often you open the cooler of course.  I would suggest using block ice.  They do have enough insulation that they hold the temp well for a longer period of time.

I've heard they are the real deal, if you've got the $$$... Just don't have first hand experience to help ya out.

I have two, a 65 quart Tundra and a Roadie 20.  Great coolers.

I have two of them.  When Wholesale purchased Sportsman's they had a 50% off sale on anything with a Sportsman's Warehouse logo on it.  There were two 160's with a metal Sportsman's medallion on them.  I'd have bought half a dozen if they would have had them.  Funny thing was as I was loading them in my truck both medallions fell off :chuckle:  Guess the Wholesale folks never thought to check if they would pop off.  Sucks for them, killer deal for me!!!

I shot a whitetail in Canada and left the quarters hanging in camp.  One night they froze pretty good.  So I put them in the Yeti and packed it to the brim with snow.  Two days later I checked on it and none of the snow had melted.  Five days later I went through the game check point at the border and had to chisel the quarters out of the snow.  Eighteen hours later with the cooler in my Explorer with the heater blasting there was still no snow melted!  The second cooler was left outside the Canadian camp with soda in it.  Temps were at -18 degrees for almost 10 straight days and not a single soda froze.

If you can afford them, or get a screaming deal like I did, I doubt you will be disappointed!  As with any cooler they won't do you much good if folks are constantly opening the lid.

One of mine, after a few years of use, became twisted somehow and will no longer keep a seal. I'm betting it was my fault for storing it on end with the lid open.  I mentioned it to the Yeti folks at one of the shows.  They said if I paid for freight they would replace it for nothing but the freight charges.  I doubt Igloo is going to do that for me on any of my half dozen marine coolers that no longer fit together right!

I have several Yeti coolers. I packed in 16 miles into Hells Canyon. I use 2- 40Quart Yeti coolers on my mules . They fit perfectly in the panniers. I pre made all of the meals for 5 guys for 2 weeks of hunting. Froze them. I placed dry ice in the bottom of the coolers and covered it with a thin piece of rigid foam. We ate out of 1 cooler for the first week. We cracked it open every morning to get a dinner out. The remainder of the food stayed frozen solid the entire time. The dry ice was gone after a few days. The second cooler never thawed. It never got cooler than 79 DeG. at night and was well over 90 during the day. They are worth the money even if they were to cost more. We packed home 2 mule deer from new mexico this year with no ice. 35 hour drive. I had to wait a few day to let the meat thaw out to butcher it. You can not go wrong.

I picked up a 125qt for x-mas but have not used it really....one thing to consider is that even empty they are HEAVY  :yike:  I brought 75lbs of pepperoni home from the butcher in it and could hardly carry it  :bdid:

125 qt stays on boat
25 qt is just perfect for drinks for out while scouting
Thinking of getting a 45 at

Best coolers I've ever had

No changing hinges. No latches breaking. No lids caving in. Kept stuff cold for week. Only added one bag of ice during that week. Sure they're expensive. But I don't end up cussing about the yeti.

Nuff said

Anybody remember the brand of cooler that is similar to the Yeti?  :dunno:

I remember a guy getting on this website a couple years ago, becoming a site sponsor, and advertising his coolers.  They were made down in Texas or somewhere, and they had more insulation than Yeti.  If I remember right, he had a drawing for a cooler where somebody won the cooler.

They looked really good.  I think he was trying to find dealers in WA........and I think there were a couple in Portland.   ???

I think im gonna get one too, I shot my mule deer opening morning last year and boned it and kept it in a regular cooler for a week and it worked but would have rather had a yeti! Put a block of ice in there and its like a freezer!

This is the company I was thinking about:  Brute Outdoors (http://www.bruteoutdoors.com/brute-outdoors-150-qt/)

They  have some videos comparing their coolers to the competition here (http://www.bruteoutdoors.com/pages/VIDEOS.html).

The average guy doesn't need one in my opinion. I got the biggest cooler Walmart sold for a gift.
Left hunting  Oct. 2 with three blocks of ice in it and full of frozen food . Oct. 2- 23 I was in camp Naches and Twisp. Never bought more ice.
Got home emptied food out of cooler and forgot about it for another week. Went to clean it out and still had half blocks of ice in it.

They might be great. But the average guy is just not going to need them.

I'd rather spend the extra money some where else.

Bought a Tundra 125 and it is awesome. My buddy killed a elk over here this year and we had it processed and picked it up from the butcher. We put it in the Yeti and in a Coleman cooler. When we got back to my house we emptied the coleman into the freezer and just left the elk in the Yeti. 5 days later when he went to go home the elk in the Yeti was still frozen solid.

Check out these tests.

Really does not show the Yeti being all that great in comparison.

I'm a believer.  I've had many coolers over the years.  Without question, the Yeti keeps things cold significantly longer.  The only downside is the weight - they are heavy.  Well, that and the cost of course!

