I'm looking to make a deer feeder. I'm also not looking for people to debate baiting and not, thanks.
I wanted a few ideas. I have access to steel drums, or rain barrels. couple issues I've thought about:
1. There are a lot of bears in the area and although I don't mind them eating what i'll have out there I'm more concerned about them knocking it over. (My plan was to set it up on a tripod)
2. squirrels! How should I set up the feeding. Holes in the bottom and let gravity do the work? or should I buy the electric feeder that throws it out and buy a rodent guard? Let me know what you think or if you've built one, what your experience was.
And yes I know, I won't be shooting a bear that comes in to eat.

12" corrugated pipe 5 feet long with a few small holes in the bottom right at ground level and a lid, camo it up(branches,paint) secure it to a tree. will hold about 200 pounds of feed.

You going to put this close to your house on private ground or out in the woods somewhere and won't be able to check it very often?

Check out 'Nudge Feeder' You can make one. I bought one made by Wild Game. Works great.

Its going to be on my brother property. I'll be able to check and refill every other week or so. but yes, private property.
Did you see good results with the nudge feeder? That's a pretty neat idea.

I bought a automatic corn feeder at cabelas. It's the 225lb style corn trower. I have it set up to go off at 2:30 every day for 7 seconds. Full container lasts me about 4 months. I bought the hanging kind. No issues yet and it's plastic so chipmunks would just fall off. They just probably eat left overs that chuckers or deer don't finish. No bear issues either so far. I had to tie it to the tree tho that is cause wind pushed it around and I was feeding more then I wanted. Also a good scouting camera will tell u changes to be made if any.

Id mount a pully up high and hang it with a small cable or a good rope! I would not use a tripod in area with bears they will knock it over and destroy it! I had the same idea and put mine against a big tree and used a ratcheting tie down to the tree to keep them from knocking it over. Short story later they climbed on top of it and crushed it :chuckle:

Definitely don't use a tripod, bears will knock it over really quick. I've made a couple PVC gravit feeders and a couple of hanging drum feeders. I'm still trying to figure out how to cone the bottom of my drum feeders as I used bung tops, so there is no easy access to the inside. Maybe spray foam and smooth it out with a stick from the hole in the bottom???

I pull mine up empty and then I use a ladder to fill it up. Way easier then trying to pull it up full with a wheeler. I made that mistake just once. Lol
Cabelas has cheap feeders that work. They also sell everything separately if u just want the motor for example. Easy to install also.
I would use sheet metal for your cone bolt it on and caulk the edges.