Yeti coolers are very durable but they don't hold ice any better then any other good cooler.  The cheapo coleman extremes actually hold it longer.  The Yeti's, engle's, pelicans and everyother high end cooler will last longer then the cheaper "exterme" coolers but they are proven to not hold ice longer.

I've seen some head to head comparisons with other coolers. Check Youtube or google it. Based upon the comparison tests there are other coolers for far less money that keep ice in the cooler longer than the Yeti brand.

Worth every penny.

IceTec is the other one. I have had many different brands over the last 40 years. The Yeti and Icetec have been the toughest coolers I have ever used. They do keep ice longer than any other cooler I own.

I like the fact you can get Icey-Tek in either cube or long boxes.  Cube boxes tend to keep ice better than long boxes, but I like being able to drop a big Chinook or an elk quarter in my Yeti whole.  Nice that a guy can have the option in the Icey-Tek.

I am a person who looks for the "More bang for the buck" and I have three coleman extreams.  They have worked fine for elk meat from Arizona to Washington.

I've got a Yeti and I love it. The only downside, as mentioned before is that they are heavy! They also have heavy duty rubber stops on the bottom that make scooting them around the bed of a truck or boat tough; but nice at the same time because you don't have to strap them down. They wont slide around. I won't ever go back to another cooler. They are bullet proof and do what a cooler is supposed to, keep stuff colder longer, no matter how warm it is. I even put mine in the front of my boat and stand on it to fish, they're super skookum. Worth every penny in my opinion.  :twocents:

I'm not one to shy away from buying quality goods. I've tried to talk myself into a Yeti, but can't do it. I can replace a LOT of hinges or latches on my Colemans for what a yeti costs.

I'm honestly surprised that the Igloo and Coleman coolers did so poorly, makes me wonder what conditions they were in. I've never had a Yeti but I've had the Coleman Xtreme and Igloo Marine coolers and both were really pretty impressive. The Coleman would keep ice easily for 5 days in 70 degree temps if you kept it out of the sun and my bigger Igloo will keep ice for 7+ days under similar conditions and over 10 with dry ice.

I was just in the Yakima Costco today and they had a slug of the Pelican brand coolers.  I was really surprised how thick the walls were and the difference in the outside of the cooler versus its inside capacity.  They are massively strong, sturdy and heavy.  I was thinking they were $199 and $159.  They advertised that they would keep ice 10 days.

I saw those yesterday at a costco, not in Washington. They had a #300 model that has far less capacity than the Igloo brand one they sell for $90. I think the igloo is 165 qts and the Pelican was like 95. Not sure why the Igloo isn't good enough  :dunno:

I've had a Coleman last for 5+ years and it still works like the day I bought it. Not sure why I need to spend $300+ on a cooler. Yes it looks sturdy, but dang, are you guys using these for target practice or something?

I think it's like having a diesel truck to tow your trailer over the pass.  Is it necessary? NO!  But once you experience it...it's hard to go back.

I've had the same Igloo Marine cooler for about 20 years.  Replaced the hinges twice and the handles once.  It's done everything I've wanted it to do.  Would I go back after owning a Yeti?  Not a chance in heck!!!  Would I switch to a Pelican?  Maybe :dunno:  In 40 years when my Yeti wears out :chuckle:

My Coleman lids were damaged from sitting on them  :chuckle: in the boat etc and I had a boat tank vent fuel on a hot day on my bigger one. I couldn't get the smell of gas out of it afterwards and ended up pitching it :( but so far my Igloo coolers are holding up well to being sat on etc.

We had two boat coolers on a trip in Florida - one Xtreme cooler - water by 1:00pm.  The other was a Yeti- was still great with almost no ice melt- I know which one I am buying for the beer cooler!!!   I do not like warm beer... :yike:

I can convince myself to shell out good money for quality once I am convinced of it. Another problem I have with these "extreme" coolers is their outside volume compared to internal capacity. That 95 qtPelican cooler at Costco takes up about as much room in the back of a pickup truck as does a 165qt Igloo. If you're going on an elk hunt, how many of these things will you bring?

There is not a whole lot of size difference between my 128Q Igloo marine and my 125 Yeti.  Outside dimensions are within 1/2 inch I think.  Although the Yeti weighs about three times more dry.  And the handles on the Igloo are not flush.  The 160 Yeti is 5" longer and about 1" taller than the 125/128 models.

Hard to compare the 150 Pelican as it is not a long box cooler.  I tend to stay away from treasure chest coolers when hunting as I don't always bone out my quarters.  They are usually better at keeping food and beverages cold, but there is no way you will fit two elk quarters in one.

I have the 95 qrt Pelican and love it.  I particularly like that it is american made and that all the parts, like handles and hinges can be replaced easily.   Just my two cents!
